HarryistakenawayfromtheDursleysbyakindlyescortfromHogwartsand

travelsthroughamagicaltimedimensiontothecastle-likeschool.Itstherethathe

makesfriendswithRonWeasleyandaspiringwitchHermioneGranger,becomes

thestarofhisdormitory'sQuidditchteam(kindoflikesoccerplayedon

broomstickshighintheair),andlearnsthathisparentswerealegendarywitchand

wizard.

Butnoteverythingisjolly.Inbetweenclassesinpotions,spellsandflying,Harry

alsomustfacesomewickedanddangerousenemieslikeDracoMalfoyandthe

wizardwhokilledhisparents,Voldemort.WillHarrytriumphoverevil?Willhis

Mr.andMrs.Dursley,ofnumberfour,PrivetDrive,wereproudtosaythattheywereperfectlynormal,

thankyouverymuch.Theywerethelastpeopleyou'dexpecttobeinvolvedinanythingstrangeor

mysterious,becausetheyjustdidn'tholdwithsuchnonsense.

Mr.DursleywasthedirectorofafirmcalledGrunnings,whichmadedrills.Hewasabig,beefymanwith

hardlyanyneck,althoughhedidhaveaverylargemustache.Mrs.Dursleywasthinandblondeandhad

nearlytwicetheusualamountofneck,whichcameinveryusefulasshespentsomuchofhertime

craningovergardenfences,spyingontheneighbors.TheDursleyshadasmallsoncalledDudleyandin

theiropiniontherewasnofinerboyanywhere.

TheDursleyshadeverythingtheywanted,buttheyalsohadasecret,andtheirgreatestfearwasthat

somebodywoulddiscoverit.Theydidn'tthinktheycouldbearitifanyonefoundoutaboutthePotters.

Mrs.PotterwasMrs.Dursley'ssister,buttheyhadn'tmetforseveralyears;infact,Mrs.Dursley

pretendedshedidn'thaveasister,becausehersisterandhergood-for-nothinghusbandwereas

unDursleyishasitwaspossibletobe.TheDursleysshudderedtothinkwhattheneighborswouldsayif

thePottersarrivedinthestreet.TheDursleysknewthatthePottershadasmallson,too,buttheyhad

neverevenseenhim.ThisboywasanothergoodreasonforkeepingthePottersaway;theydidn'twant

Dudleymixingwithachildlikethat.

WhenMr.andMrs.Dursleywokeuponthedull,grayTuesdayourstorystarts,therewasnothingabout

thecloudyskyoutsidetosuggestthatstrangeandmysteriousthingswouldsoonbehappeningallover

thecountry.Mr.Dursleyhummedashepickedouthismostboringtieforwork,andMrs.Dursley

gossipedawayhappilyasshewrestledascreamingDudleyintohishighchair.

Noneofthemnoticedalarge,tawnyowlflutterpastthewindow.

Athalfpasteight,Mr.Dursleypickeduphisbriefcase,peckedMrs.Dursleyonthecheek,andtriedto

kissDudleygood-byebutmissed,becauseDudleywasnowhavingatantrumandthrowinghiscerealat

thewalls."Littletyke,"chortledMr.Dursleyasheleftthehouse.Hegotintohiscarandbackedoutof

numberfour'sdrive.

Itwasonthecornerofthestreetthathenoticedthefirstsignofsomethingpeculiar-acatreadingamap.

Forasecond,Mr.Dursleydidn'trealizewhathehadseen-thenhejerkedhisheadaroundtolookagain.

TherewasatabbycatstandingonthecornerofPrivetDrive,buttherewasn'tamapinsight.Whatcould

hehavebeenthinkingof?Itmusthavebeenatrickofthelight.Mr.Dursleyblinkedandstaredatthecat.

Itstaredback.AsMr.Dursleydrovearoundthecorneranduptheroad,hewatchedthecatinhismirror.

ItwasnowreadingthesignthatsaidPrivetDrive--no,lookingatthesign;catscouldn'treadmapsor

signs.Mr.Dursleygavehimselfalittleshakeandputthecatoutofhismind.Ashedrovetowardtownhe

thoughtofnothingexceptalargeorderofdrillshewashopingtogetthatday.

