Sometimes you take time out to look up a new word in the dictionary, but doing that too many times slows down

4、 your reading. In fact, you can often figure out(推测) meaning for new words or expressions without using the dictionary. Using,Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),context clues(根据上下文提供的线索) in word recognition means figuring out the meaning of a word based on clues in the surrounding conte

5、xt. These clues could be found in the sentence with the word, in the sentence before, or in the sentences following the word. Most authors realize that some readers have problems with difficult words and deliberately put in clues that,Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),will enable the r

6、eader not only to recognize the words but also to get the meaning of the words. Authors also write in such a way as to prevent misreading due to personal interpretation. A word could have a different meaning to different people with differing backgrounds of knowledge and experience. The author will

Following are some common kinds of clues with examples a

8、nd an explanation of each. Context Clue 1: Definition(定义) Sometimes a writer knows that a word is,Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),unfamiliar or strange to many readers. To make the word easier to understand, the writer may include a definition of the word in a sentence. This context

9、clue is the easiest one to spot(认出). Look at the following examples: a. All other birthdays are called sing il (born day). 10、 the water. c. Jane is indecisive, that is, she cant make up her mind. Context Clue 2: Restatement(再述),Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),More often, you may find a restatement, which tells you almost as much as a definition. Look at these examples: a. He had a wan look. He was so pale

Once I set up a goal, I wont give it up easily. Context Clue 3: General Knowledge(常识) More often than not, the meaning of many

12、words can be readily(容易地) guessed if you use your own experience or general knowledge of the,Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),subject. Look at the following examples: a. The door was so low that I hit my head on the lintel . b. Mark got on the motorbike, I sat behind him on the pillio

Therefore, we are setting up a special remedial arithmetic course,” Context Clue 4: Related (相关的)information Some

14、times you can make an intelligent guess of the meaning of some new words or expressions,Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),if you put together related information from the surrounding text. Just look at the following examples: a. “ She went to school for 12 years and she cant write a se

15、ntence?”Timken said. “They made an illiterate out of my daughter!” b. Timken was now angry Once again he flew,Unit 8 Using Context Clues for Word Meanings(I),into a rage. c. Just before the exam, Carls hands shook and sweated so much that he could not hold a pen. His heart beat fast and his stomach

When you come across(遇到) a new word or expression in a comprehension passage, you are well advised to notice how the word or expression is repeated later in the text. Take the piece “Learning to Read-in College ”.The expression remedial class is repeated three times in the text: - “We are happy to announce that we started a remedial reading class for college freshmen and strongly advise that your daughter Laura participate in it.
