Nowadays, young people tend to rush into independence. Many of them leave home to study or work while still in their teens. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this.Compared to the older generation, young people nowadays tend to be more independent at an earlier age. Especially, many teenagers leave home to study or work on their own. I am of the opinion that this new trend has both advantages and disadvantages. It goes without saying that earlier independence helps young people to better understand the people around them and the world as a whole, and to accumulate more social experiences, which are invaluable for their future life and career. Moreover, living on their own means, to a large degree, that young people have to face and overcome difficulties by themselves. Therefore, it may help to mold in them a sound and unyielding character during the crucial period in which a persons temperament is largely formed. However, as there are always two sides to every coin, we cannot turn a blind eye to the unavoidable disadvantages of early independence. First, people in their teens are generally still immature. If they are exposed without proper protection to all the temptations and evils of society, they are more likely to fall into a life of crime than people of the same age who still live with their parents. Second, they are inclined to allot their time and energy inappropriately, for they may have to spend the lions share of their time earning their own living. In summary, young people are well advised to give serious thought to both the advantages and disadvantages of early independence before making the decision to leave home and face lifes challenges alone.A recent survey shows that teenagers spend 14 hours watching television programs each week, but only 6 hours with their family members. Some people claim that this has an unfavorable influence on the relationship between them and their family members. Do you agree or disagree?According to a recent survey, teenagers spend 14 hours watching television each week but only six hours with their family members. I am in total agreement with the claim that this must have an unfavorable influence on the relationship between them and their family members.Human beings are emotional creatures who require care and love from their family members, while at the same time exchanging ideas with them, so as to maintain an understanding and intimate relationship with them. While watching TV, viewers are preoccupied with the programs, and feel no need to speak to others. If a teenager sits down in front of the TV right after returning home from school, and only reluctantly throws one or two words to his family members during the advertisement breaks, the other family members may deem this a sign of indifference to them, which may raise a communication barrier and lead to a deteriorating relationship between them. From my point of view, what teenagers are in urgent need of is to spend their limited spare time learning from two-way communication with other family members, many of whom have more social experience than they do. Such communication may divert youngsters attention from watching television programs filled with violence and misleading advertisements. All in all, I think that scientific and technological development should not be used by teenagers as an excuse for watching too much television, and young people should spend more time communicating with other family members.Scientific and technological advances have improved our daily lives. However, in many fields scientists cannot solve the problems they have created themselves. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give your reasons.Admittedly, scientific and technological advances have improved peoples daily lives and dramatically changed the way people live. However, I am a strong believer in the claim that scientists in many fields cannot solve the problems they have created themselves, for the following reasons:The creation of a new scientific and technological product is a purely academic matter, but its application may be affected by political and military factors, and the like. For example, the original purpose of cloning was simply scientific-to change undesirable genes at the embryo stage, and to alleviate pain and illness. However, some people with ulterior motives may take advantage of this technique to clone human genes. This is sure to cause serious moral uncertainty and chaos for the human race.Sometimes it is impossible for researchers and scientists to foresee the future application of the product they are working on. Atomic energy is a case in point. Its study and research are conducted with the aim of saving the worlds limited energy resources and optimizing the use of current energy sources, such as water. Yet people are saddened by the news that atomic technology is used to manufacture dangerous weapons for the purpose of threatening or even destroying other countries and innocent people. In conclusion, scientists in many fields find themselves helpless when it comes to controlling the application of the technology they have labored so hard to produce and to solve the problems they have created. There are various kinds of media used for communicating information, such as the theatre, films, TV, radio and books. Which do you think is the most effective? What are its advantages and disadvantages? It is an undeniable fact that there are all kinds of media used for information communication today, and they all have their own strong points. Yet, when it comes to effectiveness, TV, in my opinion, outdoes the others. In the first place, the popularity of TV makes it the most effective channel of communication. Nowadays, it is common for a TV-broadcast NBA game to have billions of people sitting in front of that little screen cheering their favorite sports stars. This would have been unimaginable