MaterialsforAir,Dust,Noise,andWaterSealing

Scope

Thisstandarddescribestherequirementsofflexibleexpandedrubberandrubber-likematerialstobeusedasairanddustsealsorwatersealsandgaskets.Thesematerialsmayalsobeusedasisolators,rattleprotection,coversforgapsandothersuitableapplications.Thesematerialsaretypicallydiecutorslittowidthfromsheetstock,andmayhavepressuresensitiveadhesiveappliedtoone(1)side.

MaterialDescription.Materialsmeetingtherequirementsofthisspecificationwillbecomprisedoffour(4)classesandseveraltypes.

ClassI:Expandedrubberandrubber-likematerialstobeusedforair,dustandrattleisolators.Materialsinthisclasscanbeopencell,semi-opencell,semi-closedcell,orclosedcellmaterials.

ClassII:Expandedrubberandrubber-likematerialstobeusedforwatersealingatlowcompression(30%),andmustmeetthewatersealabilityrequirementsofthisdocumentMaterialsinthisclassareclosedcellmaterials.

ClassIIIAthroughE:Expandedrubberandrubber-likematerialstobeusedforwatersealing,butatgreatercompressionthanClassIlmaterials,andmustmeetthewatersealabilityrequirementsofthisdocument.Materialsinthisclasscanbeopencell,semi-opencell,semi-closedcell1orclosedcellmaterials.

ClassIIIA:Meetswatersealabilityat40%compression.

ClassIIIB:Meetswatersealabilityat50%compression.

ClassIIIC:Meetswatersealabilityat60%compression.

Class川D:Meetswatersealabilityat70%compression.

ClassHIE:Meetswatersealabilityat80%compression.

ClassIV:Expandedrubberandrubber-likematerialstobeusedforlightingapplications,andmustmeetthelightingrequirementsofthisdocument.MaterialsapprovedtoClassIVmustbesulfur-free.Materialsinthisclassshallbeclosedcellmaterials.Thesematerialsshallmeetwatersealabilityat40%compression.

PerTable1below,Classspecificapprovedmaterialscanbeusedinapplicationswheretherearelesserwatersealabilityrequirements.Forexample,anapplicationrequireswatersealabilityat50%compression(ClassIIIB);materialsapprovedtoClassIlandClassIIIAarepermittedtobeusedinthisapplication.

AllmaterialsapprovedtothisspecificationshallbelistedinintheGMMaterialsApprovedSourceList.Afteramaterialhasbeengrantedapproval,therequiredtestingforannualmaterialcertificationshallbeallpropertieslistedinTable3.

Materialsaredividedintoseveraltypes,dependingonthestiffness(compressiondeflection).

Materialscoveredinthisspecificationareresistantto+70℃continuousand+100℃excursion.Dependingonthebasematerialofthespongerubber,highertemperatureresistance(upto+100℃permanent)canbeobtained.Temperatureresistanceshallbeverifiedoneachfoammaterial,shallbepartofthedatasubmittedforapproval,andmustbespecifiedonthedrawingormathdatafile.

Note:Thisspecificationdoesnotcoversiliconefoams,polyurethanefoams,orpolyolefinfoams.ThesefamiliesoffoamshaveindividualGMWspecifications.ContactGMMaterialsEngineeringfortheappropriatefoamspecificationforthesematerials.

Remarks.Toproperlyusethisspecification,theinformationin1.4.1through1.4.4mustbeaddedtotheengineeringdrawingormathdatafile.

Specifypolymerbasematerial,e.g.,AcrylonitrileButadieneCopolymer(NBR),EthylenePropyleneDieneTerpolymer(EPDM),PolyvinylChloride(PVC),PolychIoropreneZStyreneButadieneBlend(CR∕SBR),etc.

IndicatetheADHorCOsuffixifanadhesiveorlowfrictioncoatingshallbeused.

Identifyapplicationsuchasinterior,exterior,underhood,orexteriorlighting.Specifictestsarerequiredforeachuse(seeTable4,Table5,andTable6).

ShelfLife.Thematerialshallbepackedtopreventpermanentdeformationwhenshippedorstored.Itmustmeetallrequirementsofthisspecificationaftersix(6)monthsstorageat+50℃.

MaterialssuppliedtothisspecificationmustbeapprovedbyGeneralMotors.

AlistofapprovedmaterialscanbefoundintheGMMaterialsApprovedSourceList.ThisGMMaterialFileisprovidedtothirdpartiestoreduceredundanttestingofmaterials.Ifapprovedmaterialalreadylistedisused,thepartsuppliercanuseGMMaterialFilereferenceforProductionPartApprovalProcess(PPAP)materialapproval.Ifthedecisionismadetouseanotyetapprovedmaterial,contacttheMaterials一FoamGlobalSubsystemLeadershipTeam(GSSLT)fordetailsontheapprovalprocess.ThematerialapprovalprocessmustbecompletedpriortoPPAPstartdateofthepartsuppliedtoGeneralMotors.

Engineeringqualificationsofanapprovedsourcearerequiredforthisstandard.OnlysourceslistedintheGMMaterialsFile(i.e.,GMSuppIyPower)underthisstandardnumberhavebeenqualifiedbyengineeringasmeetingtherequirementsofthisstandard.Toaccessthislist,referenceGMW14270forlatestlocation.

ForotherGMlocations,theresponsibleengineeringgroupshouldbecontactedtoobtaintheapprovedsourceinthatindividualcountry.
