Bunyan captures the speech of ordinary people as accurately as he depicts their behavior and appearance and as firmly as he realizes their inner emot

Bunyans allegory stands out above his predecessors(前辈) because of his simple and effective, if somewha

3、t nave, prose(散文体) style, steeped in (充满)Biblical texts and cadences(节奏,韵律). He confesses(忏悔) his own navet(天真,轻信) in the verse(诗节,韵文) prologue(序幕,开场白) to the book:,. . . I did not think To shew to all the World my Pen and Ink In such a mode; I only thought to make I knew not what: nor did I underta

4、ke Thereby to please my Neighbour; no not I; I did it mine own self to gratifie.,Context in Christendom (基督教徒,基督教世界),The explicit(详尽的,清楚地) Protestant(基督教徒,新教徒) theology (神学)of The Pilgrims Progress made it much more popular than its predecessors. Bunyans gifts and plain style breathe life into the a

5、bstractions(抽象概念) of the anthropomorphized(人性化) temptations(诱惑) and abstractions that Christian encounters and with whom he converses(认识,谈话) on his course to Heaven. Samuel Johnson said that this is the great merit of,the book, that the most cultivated man cannot find anything to praise more highly,

6、 and the child knows nothing more amusing. Three years after its publication (1681), it was reprinted in colonial America, and was widely read in the Puritan colonies. Because of its explicit(详尽的) English Protestant theology (神学)The Pilgrims Progress shares the popular English antipathy(厌恶,反感) towar

7、d the Roman,Catholic(天主教的) Church. It was published over the years (1678-1681) and ten years before the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The Puritans may have read the story for religion, but all classes of men have read it because they,found in it a true personal experience told with strength, interest, humor-in a word, with all the qualities that such a story should possess. Young people have rea

12、d it, first, for its intrinsic (本质的,内在的) worth, because the dramatic interest of the story lured them on to the end; and second, because,it was their introduction to true allegory. It was the only book having any story interest in the great majority of English and American home for a full century.,W

13、hat is the significance of The Pilgrims Progress?,The most significant thing is that the satires in the book are centered upon the ruling class. Especially well-known are the descriptions of Vanity Fair and of the experience of Christian and Faithful in it, for here Bunyan not only gives us a symbol

14、ic picture of London at the time of Restoration(王朝复辟) but of feudal(封建制度的)-bourgeois( 资产阶级),society in general where all things are bought and sold (including honors, titles, kingdoms, lusts淫欲;贪欲, pleasures and lives) and where cheating and roguery (流氓行为,诈骗), murders and adultery (通奸,不贞) are normal. And everywhere in the book, behind the allegorical figures were real persons of 17th-century English,society, such as Worldly Wiseman, Talkative, By-Ends, Money-love and others.
