、ExFHPB-4 Determination of Extraneous Material in Whole Dates Government of Canada Gouvernement du Canada HPB MethodExFHPB-4February 2006HEALTH PRODUCTS AND FOOD BRANCHOTTAWADETERMINATION OF EXTRANEOUS MATERIAL IN WHOLE DATESEvaluation Division, Bureau of Microbial Hazards, Food Directorate, Postal L

、ocator: 2204A1Health Canada, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0L21.APPLICATIONThis method is applicable to the sampling and examination of whole dates, that will be subject to no further cleaningor sorting prior to use or sale, for insect infestation, mites, mould, hairs, fibres, sand, soil and other extraneousm

、aterial and in pitted dates for pits and pieces of pit, to determine compliance with Sections 4, 5 and 7 of the Foodand Drugs Act. This method replaces ExFHPB-4, dated April 1996.2.DEFITINITION OF TERMSA lot is defined as that amount (volume, weight, etc.) of the food which is produced, stored and/o

、r shipped underconditions as nearly uniform as possible, preferably designated by a common container code or marking, and, inany event, consisting of not more than one variety, grade or type of product from a single identifiable source.3.COLLECTION OF SAMPLES3.1Scrutinize the entire lot for live inf

、estation. If live infestation is found, do not sample until after fumigationor other effective treatment.3.2Obtain eight sample units selected at random from the lot of at least 50 dates each (650 g) usingappropriate sampling equipment and containers. Eight sample units constitute a sample.3.3Each s

、ample unit must be kept separate and labelled 1, 2, 3, etc. Complete information respecting the lotsize, weight of individual containers, country of origin, exporter, importer and product and lot identificationshould be recorded and should accompany the sample.4.MATERIALS AND SPECIAL EQUIPMENT1)Shar

、ut in accordance with the following instructions.5.1Analytical Units5.1.1From each of eight sample units, take 50 dates in a random fashion. Each 50 dates constitutes ananalytical unit.5.2Examination for Defective Dates5.2.1Examine each date in an analytical unit as follows:(a)For unpitted dates, cu

、t date in half lengthwise with a sharp knife and remove pit.(b)For pitted and originally unpitted dates, examine the outer surface and pit cavity of each dateusing an illuminator and a magnifying lens (3-5x) for insects, mites and their damage, mould, dirtand worthlessness as outlined in 5.4. Use a

、stereoscopic microscope (10-70x) only to confirmquestionable areas. Confirm mould filaments by transferring questionable particles to a glassslide and observing with a compound microscope (100x).5.2.2Repeat examination of the seven remaining analytical units.5.3Examination for Pits and Pieces of Pit

、 (for pitted dates only)5.3.1Examine all 400 dates for pits and pieces of pit $ 2 mm (longest dimension).5.4Classification of Defective Dates5.4.1Classify each date into one of the following categories. If a date shows more than one defect, classify onlyas a multiple defective.(a)Insect Damaged - da

、tes containing insects or their parts, insect tunnels, excreta, eggs, orwebbing. Report the kind and approximate number of insects and parts if present.(b)Mite Infested - dates containing sufficient numbers of mites to be seen by examination of thesample as a whole, i.e. > 20 mites per date. Mite

、 contamination is often associated with a dusty, sugary or encrusted appearance containing mite bodies on the date.(c)Mouldy or Sour - dates with mouldy or rotten areas $ 5 mm in diameter either singly or inaggregate. Sour dates have a distinct odour characteristic of fermentation.(d)Dirty - dates sh
