In the rainforest, he watched a bird flying through the trees. The beautiful sight left quite an impression on him. But weeks later, back home, Rhett Butler got the news that trees in the area he visited had been cut down. That experience led Rhett Butler to write a book about rainforests and threats to their existence(存在) . But he did not publish the book. Instead, in 1999, he created a website, using his research for the book. The site is M. His purpose was to inform the public of tropical rainforests. But the subject quickly developed. As a former businessman, he became a respected writer of science and environmental stories. The popularity of M attracted advertisers. Small ads on the site pay for its operations. M has grown and led to other sites, for example, , a site for children; WildM, which is about the island that Rhett Butler called his favorite place. To keep his website going, he travels around the world on several major trips each year. His working tools are a laptop computer, cameras and some diving equipment. He often calls on experts for information. For example, he interviewed Alison Jolly, a top expert on lemurs (狐猴). He interviewed Rodney Jackson, a biologist who established the Snow Leopard Conservancy. Stories like these have made Mongabay a favorite place on the Internet for researchers, students and teachers. Her parents were teachers, and she learned at an early age the importance of education. Her mother died when she was young, and when her father was caught because of teaching Polish, which had been made illegal(非法的) under the Russian government, she had to get a job. Years later she went to Paris to study physics and math. After graduation, she started the research on magnetism(磁力学). For the research she wanted to do, she needed more space than her small lab. A friend introduced her to Pierre Curie, another young scientist, who had some extra room. Not only did Marie move her equipment into his lab, but also she and Pierre fell in love and got married. For the discovery of radium, Marie and Pierre won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. Also for this work, she was given the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. During the first World War, Marie Curie knew that taking soldiers to a hospital when they needed operations was not always possible, so she designed the first moving X-ray machine and traveled with it along the front lines during the war. On July 4th, 1934, Marie Curie died in Paris, killed by one of her own experiments. For her struggles, she received two Nobel Prizes the first woman to win even one. Thanks to the knowledge she gained, thousands of lives have been saved. Great knowledge, however, is often a two-edged sword(双刃剑). Without the work she did we might not have many modern cancer treatments, or atomic(原子的)clocks, or even the computers we use every day. But through her work with radioactivity she can also be considered as the mother of the atomic bomb(原子弹).24. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born. The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans(风扇) had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.28.What led the British government to build the London Underground? A. Traffic jams and pollution. B. Population and pollution. C. Overcrowding and traffic jams. D. The poverty and subway problems. 29.How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem? A. It made the tunnels larger. B. It put fans in the tunnels. C. It cleaned the chemical gases in the tunnels. D. It reduced the number of passengers riding in the train.30.The underlined phrase “catch on” most probably means “_”. A. be troublesome B. become popular and fashionable C. keep up with D. seize31. Which of the following is TRUE? A. To relocate the workers homes outside London, the government built the subway. B. There were so many problems and delays that in 18th century the first subway opened. C. The subway greatly eased the pressure of traffic. D. There were not enough seats for the passengers the first day the subway opened.DWhy elephants rarely get cancer is a mystery that has confused scientists for decades. A study was led by researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah and Arizona State University, including researchers from the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation may have found the answer. According to the results, elephants have 38 additional modified copies of a gene (基因) that encodes p53, a well-defined tumor (肿瘤) suppressor, as compared to humans, who have only two. Further, elephants may have a more powerful mechanism for killing damaged cells that are at risk for becoming cancerous. In isolated elephant cells, this activity is doubled compared to healthy human cells, and five times that of cells from patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, who have only one working copy of p53 and more than a 90 percent lifetime cancer risk in children and adults. The results suggest extra p53 could explain elephants increased resistance to cancer. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer. Its up to us to learn how different animals overcome the problem so we can adapt those strategies to prevent cancer in people,” says co-senior author Joshua Schiffman, M.D., pediatric oncologist (肿瘤学家) at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Primary Childrens Hospital. According to Schiffman, elephants have long been considered a walking problem. Because they have 100 times as many cells as people, they should be 100 times more likely to have a cell slip into a cancerous state and cause the disease over their long life span of 50 to 70 years. And yet its believed that elephants get cancer less often, a theory confirmed in this study. Analysis of a large database of elephant deaths estimates a cancer death rate of less than 5 percent compared to 11 to 25 percent in people. 32. Why do humans often get cancer compared to elephants according to the passage? A. Elephants are bigger than humans.B. Elephants have more p53 than humans. C. Elephants are not as clever as humans.D. Elephants eat more than humans. 33. Which of the following is right according to the passage? A. Some damaged cells may be dangerous.B. Some damaged cells are not dangerous. C. Some damaged cells cant be cancerous.D. Some damaged cells in elephants bodies are more dangerous than those in humans bodies. 34. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Elephants have more cells than people. B. Elephants can get cancer easily. C. Elephants seldom die from cancer. D. Elephants often die from cancer. 35.
