结构、诗歌形式，这些都是坎特伯雷故事的成功因素。但作为中 世纪一位伟大的作家，乔叟的成功之处不仅仅在于他对英语诗歌形式 的改革，更在于其作品中，尤其是坎特伯雷故事中，对现实生活 的密切关注。 在前人的研究基础之上，本文运用文化研究及文本细读等方法分 析坎特伯雷故事中的现实主义。本文认为，乔叟对他所处时代现 实生活的大量生动描写、塑造既有代表性又很个性化的人物形象以及 对婚姻等现实问题的关注是其现实主义的主要表现。 本文结合十四世纪末英国的社会、文化背景，首先分析英格兰社 会在坎特伯雷故事中的整体反映情况。笔者将乔叟笔下的香客分 为六个等级，这六个等级反映了中世纪社会的分层。在描写世俗社会 的同时，乔叟也在作品中表现了教会各阶层的状况。文章的二、三章 分别探讨世俗社会和宗教领域在坎特伯雷故事中的具体反映。坎 特伯雷故事刻画了一系列世俗社会中的人们及他们之间在经济利益 和婚姻观念上的矛盾冲突。香客们穿着打扮时对布料、颜色及武器装 备的选择体现了他们的社会地位。宗教社会中，尽管少数神职人员追 求道德完美，但大部分神职人员过着奢侈的生活，逃避应尽职责，甚 至滥用权力，造成腐败横行。 通过塑造一系列现实生活中的人物，乔叟为我们呈现了十四世纪 晚期整个英格兰社会的全景。深切的人文主义关怀表明乔叟现实主义
