aims of the unit listening to people talk about health getting familiar with the rules of keeping fit understanding and talking about health and health problems key words parts of the body back, chest, eye, heart, kidney(肾脏), rib, hip, breast, spine(脊椎), lung, liver, etc. symptoms to feel bad/ weak/ sick/ poorly/ nervous/ depressed, etc. to be out of breath/ to be short of breath/ to have a sharp pain in the chest/to cough badly/ to suffer from insomnia(失眠)/ to have a high fever, etc. common illnesses a bad cold/ a sore throat/ the flu/ stomachache/ diarrhoea(腹泻), high blood pressure/ diabetes/ heart attack/ stroke/ cancer etc. key structures questions for discussion you are going to talk about your physical condition. read the following questions and discuss them with your partner. how are you feeling today? did you sleep well last night? do you have problems going to sleep? how long have you had this problem? have you gained / lost weight recently? what are you going to do about it? do you get much exercise? what do you think we can do to keep fit? do you think health is more important than good grades/scores or a successful career? why or why not? grouping discussing and reporting additional questions: language focus here are some sentences and structures that you might find useful in discussing the above questions. im feeling very well/fine/extremely well./i couldnt feel better. im not feeling very well./i feel unwell./i feel awful/ terrible/under the weather/aching all over/tired all the time. i sleep soundly/like a dog/fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. im having trouble sleeping/getting to sleep/falling asleep./im suffering from insomnia/having nightmares in my sleep./i often wake up in the middle of the night/in the early hours of the morning. i sometimes need sleeping pills to help me go to sleep. i have a good/poor/weak digestion. its been rather a long time now. ive gained/lost about three kilograms this past month/this past two months. my weight fell fromkilos to kilos. i exercise every morning/seldom exercise/dont exercise much. exercising regularly/maintaining a healthy diet/early to bed and early to rise/having a simple lifestyle is very important to our health. to my mind,/in my opinion, health is more important than anything else/not as important as a good career/should be the concern of older people, not the young. taking a hot bath or shower/taking a walk/going swimming helps relieve stress/is very relaxing. dialogues or presentations related to the topic dialogue 1: m: whats the trouble? w: i feel dizzy and my whole body aches. m: how long have you been sick? w: two or three days now. m: hows your appetite? w: ive got no appetite. the sight of food simply turns my stomach. whats wrong with me? m: you seem to be generally run-down. dialogue 2: w: whats the matter, jack? you look pale. m: oh, i feel terrible. w: why? whats the matter? m: i have a splitting headache and a sore throat. w: why didnt you tell me ? m: i thought it might go away, but i feel worse this morning. im aching all over. w: hmm. you feel warm, too. you must have got a fever. theres a pretty bad flu going around, you know. dialogue 3: w: whats wrong with you? m: i have a burning stomachache. and i feel like vomiting, too. w: how long has it been like this? m: since yesterday. w: what did you eat yesterday? did you eat sea food? m: yes. i had some crabs at lunch and then i just felt terrible. w: yours seems to be a minor case of food poisoning. m: what do you think i should do, doctor? w: ill give you some medications for your stomachache and indigestion. and dont eat sea food for the next week or so. m: i wont, doctor. thank you. dialogue 4: m: what seems to be the problem? w: i hurt my left foot yesterday. i missed one step while coming down the stairs. m: (after examining the foot) you have a sprained ankle. its slightly swollen. how does it feel? w: rather painful there. what should i do, doctor? m: ill give you an x-ray to see if there is anything wrong with the bone. homework now make the similar conversations according to the given situations. use the structures above in your conversations where appropriate. one of your roommates has a bad cough. ask him or her what the matter is. discuss the symptoms with him
