文档简介

In my elementary school years, I was once detained in the teachers office for some “serious moral misconduct”, sending my seatmate home everyday and being a very close friend. Well, you may wonder, so what? The only problem is that she is a girl. And to make things worse, she happened to be very charming by childrens standard that my teacher reprimanded me severely for being over-enthusiastic, and maintained that I should stay away from her and concentrate on truly serious matters. With overdue respect to my teachers authority, I kept silent as if there were really something of an item going on between us. From then on, we were separated to sit in the diagonal corners of the classroom and were too embarrassed to speak to each other anymore. Not only did I lose one of my best friends to my silence, but also my teachers trust to my cowardly obedient manner. When I look back on my childhood experience, I was astonished by how the “matured” adults misinterpreted the childrens pure friendship. As if, theres no such thing as sincerity between the children through the eyes of grown-ups. While at the same time, I was more shocked by the childrens frightfulness in voicing the honest answers and stating the true circumstances. And the relationship between the teachers and the students become antagonized and precariously balanced. Education, we say, is about communication. Its a two-way street. The students should learn to be brave enough to speak up, at least once in a while. I do wish I could come back to my childhood and make my voice heard, whispering to that little boy to speak up and telling the teacher that innocence really is something worth holding fast to. Imagine a world in which Martin Luther King had failed to speak out against oppressive racism. How different our world would be like today? For centuries, people and countries have been fighting to make their voices heard. And today, freedom of speech is a notion which is deeply ingrained upon peoples mind. It is so important that some nations have even enshrined it in their constitutions. But why, we might ask, do people consider the right to make their voices heard to be so important? And what is so important about speaking out anyway? Well, it is the nature of man to enquire into things and to strive for self-improvement. Often situations arise when we are compelled to speak up for reform. However, if people are reluctant to express your opinions due to, for example, laziness, restrictions and fear, then much that needs reform will remain unchanged. Human progress depends upon the change and free flow of ideas whether in spoken or written form. But most of the time, people are reluctant to speak up. And for example, many times people just because of fear are unwilling to stand up and say the things they want. And built upon the sufferings of those who are brave enough to fight for it, freedom of speech is actually the things that weve always fighted. I should say that, conclude my speech by reminding all of you that, we should use our voices and to speak out with passion and conviction, for that is right and our right. Because I have to remind you that we should also use our ears to listen, with respect and understanding, for that is our duty. “Diane, can you speak a little louder, please?” Thats what my teacher said to me on the first day of school. I almost burst into tears as so many students turned to watch me sitting down in the corner that belonged to me. After school, my teacher found me, smiling, she said: “You dont have to be afraid of anyone. People just want to know about you so the next time just let them hear what you have to say. After so many years, I am still a shy person as I was fifteen years ago but the difference is I am not any more afraid of letting people know about me, hear about my ideas. People, as we are, are never isolated individuals. We all live on the planet where lives all the other people as well. So keeping oneself excluded would never work, or else we would always be trapped in that little corner of ours. We have to step into the world as we are in fact part of it. Ive always remembered what Simba said to her daughter: we are one. So whats to be afraid of? Since human beings are virtually linked souls. Just tell others what we really think, how we really feel. Even if we do have the wrong idea, we will have the chance to correct our mistakes. And if we dont, its all right. But if we never spoke our mind, we will never know what we are missing out in this world. We will never know what we can actually make of ourselves. And we will never know what is needed to live a life with other people. When there is giving, there is receiving. Thats how the communication circle works. We are all very blessed to have so many people hear our voice. So dont refuse the blessing for life is based on it. Just remember when the world knows more about us, we know more about the world. So today, can you hear my voice?“ What am I doing now? Im using speech to communicate with you. Im making my voice heard. Yesterday I told my parents I was nervous to death to come to this competition today. I couldnt sleep. I couldnt eat. I constantly have headaches and diarrhea. Honestly, I havent been so out of place and physically sick in my entire life. Instead of saying kind words to calm me down, he said, “Do you know that companies and industries has spent thousands of dollars just to let their advertisement show on the TV screen for less than ten seconds and you have got yourself an opportunity to make your voice heard in front of millions. How unique is this chance?” Suddenly I realized I have to seize this precious opportunity to make myself, my voice heard. People throughout the world, people throughout history have used various ways to communicate, and more importantly to make their voices heard. Willi
