While I was eating dinner at the fast food restaurant where I normally go when Im in a hurry, the manager announced that everybody had to leave the building. The place was crowded and that made the situation dangerous, as everyone was determined to get out first. To make matters worse, an elderly woman, who must have weighed 300 pounds, had just come up to the entrance, which was also the only exit. In the meantime, I remembered that I had left my purse in the chair I had been occupying when the announcement was made. It was certainly not convenient to return and get it, but I had to do it. When I finally got outside, I saw that the police bomb team had arrived and the men were studying the area. They finally found out that it was all a false alarm and the crowd went away. ATales From Animal HospitalDavid GrantDavid Grant has become a familiar face to millions of fans of Animal Hospital. Interesting yet based on fact, Michael Whites new book offers a true picture of Newton completely different from what people commonly know about him. Newton is shown as a gifted scientist with very human weaknesses who stood at the point in history where magic ended and science began.D|S8.99 Hardback 320 pp Fourth EstateISBN 1857024168Fermats Last TheoremSimon SinghIn 1963 a schoolboy called Andrew Wiles reading in his school library came across the worlds greatest mathematical problem: Fermats Last Theorem (法则). First put forward by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in the seventeenth century, the theorem had baffled and beaten the finest mathematical minds, including a French woman scientist who made a major advance in working out the problem, and who had to dress like a man in order to be able to study at the Ecole Polytechnique. Through unbelievable determination Andrew Wiles finally worked out the problem in 1995. An unusual story of human effort over three centuries, Fermats Last Theorem will delight specialists and general readers alike.D|S12.99 Hardback 384 pp Fourth EstateISBN 185702521021“Animal Hospital” is _.Aa news storyBa popular bookCa research report Da TV program解析:选D细节理解题。根据第一部分的“Tales From Animal Hospital will delight all fans of the program and anyone who has a lively interest in their pet”可知,这是一个电视节目。22In Michael Whites book, Newton is described as _.Aa person who did not look the same as in many picturesBa person who lived a colorful and meaningful lifeCa great but not perfect manDan oldtime magician解析:选C细节理解题。根据第二部分的“Newton is shown .science began.” 23The underlined word “baffled” probably means _.Ato encourage people to raise questionsBto cause difficulty in understandingCto provide a person with an explanationDto limit peoples imagination解析:选B词义猜测题。 24The purpose of these three advertisements is _.Ato make the books easier to readBto show the importance of scienceCto introduce new authorsDto sell the books解析:选D写作意图题。 BI was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldnt bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work. One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “Im awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldnt stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help. But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop. 25The girl refused to ask for help because she thought _.Ashe might be recognizedBasking for help looked sillyCshe was normal and independentDbeing found blind was embarrassing解析:选D细节理解题。由本文第一句“I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known.” 26After the girl got off the bus that evening, she _.Abegan to runBhit a person as usualChit a lamppost by accidentDwas caught by something解析: 选C细节理解题。由第二段前三句,特别是第三句“When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost.”可知选C。27At the request stop that evening, the girl _.Astopped a big lorryBstopped the wrong busCmade no attempt to stop the busDwas not noticed by other people解析:选 C细节理解题。 C。28What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?AOther vehicles also stopped there.BIt was unreliable for making judgments.CMore lorries than buses responded to the girl.DIt took too much time for the girl to catch the bus. 根据第三段“I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away.”和第四段的“But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by.” B。CThe United States has more tornadoes (龙卷风) than any other country in the world. In a normal year there are 800 to 1,000 tornadoes. Most happen in the middle part of the country. Tornadoes form when warm and cool air meet. In the Midwest, the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets the cold air from Canada. The usual tornado season is March through May. Tornadoes form most often in the afternoon and early evening. There is often no warning of a tornado. People who live in the Midwest know the signs (征兆) of tornado activity. The sky becomes dark, often a greenish color. Dark clouds appear in the sky and there is often large hail (冰雹). Suddenly, there is a loud sound, like a train or a jet plane. Sometimes, two, three, five, ten or more tornadoes can form over a large area. This type of tornado activity hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999. The day was stormy, with heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. As the storms continued, tornadoes began to form. Dozens of tornadoes hit towns and neighborhoods in Oklahoma, then in Kansas. Some stayed on the ground for several hours, destroying everything they touched. The tornadoes killed 43 people and injured 600 others. They destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. In some areas, not one home stood. In other areas, the tornadoes destroyed every home on the left side of the street, but didnt touch any homes on the right side. The tornadoes lifted people and cars into the air and then threw them back down to earth. So it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado.29What can we learn about tornadoes in America?AThey may appear in groups.BThey usually happen in the summer.CThere are more tornadoes in the Eastern States.DThere are more than 1,000 tornadoes every year. 由第二段中的“Sometimes, two, three, five, ten or more tornadoes can form over a large area.” 30The tornadoes that hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999 _.Atook place at the same timeBwere the biggest in historyCcame and went quicklyDbrought death and destruction解析: 选D细节理解题。 31What will the author most probably talk about next?ATornado dangers and warning signs.BHow to stay safe during a tornado.CDifferent kinds of tornadoes.DHow a tornado forms. 由第三段中最后的“it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado”可知,作者接下来很可能谈论在龙卷风来临时如何保护自己,故选B项。DMind controlImagine looking at something and being able to move it just by using your brain! That is exactly what the new technology called BrainGate can do with the help of a robotic arm, anyway.BrainGate is the idea of Professor John Donoghue and his team of researchers at the Brown Institute for Brain Science, USA. BrainGate is attached directly to the brain. First of all, gold wires are put into the part of the brain that controls movement. These are then connected to a small computer chip (芯片). When the person thinks about different movements, this creates electrical signals, which are picked up by the chip. After this, the signals that are created by the brain are sent back to a computer, which changes the signals into movements. Finally, the computer uses the robotic arm to carry out these movements. BrainGate can already be used to write an email or play computer games, just by brain power. The technology has already cost millions of dollars to develop and when it is available for use, it will probably cost thousands of dollars per person. There are still many challenges ahead for Donoghue and his team. They are currently planning a mini wireless version, which will allow people to be connected to the computer at all times. Donoghue also dreams of using this technology to help disabled people who cant move their arms or legs. He plans to connect BrainGate directly to their own paralysed limbs This will mean that the person can control their own body again, without relying on a robotic arm. This research is attracting the militarys (军方的) attention as well. However, it is easy to understand why scientists might be concerned about how thoughtcontrolled machines could be used by the military. 32What does the underlined word “These” in Paragraph 2 refer to?AWires.BBrains.CThoughts. DMovements. 根据第二段中的“gold wires are put into the part of the brain that controls movement . then connected to a small computer chip”可知,首先是把一些金线跟控制运动的那部分大脑连接,然后再把“这些线”跟一个小的电脑芯片连接。33According to the text, what is one of BrainGates disadvantages?AIt is too expensive.BIt needs improvement.CIt is difficult to control.DIt produces few movements. 根据第三段中的“The technology . dollars per person.” 34How will Donoghue help disabled people?ABy making BrainGate smaller.BBy developing a wirel