Butontheedgeoftown,drillsweredrivenoutofhismindbysomethingelse.Ashesatintheusual

morningtrafficjam,hecouldn'thelpnoticingthatthereseemedtobealotofstrangelydressedpeople

about.Peopleincloaks.Mr.Dursleycouldn'tbearpeoplewhodressedinfunnyclothes-thegetupsyou

sawonyoungpeople!Hesupposedthiswassomestupidnewfashion.Hedrummedhisfingersonthe

steeringwheelandhiseyesfellonahuddleoftheseweirdosstandingquitecloseby.Theywere

whisperingexcitedlytogether.Mr.Dursleywasenragedtoseethatacoupleofthemweren'tyoungatall;

why,thatmanhadtobeolderthanhewas,andwearinganemerald-greencloak!Thenerveofhim!But

thenitstruckMr.Dursleythatthiswasprobablysomesillystunt-thesepeoplewereobviouslycollecting

forsomething...yes,thatwouldbeit.Thetrafficmovedonandafewminuteslater,Mr.Dursleyarrivedin

theGrunningsparkinglot,hismindbackondrills.

Mr.Dursleyalwayssatwithhisbacktothewindowinhisofficeontheninthfloor.Ifhehadn't,hemight

havefoundithardertoconcentrateondrillsthatmorning.Hedidn'tseetheowlsswoopingpastinbroad

daylight,thoughpeopledowninthestreetdid;theypointedandgazedopen-mouthedasowlafterowl

spedoverhead.Mostofthemhadneverseenanowlevenatnighttime.Mr.Dursley,however,hada

perfectlynormal,owl-freemorning.Heyelledatfivedifferentpeople.Hemadeseveralimportant

telephonecallsandshoutedabitmore.Hewasinaverygoodmooduntillunchtime,whenhethought

he'dstretchhislegsandwalkacrosstheroadtobuyhimselfabunfromthebakery.

He'dforgottenallaboutthepeopleincloaksuntilhepassedagroupofthemnexttothebaker's.Heeyed

themangrilyashepassed.Hedidn'tknowwhy,buttheymadehimuneasy.Thisbunchwerewhispering

excitedly,too,andhecouldn'tseeasinglecollectingtin.Itwasonhiswaybackpastthem,clutchinga

largedoughnutinabag,thathecaughtafewwordsofwhattheyweresaying/'ThePotters,that'sright,

that'swhatIheardyes,theirson,Harry',

Mr.Dursleystoppeddead.Fearfloodedhim.Helookedbackatthewhisperersasifhewantedtosay

somethingtothem,butthoughtbetterofit.

Hedashedbackacrosstheroad,hurrieduptohisoffice,snappedathissecretarynottodisturbhim,

seizedhistelephone,andhadalmostfinisheddialinghishomenumberwhenhechangedhismind.He

putthereceiverbackdownandstrokedhismustache,thinking...no,hewasbeingstupid.Potterwasn't

suchanunusualname.HewassuretherewerelotsofpeoplecalledPotterwhohadasoncalledHarry.

Cometothinkofit,hewasn'tevensurehisnephewwascalledHarry.He'dneverevenseentheboy.It

mighthavebeenHarvey.OrHarold.TherewasnopointinworryingMrs.Dursley;shealwaysgotso

upsetatanymentionofhersister.Hedidn'tblameher-ifhe'dhadasisterlikethat...butallthesame,

thosepeopleincloaks...

Hefounditalothardertoconcentrateondrillsthatafternoonandwhenheleftthebuildingatfiveo'clock,

hewasstillsoworriedthathewalkedstraightintosomeonejustoutsidethedoor.

"Sorry,"hegrunted,asthetinyoldmanstumbledandalmostfell.ItwasafewsecondsbeforeMr.

Dursleyrealizedthatthemanwaswearingavioletcloak.Hedidn'tseematallupsetatbeingalmost

knockedtotheground.Onthecontrary,hisfacesplitintoawidesmileandhesaidinasqueakyvoice

thatmadepassersbystare,"Don'tbesorry,mydearsir,fornothingcouldupsetmetoday!Rejoice,for

You-Know-Whohasgoneatlast!EvenMuggleslikeyourselfshouldbecelebrating,thishappy,happy

day!"

