The common idea that most kids from kindergarten through college have of a scientist is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and several glass cups of mysterious color1 ful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority view scientists as strange people who spend 100 hours a week slaving away in a lonely laboratory. However, the reality is quite different. Recently Ive had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my laboratory and into Costa Rica. It supports a huge amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species (物种),which represents nearly 4% of the total species worldwide!First we worked alongside conservationists to preserve wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮 龟)rescue center. We helped the volunteers preserve turtle populations by removing rubbish from the shoreline to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic activity relating to earthquakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rainforest. After reaching the top, we went down and through waterfalls to the beautiful valley below! On the last day we got a hands-on introduction to rocket science where we learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station. During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesnt mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist is one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping preserve wild-life, learning about earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that schools should really stress that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring!21. According to the first paragraph, scientists are often believed .A. to work as slavesB. to behave in a strange wayC. to spend too much time in labsD. to do experiments in messy labs22. C Turning the lights out or wearing a blindfold while eating could be a quick way to lose weight, according to scientistsThe simple trick works because it stops diners eating for pleasure rather than for caloriesIt also triggers (引发) a part of the brain that is worried that unseen food may go badAn experiment by the University of Konstanz,in Germany, found that people who were blindfolded consumed nine percent fewer calories before they felt full, compared to those who could seeThey also vastly overestimated how much they had eaten because they could not see how much was left on the plateBlindfolded volunteers estimated they had eaten 88percent more than they actually hadScientists believe that not seeing food on the table also allows the body to know when it is full in real time rather than remembering past experiences where it might have taken a full plate to feel fullIn the experiment,50 people were blindfolded and 40were allowed to see their foodAll were told not to eat within two hours of the experimentThey were then given three 95g bowls of chocolate ice cream and invited to eat for 15minutesTheir bowls were taken away and the remaining icecream weighed, while the participants were quizzed on how much they thought they had eatenOn average the group who could see ate 116g while the blindfolded groups ate 105gHowever,the blindfolded group believed they had eaten 197g while compared with 159g for the nonblind volunteersThey were also asked how pleasant the icecream tasted and the blindfolded group rated lower than those who could seeThe experienced pleasure of eating was significantly lower in the blindfolded groupNot seeing the food might have decreased the appetiteSight plays an important role in the eating experience and in the overall dining experiencePrevious studies have shown that the visual influence of food plays a large part in the tasteWhile restaurants that allow diners to eat in the dark state that it triggers other senses,in fact eating in darkness is likely to taste far milder than usual28With the lights out, diners eat less partly because Athey want to quickly finish their mealsBthey trust their feelings more than everCthey focus more on fun than the caloriesDthey worry about the quality of the food29We can learn from the passage that the blindfolded group Aspent a much longer time eating the same foodBbelieved they ate more than they really didCdepended on past experiences to feel fullDthought the food tasted better than usual30The last two paragraphs tell us that Adiners are likely to lose their appetite eating in darknessBsenses rather than sight play an important role in the tasteCfindings of this experiment differ from the previous studiesDrestaurants benefit a lot from allowing diners to eat in the dark31The main purpose of the passage is to Aprovide statistics related to eating in the darkBoffer reasons for people to eat in the dark areasCinform the readers of the result of an experimentDpersuade the readers to lose weight in a new wayD This year Rio, a host of the Olympics 2016, is in the international spotlight.Phelps puts spotlight on cupping(拔火罐) Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps led American swimmers to a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay, but what grabbed media attention and led to stories and photos around the globe were the purple and red circles on his back.Michael Phelps of the USA is seen with red cupping marks on his shoulder as he competes during the 2016 Rio Olympics mens 200m butterfly in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil , Aug 8,2016.Facial expressions of Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui goes viral Chinas womens swimmer Fu Yuanhui has created a sensation online not just by winning the bronze medal in the 100m backstroke competition, but also by her facial expressions during the post-semifinal interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on Monday.
