Unit 14 CareersCareer values in general are when you start working in the “real world”, what are the qualities that are the most important to you personally in your career, and what longterm features of your career do you value.Values are the things that are the most important to us in our lives and careers. Our values are formed in a variety of ways through our life experiences, our feelings and our families. In the context of Career Planning, values generally refer to the things we value in a career. For example, some people value job security (安全), money, structure and a regular schedule.Others value flexibility (灵活性), excitement, independence and variety.Career values are things we feel very strongly about. For example, most of us will say that having enough money to live comfortably is important to us, but many are willing to work for less because what they value most is not money, its something else such as working for a specific (特定的) cause, helping people or having free time. Being aware of what we value in our lives is important because a career choice that is consistent with our core (核心) beliefs and values is more likely to be a lasting and positive choice.Section_Warmup_&_Lesson_1_Prereading对应学生用书P35,Everybodys good at something!Do this personality test and find the right job for you.1A friend is having problems writing a plot summary for a book report. Stocks were wooden structures that would hold a person immobile for long periods of time, usually by securing the persons head and hands in the holes cut between two boards that were mounted on a pole. The physical aspect of being held in stocks caused pain, and they were commonly placed in public areas so passersby could ridicule those who were being punished. It was common for people who were in stocks to be hit with mud, rotten foods and even animal excrement (粪便) that was thrown by the passersby. This could have led to the use of “laughing stock” in old English sayings.Another theory behind the phrase is a more literal interpretation (字面解释). The word “stock” can mean a block of wood that provides support. A stock also can be the butt end (根端) of a structure or tool, such as a gun. When a person or an action becomes the base of a joke, it can be said they are the butt of the joke, or the “laughing stock.”The term is often used in modern times. If an idea can be laughed at, the idea can be the “laughing stock”. This term is seen in print media and heard on radio and television, and it has found a way into most dictionaries and other reference books that list common expressions.Although the term might be derived from the public humiliation (羞辱) of actual criminals, the act of putting people in stocks is sometimes done in modern times for fun and public benefit. For example, at some fundraising events or carnivals, a volunteer or willing worker might be placed in stocks, and other people can pay for the special right of throwing water balloons, cream pies or other soft, wet things at the face of the person in the stocks. This is done to raise money and draw laughter, making the person in the stocks a true “laughing stock”语篇解读:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了“笑柄”这一词的来源及意义。8In old times, stocks were used _.Ato attract passersbyBto punish criminalsCin public ceremoniesDfor entertainment purposes解析:选B细节理解题。由第二段中的“one of the preferred methods of punishment for less serious crime was putting individuals in stocks”可知,从前颈手枷是用作刑具,用来惩罚罪犯的。9If we say a person is a “laughing stock”, he is _.Asilly BstrangeCguilty Dcareless解析:选A推理判断题。由第一段中的“The term laughing stock refers to a person, thing or situation that is ridiculed.”以及第三段中的“When a person . becomes the base of a joke . the laughing stock.”可知,“笑柄”指的是被人嘲笑的人或事,由此可知,如果一个人被称为“笑柄”,那他一定是做了可笑的事情。10What do we learn about the term “laughing stock” in Paragraph 4?AIt developed very fast.BIt refers to a funny idea.CIt is widely used and accepted.DIt has different meanings now.解析:选C推理判断题。由第四段中的“This term is seen in print media . most dictionaries and other reference books that list common expressions.”可知,在现代,“笑柄”这一词已被广泛使用,并且被列入字典和参考书中。11What is the aim of putting people in stocks in modern times?ATo humiliate them.BTo enrich peoples experiences.CTo explain what a laughing stock is.DTo collect money and bring pleasure.解析:选D细节理解题。由最后一段中的“for fun and public benefit”和“This is done to raise money and draw laughter”可知,这样做是为了募捐,并且给人们带来欢笑。.阅读七选五Three tips for customer satisfactionHaving bad customer service is bad for business. _1_.
