、Chris Wolf,Gartner for Technical Professionals Client Virtualization: Tales From the Trenches,Will Desktop Virtualization Reduce Capex?,LOL,Project Background,Gartner conducted site visits/interviews with 19 end user organizations between March-April 2012 The goal was to understand how client virtua

、lization technologies were being used to transform the traditional desktop All participants acted independently but arrived at remarkably similar conclusions regarding technology choices, architecture, and changes to the organizational structure and governance,Agenda,Planning and strategy Architectu

、 instant-on. You cant do that with a PC.,We want to get out of the device management business. Let people use whatever they like. Just use their edge device and our security and get the same look and feel as if theyre in the office.,It was going to happen no matter what because of patient safety tak

、es too long to get into a PC. Put kids at risk. Had to be fast and ubiquitous childrens lives were at stake.,Building the Business Case,Based on benefits anywhere desktop, speed, and security Piggybacked with Windows 7 migrations and PC refresh Part of new infrastructure build-outs TCO reduction is

、a long term benefit but often not front and center with the business case (Gartner estimates a 2% to 13% TCO reduction) Help desk call volume drops and staff reductions are achievable,We laid out the challenge to vendors you wont have high adoption without cost parity. Vendors argued youd get labor

、savings, but we said That doesnt count. Thats ours! If you want massive adoption, its got to be less expensive.,And Then Theres CAPEX,Whats it going to take to get you into this VDI today?,Invoice Base: $800,000 Road Side Assistance Consulting: $100,000 Rust Proofing Personalization:$100,000 Schedul

、ed Maintenance Management Software: $60,000 Turbo I/O Acceleration:$120,000 Taxes and Fees Software Licensing: $100,000 Total:$1.28M,Keeping CAPEX in Check,Average SHVD CAPEX = 1.4-1.7x the cost of a physical desktop (1-1.4x is achievable) Centralize desktop images limit the number of dedicated virt

、ual desktop images Repurpose physical desktops as thin clients Evaluate the feasibility of System on a Chip (SoC)/ARM-based thin clients ($200 retail) Beware hidden costs (personalization, print roaming, network and storage upgrades),General Planning Considerations,There is no silver bullet: Virtual

、 desktops, physical desktops, Web, mobile, and server-based computing all have their place Start slowly: 200 to 500 users in initial pilot 1 to 2,000 users in year 2 5,000+ in year 3 Get users involved in determining requirements Group users into profiles to align with the best platform for each use

、 case Get all IT teams involved in the architecture,Architecture and Design,Architecture Considerations,Platforms Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View remain the top two choices Leverage pooled/non-persistent desktops as much as possible Explore application layering technologies (Unidesk is the most po

、pular among clients) Spend considerable time on storage architecture planning Take the time to assess how applications are being used (a basic inventory isnt enough) Standardize as much as possible Dont leverage existing data center infrastructure for virtual desktops,Additional Considerations,Bring

、 in thin/zero clients as your virtual desktop environment scales Carefully assess high availability and disaster recovery capabilities Use load balancers to ensure session persistence between login events and between sites User acceptance is influenced by the closeness to a native Windows experience

、,Management and Operations,We have stupid applications and stupid users. Stupid applications save things in directories in places they shouldnt (program files) like Lotus Notes. View has a way to take the Docs & Settings and move to another drivebut you cant do this for program files. So customizati

、on gets blown away. Stupid users save things in non personal spaces like desktop or docs (Root of C: drive as an example). If users install their own applications or use odd data locations, they lose all of it when the pool gets updated.,General Considerations,Just because an application can be virt

、ualized, that doesnt mean it should be virtualized Invest in performance management tools Pay close attention to change management practices,Last year during a storm we had no way of determining the cause of a users problem. As it turned out, poor performance was caused by the users kids streaming v

、ideo on a snow day. Meanwhile we were running around our data center thinking the problem was on our end.,Storage,Storage = 40 to 60% of entire SHVD budget Clients commonly state that storage costs are unsustainable from a scale perspective Storage admins have to think differently about storage for

、virtual desktops,Every Friday we have a standing meeting with our storage and virtualization teams to discuss our storage latency problems. We call this meeting Storage Wars. We state there is a problem each week and they say no there isnt. We do that every week. This has been going on for three mon

、ths.,Common Storage Problems,Capacity Performance (boot storms and write storms),Security and Compliance,Weve become more secure by being more open. Theres no data or application on a device, so we dont have to worry about it anymore.,I see the importance of the desktop overall disappearing. I want

、to provide secure access to apps and data regardless of the device youre on.,Security Trends,Move security to the data center Greater user acceptance can be achieved by replacing VPN client with native SHVD security gateway Leverage SHVD-aware security solutions Create a network zone (e.g., limited

、access zone) for BYOD SHVD users to guarantee them a good QoS,Another important component thats driven by consumerization is network access control. As a technology thats something were in the process of implementing. Its absolutely necessary for us to tolerate the consumerization trend and maintain

、 the security that we need internally.,Organization and Governance,Teamwork Is Essential,Close coordination between the data center and desktop teams is necessary Storage, network, and security and network teams must be involved as well,Storage is the worst silo in the IT organization. Theyre good p

、eople, but getting them to change is hard. You have to change language, interactions, and people have to change in what they are delivering to the customer.,General Governance Trends,Build a dedicated virtual desktop team Collapse support staff silos from three to two support levels Dont assume that

、 BYOD entails no IT support Require virtual desktop and virtual application support in vendor RFPs Good training is key to user acceptance. If the virtual desktop experience isnt intuitive, you failed,Service calls for resets have fallen by 46%. That has minimized the service desk calls. For whatever reason, our overall call volume to the desktop techs has fallen 9%.,Recommendations,Plan! Plan! Plan! Transitioning to client virtualization has a massive impact on: IT processes Application delivery architecture Management tools Security: Data, end
