课时跟踪练(一) Welcome to the unit & ReadingPre reading. AMark Twain was a great writer. He was from the USA.He was born in 1835. He was also a famous speaker. He was famous for his sense of humour. Many people liked to listen to him talk because he liked to tell some interesting stories to make people laugh all the time. One day Mark Twain was going to a small town because of his writing. Before he was going to leave, one of his friends said to him that there were always a lot of mosquitoes (蚊子) in the town and told him that hed better not go there. Mark Twain waved (摇动) his hand and said, “It doesnt matter. The mosquitoes are no relatives of mine. I dont think they will come to visit me.”After he arrived at the town, Mark Twain stayed in a small hotel near the station. He went into his room, but when he was just about to have a rest, quite a few mosquitoes flew about him. The waiters felt very sorry about that. “Im very sorry, Mr Mark Twain. There are too many mosquitoes in our town.” One of them said to him.Mark Twain, however, made a joke, saying to the waiter, “The mosquitoes are very clever. They know my room number. They didnt come into the wrong room.” What he said made all the people present laugh heartily. But that night Mark Twain slept well. Do you know why? That was because all the waiters in the hotel were driving the mosquitoes away for him during the whole night. 1That day Mark Twain went to the town _.Ato see one of his friendsBbecause he wanted to do something there for his writingCbecause he was told there were a lot of mosquitoes thereDto see one of his relatives解析:选B细节理解题。根据第二段“One day Mark Twain was going to a small town because of his writing.” 2The waiters felt sorry because _.Athey did something wrong to Mark TwainBtheir hotel was too smallCthe room was not very cleanDthere were quite a few mosquitoes in Mark Twains room解析:选D细节理解题。根据第三段“. but when he was just about to have a rest, quite a few mosquitoes flew about him.” 3All the people present laughed heartily because _.Athe mosquitoes were very clever and they didnt come into the wrong roomBthe mosquitoes knew Mark Twains room numberCMark Twain gave the waiters some nice presentsDMark Twain made a joke解析:选D细节理解题。根据第四段“Mark Twain, however, made a joke . You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, you can survive it.”Call it a flashlight for dark times: laughter just seems to adjust the attitude better than anything else. Inspirational (鼓舞人心的) speaker Steve Rizzo recalls a TV interview with an injured firefighter a few days after 911. The man had fallen more than 30 stories in one of the towers and had broken a leg. Everyone was crying, and the reporter asked, “How is it that youve come out of this alive?” He looked at her and without missing a beat, said, “Look, lady, Im from New York and Im a firefighter; thats all you need to know.”“Everyone laughed though the laughter was only a couple of seconds,” says Rizzo. “Sometimes thats all you need to catch your second breath. Laughter gives you that couple of seconds. Youre sending a message to your brain, and the message is: If you can still laugh even a little among the pain, you are going to be OK.”Of course, there is a difference between laughing off a serious situation and laughing off the fear that results in. The firefighter was doing the latter, states Rizzo, the author of Becoming a Humor Being, and so should we. “If there is anything we have learnt from 911, its how precious life really is,” she says.“We have to send a message that our spirit wont die. One important thing that unites us is our ability to laugh.”5The writer uses the examples of the comedian and the firefighter to show _.Alaughter is a good way to get rid of pain and fearBlaughter is the best way to cure psychological woundsCit is your attitude that decides whether you can survive the pain or notDlaughing off a serious situation is different from laughing off the fear that results in解析:选A推理判断题。 6We can infer from the passage that Steve Rizzo is _.
