1、Gullivers Travels,1726 The plot of the book comprises the extraordinary adventures of Doctor Lemuel Gulliver. Four parts : Lilliput, Brobdingnag , Laputa, Houyhnhnm,Gullivers Travels was a controversial work when it was first published in 1726. In fact, it was not until almost ten years after its fi

2、rst printing that the book appeared with the entire text that Swift had originally intended it to have. Ever since, editors have excised many of the passages, particularly the more caustic ones dealing with bodily functions. Even without those passages, however, Gullivers Travels serves as a biting

3、satire, and Swift ensures that it is both humorous and critical, constantly attacking British and European society through its descriptions of imaginary countries.,Lilliput,What is the proportion between Gulliver and Lilliputians? Why was the king regarded as a king? He is taller by almost the bread

4、th of my nail, than any of his court; which alone is enough to strike an awe into the beholders. The emperor diverts Gulliver with some shows, one of them is described as exceeding all nations both for dexterity and magnificence, What is it?,The emperor had a mind one day to entertain me with severa

5、l of the country shows, wherein they exceed all nations I have known, both for dexterity and magnificence. I was diverted with none so much as that of the rope-dancers, performed upon a slender white thread, extended about two feet, and twelve inches from the ground. This diversion is only practised

6、 by those persons who are candidates for great employments, and high favour at court. They are trained in this art from their youth, and are not always of noble birth, or liberal education. When a great office is vacant, either by death or disgrace (which often happens,) five or six of those candida

For, said he, as flourishing a condition as we may appear to be in to foreigners, we labour under two mighty evils: a violent faction at home, and the danger of an invasion, by a most potent enemy, from abroad.,As to the first, you are to understand, tha

10、t for about seventy moons past there have been two struggling parties in this empire, under the names of TRAMECKSAN and SLAMECKSAN, from the high and low heels of their shoes, by which they distinguish themselves. It is alleged, indeed, that the high heels are most agreeable to our ancient constitut

11、ion; but, however this be, his majesty has determined to make use only of low heels in the administration of the government, and all offices in the gift of the crown, as you cannot but observe; and particularly that his majestys imperial heels are lower at least by a DRURR than any of his court ,The