AndtheoldmanhuggedMr.Dursleyaroundthemiddleandwalkedoff.

Mr.Dursleystoodrootedtothespot.Hehadbeenhuggedbyacompletestranger.Healsothoughthe

hadbeencalledaMuggle,whateverthatwas.Hewasrattled.Hehurriedtohiscarandsetoffforhome,

hopinghewasimaginingthings,whichhehadneverhopedbefore,becausehedidn'tapproveof

imagination.

Ashepulledintothedrivewayofnumberfour,thefirstthinghesaw-anditdidn*timprovehismood-

wasthetabbycathe'dspottedthatmorning.Itwasnowsittingonhisgardenwall.Hewassureitwasthe

sameone;ithadthesamemarkingsarounditseyes.

"Shoo!"saidMr.Dursleyloudly.Thecatdidn'tmove.Itjustgavehimasternlook.Wasthisnormalcat

behavior?Mr.Dursleywondered.Tryingtopullhimselftogether,helethimselfintothehouse.Hewas

stilldeterminednottomentionanythingtohiswife.

Mrs.Dursleyhadhadanice,normalday.ShetoldhimoverdinnerallaboutMrs.NextDoor'sproblems

withherdaughterandhowDudleyhadlearnedanewword("Won't!").Mr.Dursleytriedtoactnormally.

WhenDudleyhadbeenputtobed,hewentintothelivingroomintimetocatchthelastreportonthe

eveningnews:

"Andfinally,bird-watcherseverywherehavereportedthatthenation'sowlshavebeenbehavingvery

unusuallytoday.Althoughowlsnormallyhuntatnightandarehardlyeverseenindaylight,therehave

beenhundredsofsightingsofthesebirdsflyingineverydirectionsincesunrise.Expertsareunableto

explainwhytheowlshavesuddenlychangedtheirsleepingpattern."Thenewscasterallowedhimselfa

thatinsteadoftherainIpromisedyesterday,they'vehadadownpourofshootingstars!Perhapspeople

Mrs.Dursleycameintothelivingroomcarryingtwocupsoftea.Itwasnogood.He'dhavetosay

Ashehadexpected,Mrs.Dursleylookedshockedandangry.Afterall,theynormallypretendedshe

NothinglikethismanhadeverbeenseenonPrivetDrive.Hewastall,thin,andveryold,judgingbythe

silverofhishairandbeard,whichwerebothlongenoughtotuckintohisbelt.Hewaswearinglongrobes,

apurplecloakthatswepttheground,andhigh-heeled,buckledboots.Hisblueeyeswerelight,bright,

andsparklingbehindhalf-moonspectaclesandhisnosewasverylongandcrooked,asthoughithad

beenbrokenatleasttwice.Thisman'snamewasAlbusDumbledore.

AlbusDumbledoredidn'tseemtorealizethathehadjustarrivedinastreetwhereeverythingfromhis

nametohisbootswasunwelcome.Hewasbusyrummaging(翻察)inhiscloak(斗篷),lookingfor

something.Buthedidseemtorealizehewasbeingwatched,becausehelookedupsuddenlyatthecat,

whichwasstillstaringathimfromtheotherendofthestreet.Forsomereason,thesightofthecat

seemedtoamusehim.Hechuckledandmuttered,"Ishouldhaveknown."

Hefoundwhathewaslookingforinhisinsidepocket.Itseemedtobeasilvercigarettelighter.Heflicked

itopen,helditupintheair,andclickedit.Theneareststreetlampwentoutwithalittlepop.Heclickedit

again-thenextlampflickeredintodarkness.TwelvetimesheclickedthePut-Outer,untiltheonlylights

leftonthewholestreetweretwotinypinpricksinthedistance,whichweretheeyesofthecatwatching

him.Ifanyonelookedoutoftheirwindownow,evenbeady-eyedMrs.Dursley,theywouldn'tbeableto
