B As I got into the plane flying to Boston last week and saw what row I was sitting in, I could see a mother sitting in the first seat and in the middle was a little girl, 2 or 3 Im guessing, put into a car seat. As I looked at the mother, I could sense her nervousnesslikely worried as to who would be sitting next to her daughter and what the reaction would be. Once I sat down, I could see why she was worried. The small child was handicapped and struggled to perform many of the functions the rest of us take for granted. Her eyes seemed to wonder, her arms would occasionally wave about, she was a beautiful little girl with a magical smile. And when I would look at her and smile, she would return the favor. After a while, she started grabbing my arm so as to hold it. Her mother would quickly ask her to stop and at first I acted like I dont notice. About the 4th time the little girl grabbed my arm with her small hand and the mother began to ask her to stop. I gave her a simple look of confidence and told her everything was OK, and that as a father of four little ones myself, it was nice to have someone the same age of my youngest, sitting next to me. The mother seemed relieved and for the rest of the 90-minute flight. I felt a little hand across my forearm, gratitude filled my heart as thoughts and reflections on my own life, health, and children flooded my mind.24. However, since April, the small island of just 2,600 residents(居民)has gained worldwide fame thanks to the magical return of a beach that was washed away over three decades ago. The chain of events began in 1984 when residents of Dooagh, one of the five settlements on the island, awoke to a surprising sight: their beautiful sandy beach had been washed away by strong Atlantic storms. There were only rocks and rock pools left. For 34 years, only small amounts of sand returned to the once unspoiled shores. the areas tourism industry slowly declined, and the handful of beachside hotels, pubs, and restaurants gradually closed as well. Then, around Easter in 2017, something magical happenedan unusual ten-day tide blanketed the barren 300-meter long rock beach with hundreds of tons of soft golden sand. Scientists suspect that the sand had been gathering offshore for months and was transported to the beach by the high winds and powerful waves. The locals are delighted to have their beach back, especially as it is attracting thousands of visitors wishing to witness the power of nature, with their own eyes. However, Sean Molloy, manager of Achill Tourism, cautions against going into the cold waters just yet, saying, “Because of the sand coming in, we dont know how safe the beach is now because currents(水流)could be changed and itll take a little bit of time.” He instead recommends visitors enjoy the soft sand and leave the swimming to the dolphins that frequent the area. Interestingly, this is not the first time Dooagh Beach has pulled a disappearing and reappearing act. It disappeared in the 1890s, for over 30 years, before returning in 1927. However, the locals are optimistic that this time around, the beautiful sand is here to stay. 28. What has brought Achill Island worldwide attention recently?A. An unusual storm. B. What does the underlined word “barren” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Noisy. B. Soft. C. Bare D. Golden. 31. What should tourists avoid according to Sean Molloy?A. Spoiling the shores. B. Getting into the rock pools. C. Playing with dolphins. D. Swimming near the beaches. DIf you ask most people what water tastes like, theyll probably tell you that water has no taste and they may give you a funny look. But if you were a fruit fly, asking another fruit fly, that question might have a different answer. To a fruit fly, water has a taste. Scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water because this information may help in learning how other animals or even individual cells manage to use water in the right way. Water is vital to life, but too much or too little can be deadly to a living creature. So by understanding how the fruit fly tastes water, researchers may learn more about other living things.According to the new study, a protein called PPK28 makes it possible for a fly to taste water. Proteins build cells and tissues, fight disease and carry messages between cells. Its not surprising that a protein is responsible for the fruit flys ability to taste water. The PPK28 protein is part of a larger family of similar proteins. One of these related proteins is used by mammals (including humans) to taste salt. Scientists have not found a protein that enables humans to “taste” water. In the experiment, Cameron and his team compared normal fruit flies with fruit flies whose taste cells had been disabled. The fruit flies were given a special chemical that would glow(发光) when the fly used the PPK28 protein. Then the scientists led the flies to water. When the normal flies tasted the water, the PPK28 protein lit up showing that it was in use. The fruit fly in particular is so interesting that some scientists are hard at work creating a complete map of the fruit fly brain. This map will show all of a flys neurons and help scientists understand how the neurons work together.32. How do most people feel when asked the taste of water?A. Amused. B. Frightened.C. Disappointed. D.Ashamed.33. Why do scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water?A. To decrease the number of the fruit fly. B. To know more about other creatures.C. To manage to use water correctly. D. To describe the taste of water.34. What do we know about the PPk28 protein?A. It can make humans taste salt. B. The fruit fly cant live without it. C. It enables the fruit fly to taste water. D. The fruit fly uses it to avoid illnesses.35. What will the scientists continue to work at?A. Studying the fruit flys neuron systems.B. Telling more information about cells.C. Creating maps of human brains.D. Making the PPk28 protein.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Work Faster and SmarterAs the old saying goes “work smarter, not harder”.What does that really mean?
