C is for the conscientious (勤恳的)way you do your job. You may be all these things at the office, and more. But when it comes to getting ahead, experts say, the ABCs of business should include a P, for politics, as in office politics. Dale Carnegie suggested as much more than 50 years ago: Hard work alone doesnt make career (事业)advance. You have to be able to sell yourself and your ideas, both publicly and behind the scenes. Yet, despite the obvious rewards of being good at office politicsa better job, a raise, praisemany people are still unable or unwilling to “play the game. ” “Some people feel that office politics means some manipulative (工于心计的)behavior, ”says Deborah Comer, an assistant professor of management at Hofstra University. “But politics comes from the word polite. It can mean being kind and helpful, or even trying to please your boss, and then expecting something in return. ” In fact, today, experts define office politics as proper behavior used to gain ones own interest in the workplace. In many cases, this includes some form of socializing within the office environment-not just in large companies, but in small workplaces as well. “The first thing people are usually judged on is their ability to perform well on a consistent basis, ”says Neil P. Lewis, a management psychologist. “But if two or three people are up for a promotion (提升),each of whom has similar ability, a manager is going to promote the person he or she likes best. Its simple human nature. ” Yet, psychologists say, many employees and employers have trouble with the politics in the office. Some people, they say, have an idealistic vision of work and what it takes to succeed. Still others mistake politics for flattery (奉承), fearful that, if they speak up for themselves, they may appear to the flattering their boss for favor. Experts suggest changing this negative picture by recognizing the need for some self-promotion. 68. What does “office politics” mean according to the passage? A. The sense of humour is mysteriously connected with national characteristics. A Frenchman, for instance, might find it hard to laugh at a Russian joke. In the same way, a Russian might fail to see anything amusing (make sb. laugh or smile)in a joke which would make an Englishman laugh to tears. Most funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations have a worldwide request. No matter where you live, you would find it difficult not to laugh at, say, Charlie Chaplins early films. However, a new type of humour, which stems largely from America, has recently come into fashion. It is called “sick humour”. Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent (cause by force)death or serious accidents, Many people find this sort of joke distasteful. The following example of “sick hamour” will enable you to judge for yourself. A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on pestering his doctor to tell him when he would be able to go home. He was afraid of having to spend Christmas in hospital. Though the doctor did his best, the patients recovery was slow. On Christmas day, the man still had his right leg in plaster. He spent a miserable day in bed thinking of all the fun he was missing. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough. on New Years Eve he was able to hobble along to a party. To compensate for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than what was good for him. In the process, he enjoyed himself and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still mumbling something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg. 72. Whether you find “sick humour” funny or not will depend on _. A. your having been brought up in America B. the joke being related to a really comic situation C. your ability to see the funny side of an unpleasant event D. your ability to laugh until you cry 73. The man spent Christmas day feeling miserable because _. A. the doctor had failed to cure him B. he was not able to be with his friends C. being unable to walk, he did not enjoy the celebrations at the hospital D. he thought he might also miss the New Years Eve celebration 74. The point of the joke taken to explain “sick humour” is that _. A. no sooner was the man out of hospital than he had to go back in again B. the man should not have said how much he hated hospitals C. he would be unable to walk for the rest of his life D. the man had not got a leg to stand on 75.