in the days of traditional media such as books, theatres and films. In the second place, TV has no rival in the speed of information communication. When a historical event takes place anywhere in the world, TV is always the first to convey this message to us. Last but not least, the interactive way of communication that the latest TV developments have provided us with also makes it more effective and efficient. Some day, you might be able to do your grocery shopping just by pressing a button on your remote controller. However, as there are always two sides to every coin, the magic box also has its weak points. For one thing, in the crazy pursuit of audience ratings, some low quality programs flood the TV screen and exert unhealthy effects upon young people. TV is also sometimes used as a propaganda tool by governments, and this seriously weakens the authenticity of its messages. In a word, TV has both its strengths and its weaknesses. Yet this two-sidedness doesnt prevent TV being the most effective of all the media in society today. At present, people obtain most of their information from news reporting. However, some people think that we should not believe what journalists report. What is your opinion? What qualities do you think a journalist should have?Currently, news reporting is one of the major channels by which people become informed of various affairs around. the globe. However, some people believe that the journalists who furnish the reports do not deserve any trust. For my part, I agree to this viewpoint, and my reasons are as follows:In the first place, many journalists fabricate sensational incidents in order to make themselves conspicuous. Reporters, like many people in other occupations, now feel the fierce competition in their own circle. Consequently, some of them deliberately exaggerate or whitewash certain matters to gain the upper hand over their colleagues. Their reports are certainly not dependable. In the second place, some journalists will say anything to eulogize a certain enterprise, as long as they are given a considerable sum of money by the owner of the enterprise in question. Such news peop1e have no respect for their own profession, and will doubtlessly win no trust from their readers.Last but not least, some newspersons have no idea of the rule that news should be based rigorously on facts. Sometimes they just pick up some interesting hearsay. And then their active imaginations are brought to bear, so that a touching or enchanting story is mistaken for news. This kind of story can be an entertainment, but can never be taken as something true happening in the world. All in all, many news reports cannot be counted upon. However, if reporters or journalists strictly abide by their professional requirements and nurture professional qualities, namely being honest, righteous, insightful, and farsighted, and having a strong sense of justice and social responsibility, readers and reporters will have more mutual trust, and the world will surely be a better place. The overuse of modern technologies in recreational activities makes human beings less creative. Do you agree or disagree? It is universally acknowledged that modern technologies are widely used in our everyday entertainment activities, providing joy and happiness for all.: We enjoy kaleidoscopic TV programmes using signals received from satellites; we play music and show films on complex hi-fi stereos; and innumerable people surf the Internet every day for information and fun. Under these circumstances, many fear that the overuse of modern technologies in entertainment might result in the gradual loss of human creativity, as man grows to rely almost entirely on machines and high-tech toys to work entertaining miracles. Frankly, I regard this point of view as downright wrong. To begin with, it is precisely mans creativity that has made all the modern technologies possible and available, which in turn leads to their creative application in entertainment. Their wide application does not necessarily mean that man is losing his creativity, but simply indicates that this creativity has all along been turned into reality and put to use.Secondly, rather than stunting mans imagination, the overuse of modern technologies actually enables man to be more and more creative. For instance, Dream Works, the famous American film company, has been designing and producing cartoons using computer technology. From the uni-dimensional The Prince of Egypt to the most lifelike Shrek, whatever one can imagine, it can be created by that high-tech magician the computer, together with human intelligence and imagination. Finally, the development of modern technologies depends on mans creativity. TV sets, CD players, computers and all sort of high-tech toys are invented and developed by man. And his boundless imagination and endless thirst for more joy and fun will always inspire him to invent better technologies and then enjoy fresh varieties of entertainment. In sum, the fuss about how the overuse of modern technologies might be making people lose their creativity is totally unnecessary. For man, as a ceaseless explorer, will always develop new ways of fun using new types of advanced technologies. With the extensive application of modern science and technology, many people are finding that their lives are becoming much easier and more convenient. However, the overuse of such technologies for entertainment purposes has become a major concern for the general public. Some people are worried that too much use of advanced technologies in recreational activities might lead to less creativity in human beings as a whole. Personally, I support such a view in the following aspects:First and foremost, the overuse of modern technology in electronic games, for example, makes it so easy for the players to operate them that they tend to care less and less about the working principles of