2、ned to be understood and enjoyed both from the pace of a pedestrian on Main Street or through the perspective of a visitors windshield as they arrive in Park City. The Kimball Art Center is conceivedasacomfortable building of its place and timethat also celebrates thechallenge of the new. It is a ho
3、me tothepossibilities of makingandideasas it serves its mission of providing quality arts education, exhibition, and events.The biggest challenge in comingupwith our scheme was understanding how to deal withthecomplex-ity of connecting all theedges of the Art Centers site, which is shaped, in sectio
4、n, likea “warped potato chip!” The solution is a 3dimensional Mbius strip, of sorts, which defines the movement from the side- walk through the interior of theIt embraces flexibility and flow, with a careful choreographed logic of movement, both vertical and hori- zontal, across the topography of it
5、s focal point urban site. Our design concept for the Kimball Art Center is to create a new dynamic town square of Park Citys Main Streeta social, intellectual and experien- tial hub of activity.KAC New Meets Old.The respectfully restored facades of the original 1929 Eloy Motor Services/Kimball Garag
6、e will serve as the historic foil to the new education and administration needs of the Center without losing its third place heart, the communitycoffee shop. The sloped floor 165 seat lecture/screening room is carved out of the lower northwest corner of the new Main Street floor level. The artifact
7、of the old becomes the foundation for the new translucent glass scrimmed 6000 sf rooftop garden terracean ephemeral halo over theoriginalrusticwalls of KAC, created for theenjoyment andviewing of art and film while embraced by surrounding mountains and sky.Thoughtfully mining the possibilities of tr
8、ansparency, porosity and accessibility, materiality and craft, thescheme optimizes exhibition through a grand flexible lobby as a make space, entered from both Main Street and Heber Avenue, where the diverse programming of the Kimball Art Center is conceived to be inextricably linked to Park Citys u
9、rban context and public realm.The expansive sweep of the primary gallery spaces, with 17 ceilings, is contiguouswiththe public rooftopterrace. These column free art spaces gainmuch of theirenergyandserenity from their dynamic plan forms around the glazed and UV protected sky well. This dramatic elem
10、ent, open to the sky, gives continuity to the Centers three levels, as do a series of narrow random width slot apertures which punctuate views out to the city. Together, they enliven the mixer ante chamber at the entry to the more discrete gallery spaces.stage 2design methodology, team collaboration

12、ball Art Centers core mission with a balance of simplicity, efficiency, and material presence. Under the design leadership of Will Bruder, our team used traditional drawing and physical modeling techniquesas well as digital3-dimensional modeling tools. Working with Park City based architect, Bruce T
13、aylor, and structural engi- neer, Mark Rudow, we have evolved a scheme of logic and affordability.Upon our selection asyour architects, we will work withyour Board, Staff, and Building Committee, aswell as community stakeholders and government approval agencies, to challenge, test and refine our con
14、ceptual work of the competition. We have formed a potential team of both local and regional consul- tants to collaborate with our firm. Once selected, we will work with you to solidify our team. Will Bruder is licensed in the State of Utah and will serve as both design architect and architect of rec
15、ord.We view our competition entry as the starting point for an exciting and meaningful journey for the newlyreinvented Kimball Art Center.KAC Architecture Inspired by People, Place and a Passion for the ArtsPark Citys historic downtown core is memorable for its authentic character, modesty of scale,
16、 andrich and comfortable pedestrian livability. Naturallyintegrated withinthetopography ofthecanyon that defines Park City, our design concept for the Kimball Art Center embraces these unique qualities. The transparency at the pedestrian level of Main Street, complemented by its physical, yet striki
17、ngly fine grained, faade is a nuancedassemblageof artful craftand sensuous delight that speaks tothe diversity and individualism of Park City. Inspired by the art and architecture of our time, our design concept for the Kimball Art Center represents a careful balance of functional pragmatism and inv
18、entive poetry. Offering a fresh complement to local context while joining the global dialogue of aesthetics and design excellence, the newly reinvented Kimball Art Center willbe both avalued communityarts centeras well asaland- mark arts destination.stage 2technical narrative structural engineering

20、 Kimball Art Center is to evolve a transformation strategy that opti-mizesthe ability tomove from old to new withefficiency, economy, andresilientidentity.From these perspectives, we recommend the following variations of your proposed three phase construction/move- in cycle.1 Begin construction in t
21、he early summer building cycle on the empty eastern portion of the site.2 Perform initial site preparation, demolition of exterior decks and eastern 14 of original building, whilerevising the exiting circulation. This early intervention into the original would allow for construction of the new eleva
22、tor core to proceed in timely and efficiently.3 Proceed with foundation work and erection of structural steel for the addition within the initial eightmonths of construction.4 Following the completion of the January Sundance events, close the original KAC for the demolition ofthe existing interior a
23、nd roof structure, excavate for the proposed lecture screening hall and lowered the basement floor to match the new Main Street floor level and allow for more appropriately scaled studio spaces.5 Proceed for a unified singular celebratory opening.Notwithstanding the merits of the above strategy, oth
24、er considerations may result in measureable long-term benefits. The tight urban site is inherentwithchallenging constructioncoordination issues and potential unknown costs. Our experience with such projects suggests that the sooner KAC is able to give uptheentire building site toconstruction, thegre
25、ater the potential is for loweringconstructioncosts. While this approach involves a temporary relocation, the cost savings of this approach could well pay for thecost of thistemporaryrelocation, aswell asminimizing multiple on site moves during construction. In the end, the ability to open and occup
26、y the newly transformed KAC in one coordinated and celebratory effort will have the most powerful impact of first impression and accomplishment.Within the sealed schedule envelope our team has provided, per your request, we have analyzed threedifferent proposal schedules in detail. Schedule 1 is bas
27、ed on full KAC occupancy during construction of phase 1 asyou have proposed in yourrequest. Schedule 2 is for the approach identified above, and schedule 3 is based on KAC moving out prior to the start of any construction.KAC An Authentically Sustainable Approach.Every aspect of our concept for the
28、transformation and expansion of the Kimball Art Center has been informedfrom the inside out andtheoutside in. As conceived, this building can attain LEED Platinum Certification and operate at the highest level of cost efficiency. From the careful reuse of materials and components of the original bui
29、lding tothe proper sorting andrecycling of constructionwaste, the project will beanexemplar of current sustainable building practices. The buildings envelope of glazed andinsulated walls will be developed tothe highest performance standards.Through the separation of KACs upper level galleries and ar
30、t storage spaces environmental conditioning systemfrom the facilitys other 75% of public andback-of-house functions, thehighcost of meetingandmaintaining ideal museum display certification standards of temperature and humidity control can be minimized. Utilizing this design approach, administration,
31、 educational and back-of-house spaces can enjoy natural ventilation and other environmental conditioning strategies common to and efficient with the climate of Park City Utah.On-site energygeneration and resource conservation are harnessed via asignificant rooftop photovoltaic col-lectorarray, a hig
32、h-performance sculptural display of nine state-of-the-art Philip Staark designed helical wind turbines, and a living green roof terrace atop the original building. Together, these elements will make KAC a land- mark of sustainability for both the region and the art community at-large.Beyond serving
33、asthecenter of Park Citys cultural excellence, Kimball Art Centers LEED Platinum status canonly raise the communitys active focus on environmental awareness and responsibility.KAC Building Program Compared to the Actual Areas of the Design Concept.This tabular analysis accurately reflects how the design efficient
