(see p. 23) 3. what is the general content of the courses in the second year study? 4.what are the objectives of the courses? 5.are you clear on the general design of the courses? 6.can you tell me what“the globalisation of english”is? “the globalisation of english” means that english has become the language of the world. unit 2 1. to a distance learner, a good planner has five functions. what are they? they are: helping someone manage ones time more efficiently and effectively; giving someone a sense of direction; relieving ones memorising too many details; giving ones life orderlineness; giving someone a sense of achievement whenever he/she looks back. 2. draw an academic year planner. 3.draw a daily planner. 4.can you translate the passage (on p. 7 below the table ) into chinese? have a try. 5.can you translate the quotation from c. n. parkinson (on p.8 below the table) into chinese ? have a try. unit 3 1. what factors does the enhancement of your english depend on? it depends on four factors. the first one is the amount of your daily exposure to english. the second one is the amount of time you spend in using english. the third one is the way you manage your learning process. the fourth one is the way you descipline yourself. 2.what is your daily exposure to english? (see p. 15) 3.what measures are you going to take to increase your daily exposure? (see p. 15) 4.what role does a textbook play in your learning? a good textbook is one that helps you develop your own way of learning rather than one that spoon-feeds you everything. 5.who is responsible for learning? the learner. 6.what is the function of a good textbook? it is to lay foundation on which i/you can develop my/ your own interest. unit 41. how many types of learning orientation do we have? what are they? and what features do they have? ( see p. 18) 2.can you identify which type of learner you belong to? 3.what are the learning strategies? (see p. 1921) 4.whats the difference between a method and a strategy? both are ways of doing things. a method is a special way of doing something. a strategy refers to the art of planning the best way to achieve your goal. this is the common between the two. but the two differ in their emphasis. “method” stress a scientific procedure of doing something. “strategy” on the other hand focuses on the effectiveness, in other words, on the result, the goal, i.e. on having things done. unit 51.what are self-management strategies? they are self-motivation, file-keeping, self-evaluation and self-reinforcement. 2.can you describe each of them in brief ? (see p. 21) 3.do you know the goals of the strategies? and how do you attain the goals? (see p. 22) 4. can you apply the strategies to your english-learning? and how? 5.what advantages does the strategy of file-keeping have? first, file-keeping itself is a way of practicing english. second, it helps you organize your learning, and organised learning is more effective than disorganised learning. third, through all the records you did, you can regularly assess you own study- your strengths and weaknesses your progress and achievement. 6.what do we mean by the phrase “internal standards” ? “internal standards” refer to those you impose on yourself. the standards set up by your local university are not internal, but external to you. your self-imposed standards can be higher or lower than the university ones, depening on your long-term, short-term goals and your ambition in learning english. and internal standards are more forceful than external ones, because they are self-imposed. they are therefore effective in maintaining learning quality. 7. do you have any internal standards? what are they? if not, set some now. (see p. 29) 8. what is the self-evaluation strategy ? self-evaluation is to check learning outcomes against internal standards, which are those your impose on yourself. 9.what is the self-reinforcement strategy ? self-reinforcement is to arrange rewards for successfully completing a course or an active. unit 61.what are the strategies of learning habits? they are understanding course desing; understanding unit design; self-recording; talking to self; directed attention; fluency first, correctness second; five- skill recycling; mode-switching and contextualisation. 2.describe each of them in brief. (see p. 33 and p50.) 4.which strategy of them do you use more frequently? give me an example. 5.in view of preparation, there are at least three kinds of self-recording or talking to oneself. what are they? one is free. that is, you talk freely to a cassette recorder of a mirror without any written preparation beforehand. the second is that you talk from your notes. this is a sort of half-prepared talk. the third is simply reading a text to a recorder or a mirror. 6. what advantages do the stratengies of “self-recording” and “talking to self” have? they are particularly useful to you as a distance learner in enhancing oral presentation, in monitoring and improving your pronunciation and intonation and skill in non-verbal communication. 7.do the 4 small tasks on pages 38-40. 8.what advantages does the strategy of “fluency first, correcthess second” have? it can be quite helpful in overcoming shyness and false pride, in improving fluency. 9.what advantages does the strategy of directed attention have? it is effective in enhancing active learning and in making the best use of turorials. 10.what abvantages does the strategy of “five-skill recycling” have? it is an active, interesting and effective way of reviewing and reinforcing what you have learned. 11.what advantages does the mode-switching strategy have? learners can easily switch from one mode of skill to another. 12.what advantages do the strategies of “understanding course design” and “understanding unit design” have? they will not only give you a sense of confidence, but also like a city map, give you a sense of direction. unit 71.what are the task-based strategies? there are 18 in all. they are acting; application; breaking down into elements; characterization; dramatising; giving an example; graphic aids; grouping; implementing; creating associations; modeling; note-taking; parallel writing, reverse translation; playing for time; resourcing; self-diagnosing; translation and using a checklist. 2.can you describe each of them in brief? if not, see page 50 and page 62. 3. can you tell me what their goals are? if not, see page 50 and page 62. 4. can you apply the acting strategy? give me an example.
