english lessons should be banned in chinese kindergartensa dramatically increasing number of chinese people start learning english in kindergartens because the globalization of english has taken place around the world and china has more contact with the english speaking countries. many parents across the country think learning english is their childrens top priority. however, after many years teaching and learning practice, the arousing voice argues that the disadvantages are more severe. many people propose the idea that english lessons should be banned in chinese kindergartens.there is a combination of factors lead to this trend. the chief contributing factor is that english is a main subject that students are supposed to not only pass but also gain a decent mark in college entrance examinations (shek ). the second reason is that english is considered as a stepping-stone to childrens academic fulfillments and the criterion of prominent universities to evaluate applicants who want to study aboard. in choosing kindergartens, many parents find schools that use english education because they think such schools give young children an early competitive edge (ching ). many parents pay money to native speakers to teach children to gain a perfect accent and also send their children to bilingual kindergartens which are reputed for english teaching methods. a survey suggest that 16.2 percent of parents choose to teach children to learn english by themselves, and 18.8 percent of them will hire a tutor, while 56.3 percent of them will choose english training classes, hoping english can be their childrens mother language (yan ), following the longstanding advice that children should learn english earlier. however, learning english in kindergarten is not account for excellent speaking skills but causes many problems. children will reduce their interest of learning english, affecting their study present and later. many students in high schools and universities cannot speak english fluently because they lack interest though they have learnt it for many years. they focus on how to do the exam but not how to horn their speaking skills so many of them can only speak “mute english” (huo 20). furthermore, many bilingual kindergartens in developed cities have high admission fees (wu ), which loads financial burdens to parents. parents push their children to study hard but children detest learning, which causes a vicious cycle because it violates the rule that “interest is the best teacher” (zhou 45). it causes a so called “english heat”(chen ) across the country with so many english contests, training courses and english learning products like cartoons and so on, but some of which are frivolous. children acquire language through their innate language nature and abilities (zhu et al. 83) and the social environment promotes their systems of pronunciation to be mature (piaget 64). but english is a foreign language not a second language for chinese people (zhou 87) because chinese has deeply rooted in chinese culture. children learn english in kindergarten but they do not have the appropriate language circumstances and ample opportunities (brice ) to use the language. most bilingual kindergartens cannot provide the advanced education for children because many managers of kindergartens spend much money and endeavor not in improving the qualities but in advertisements. some english teachers in kindergarten are unqualified because there is a lack of regulatory (zhu 297) over the issues such as how to evaluate teachers teaching abilities (huo 134) and they are fumbling while teaching and fail to “teach students in accordance with their aptitude” (chen 122). furthermore, learning english becomes a distraction for children to learn chinese (bialystok 182) because they are confused while learning two different languages simultaneously and finally, they will become mediocre in both languages. undoubtedly, chinese culture is valuable and cultural inheritance can only survive when next generations learn chinese well (zhu 297). the best time for children to learn their mother tongue is kindergarten-age (carlson 286) and they should understand their own language and culture first.learning english in kindergartens does harm to childrens language development and parents become stressful in the trend of learning english. to learn english earlier is not account for excellent speaking skills but it will reduce the interest of children to english, which causes problems in the long run. considering childrens nature and language learning and speaking circumstances, learning english in chinese kindergarten is inappropriate. chinese kindergarten should not give children english lessons. foreign language education