such games. Gradually, the game players will lose their curiosity about the unknown world, which is considered to be crucial for human creativity.Secondly, the overuse of modern technology in recreational activities makes such activities exhausting rather than relaxing. People who take roller-coasters often find them thrilling mentally and exhausting physically, while the original purpose of such entertainment devices was to refresh ones mind and relax ones body for better creativity.Lastly, the overuse of modern technology in recreational activities makes them so appealing to young people that they seldom have any interest in other matters. Many youngsters who are addicted to electronic games often devote much of their time and energy to certain games without inquiring into their nature.Although the proper application of modern technology to recreational activities is desirable, we should always be cautious about the overuse of such technologies, for they may make human beings less and less creative. Some people say that the best measure of a countrys success is the quality of life people enjoy. Others argue that a prosperous economy is the key factor in a countrys success. Discuss.Around the globe, every nation is striving to be wealthy, strong and successful. But how do we judge a nations success? Some believe that the criterion lies in the living standards of the people, while others quote a nations economic strength as the gauge. I d rather treat the two as equally important indices of a nations success, for they are intrinsically inter-dependent and also indispensable for a successful nation. On the one hand, a nation with considerable economic strength can ensure a comfortable life for its people. Only when a nation is economically developed can its people earn sufficient income to pay for their housing, clothing, food, education, entertainment and all the other necessities of a happy and meaningful life. No one would dare to call a nation a failure in which the citizens are merrily going to and fro, making money for themselves and for their motherland. On the other hand, man is the determinant element of a successful economy. People leading a comfortable and contented life will gladly labour and sweat for an even higher living standard and for an ever-flourishing homeland. In this way, a nations economy will be driven to a higher stage of development. More importantly, order and harmony prevails throughout the country, for everyone is striving for the same goal-their own and their nations success. In that case, with a full-fledged economy, a nation will have a much bigger say in the international community, thus securing for itself a higher political and diplomatic status in the world. Such a nation will undoubtedly be credited as a success. In a nutshell, a comfortable life for the people and a nations economic strength are both essential to a nations success. Only those countries that meet both criteria can fully develop themselves economically, politically and diplomatically. Then, the laurels of victory will belong to them and to no other.Nowadays, the quality of education is very low. Some people think that we should encourage our students to evaluate and criticize their teachers; others believe that this would result in a loss of respect and discipline in the classroom. Discuss. The normal practice at school (or at least in most Chinese schools) is that the students take the teachers as they are, accept what they are taught and do what they are told to do. Could the students be a little more active? Some concerned people believe that some change is needed, and that students should be encouraged to evaluate or even criticize their teachers so as to improve the quality of education, whereas others fear that such a practice might give rise to indiscipline and disrespect for teachers.Proponents of such a change hold that, by encouraging students to form and voice their own opinions of their teachers and what they teach, the latter would be able to gain a better view of how what they teach is received and perceived. The teachers would be able to find out for themselves whether or not they should slow down, speak louder, be a little more demonstrative and patient, or even switch to a more suitable teaching method. More importantly, the supporters of such a change contend that this practice would further encourage students to have original ideas, gain a deeper understanding of their lessons and learn the art of disagreeing. Furthermore, feedback from the students may also help to eliminate unqualified or irresponsible teachers. Hence, proponents come to the happy conclusion that in this way students and teachers would have better communication with each other, and thus the quality of education as a whole would be greatly raised.Opponents of such a practice argue that by adopting this critical method, students might be encouraged to be a little too eager to argue, to disagree and to criticize. They might even take advantage of this well-meant attempt to achieve their own petty purposes (such as having less homework), to make fun of the teacher, etc. In that case, the goal of teaching students to be well behaved and polite would be only a dream. At the end of the day, the opponents maintain that, as formal education is a serious matter, such a practice, though wellintended, should not be allowedAlthough both sides of the argument have their strong points, I personally agree with the former view. As to err is human, so it is the case with teachers. If the students have the chance to voice their opinions, not only will there be a cozy and liberal atmosphere in class, but both parties will benefit from the stimulus response process. Of course, all criticism and disagreement should be offered in a proper way and without ill intentions. Some people think that, as scientists contribute more to the development of our society tha
