12、hite House has issued an updated version of its strategy for dealing with a possible influenza pandemic. The plan warns cities, states and businesses that they should prepare now to keep operating on their own and not count on federal help, and says that a flu pandemic could make up to 40% of the wo
13、rkforce too sick to work for two weeks at a time and that the infection could remain active in a community for up to two months. In the worst case, the report says, a pandemic could cause as many as two million deaths in the United States. Influenza pandemics tend to break out when a never-before-se
14、en strain of the virus starts passing from person to person. Scientists are currently worried that the Asian bird flu migh mutate into that kind of virus.,Section C,Item 1 The number of people infected with HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, is still rising and has passed 14 million worldwide for
15、 the first time. The United Nations said there been five million new infections this year and warned that AIDS was outstrippling global and national efforts to contain it. T T F F T,Item 3 The Food and Drug Administration is investigating whether more than one food company is responsible for an outbreak of E.coli bacteria. Officials have linked bad spinach from Natural Selection Foods as one source of the E.c
19、oli. The company says the products are sold under the brand name Earth Bound Farm. Doctor David Atchison with the FDA says Natural Selection Foods has voluntarily recalled the spinach. The FDA advises shoppers to get rid of any fresh spinach in bags or other containers. At least one person has died.
20、 Dozens of others have gotten sick in at least 19 states.,Section B,1. The problem of obesity is spreading into many different aspects of Americans lives. Now researchers have confirmed that some children are so fat that they cant fin into car safety seats designed for kids. 2. Two more Indian state
21、s have banned the sale of soft drinks produced by US giants Coca-cola and Pepsi-cola after a test by an environmental group showd high pesticide levels. This brings the total number of states to six where there is a partial or full ban of the soft drinks. 3. An Asian expert says disease and natural

The Unites Nations says opium cultivation in Afghanistan has declined for the first time since 2001 as tens of thousands of farmers have given up opium poppies for legal crops. 5. 24、ussing possible salvage efforts with Sun Cruisers, the Singapore owner of a large liner, that sunk off Malaysia last week, a news report said yesterday. Sun Cruisers had received some advice from Malaysia on the matter. The Business Times newspaper quoted the companys spokeswoman Judy Choo as saying
25、. Judy and other Sun Cruisers officials could not immediately be reached for further comment as they were away in Indonesia. The Sun Vista went down in international waters. The nearby Malaysia may have the right to order the wrecks removal, the newspaper said. Salvage experts said the wreck of the
26、Sun Vista, which sank 65 meters of water, poses no threats to ships passing over it, but Malaysia may still want it removed. A,Item 23 A Pakistanian lawyer said the resumption of the trial of 8 foreign aid workers accused of preaching Christianity in Afghanistan has been put off until Sunday. He had
27、 met earlier Saturday with the aid workers, 2 Americans, 2 Australians, and 4 Germans. They insisted they were in Afghanistan to help the poor, not to convert them. The penalty for those captured aid workers could range from expulsion to a jail term or death sentence. A C,Item 24 On the 24th anniver
28、sary of the first official report on AIDS, the head of the United Nations AIDS program warns the deadly disease may only be at its early stages in many parts of the world. Doctor Piot said the disease has already reached staggering proportions since first being indentified in 1981. 58 million people
29、 worldwide have contracted the HIV virus which causes AIDS while 22 million have died from the related illness. The UN estimates the worlds HIV-positive population at 36 million including 25 million in Sub-Sahara Africa. International officials warn the disease will have disastrous political, social
30、 and economic consequences in many developing countries. D B,Item 25 The World Bank is urging governments and the private sector, especially in developing countries, to improve the delivery of basic serices to the poor. A World Bank report entitled, Making Services Work for Poor People, shows what m
31、any people, especially in the development countries, experience on a daily basis: they are commonly and sometimes dramatically shortchanged when it comes to services. The report finds that almost 70 percent of babies in sub-Sahara Africas richest families are born in a health facility, while less th
32、an 20 percent of babies in Africas families are born in hopitals. It says nearly two of every 10 people in developing countries were without access to safe drinking water in 2000, five out of 10 lived without adequate sanitation and nine out of 10 lived without their wastewater treated in any way. 33、 B,Item 26 Israel has closed borders around the Palestinian town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Hundreds of troops supported by tanks, earthmovers and attack helicopters entered the town early Monday. Townspeople are fleeing. Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen fired at each other. There w
34、ere no reports of injuries, however. United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on Israel to cancel its plan to destroy homes in Rafah. He said such destruction would viiolate international laws. Israel says the action is necessary to stop illegal arms transports and attacks by militans.
35、 Also, the Palestinian prime minister has urged the United States to take steps to stop the Israeli operation. He met with American National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in Berlin, Germany. D A,Item 27 A bomb explosion in Baghdad has killed the head of the United States-appointed Iraqi governin
36、g council. Izzadine Saleem died just outside the headquarters of the American-led coalition. The attack also killed eight other people including the bomber. The bomb was in a car that exploded next to a group of military vehicles. American officials in Iraq say the incident was very similar to attac
37、ks ordered by Jordanian extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The Iraqi governing council has named Chazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer as its new leader. Also in Iraq, kidnappers reportedly have freed two Russian civilian workers in Baghdad. They were seized May tenth. C C,Item 28 European Union foreign ministers
38、 have condemned the bad treatment of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq. The delegates said the actions violate international law, but the foerign ministers also say they welcome plans by the United States to take action against those responsible for the violations. The ministers also denounce
39、d the killing in Baghdad of the head of the United States-appointed Iraqi governing council. The EU officials are meeting in Brussels to discuss proposals for a new constitution. They hope to complete their work before a meeting of EU leaders on June 7th. D D,Item 29 Sonia Gandhi is to be sworn in a
40、s the new prime minister of India on May 19th. Her Congress Partyw on natinoal elections last week. The ousted Hindu nationalist coalition says it will boycott the ceremony to protest the fact that Mrs. Gandhi was not born in India. She is of Italian birth. However, the man Mrs. Gandhi will replace,
41、 prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee says he will attend the event. Also, a Congress party spokesman say Mrs. Gandhi will meet with Indian President Abdul Kalam Tuesday to discuss the formation of a new government. C A,Item 30 Reports say a Chechen rebel leader has claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing in Grozni last week. The explosion killed the president of the Russian republic, Akmad Kadyrov and five other people. A statement signed by rebel leader Shamil Basayeve appeared on an Internet website. Rebels in the Caucus area of Russia operate the website. The statement has not been
