A Study of Invisible Man Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005 nInvisible Man is the only one that Ralph Ellison published during his lifetime. It won him the National Book Award in 1953. The novel addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans in the early twentieth century, including black nationalism, the relationship between black identity and Marxism, as well as issues of individuality and personal identity. nInvisible Man is a novel which uses identity crisis as its theme. It shows the self-consciousness of modern African-Americans and their struggle for their own identities in the racist American society. nIn the novel, Ralph Ellison describes the process how a young African-American in the 1930s struggled to arrive at a conception of self-identity in the racist American society. nIt is about a nameless young African-American, who at first wanted to find a position in the society through education. n Unfortunately his dream was destroyed because he was expelled from the college by an accident. Then he began his long journey to struggle for self-acceptance. nHe was finally aware that he should throw off the identities others forced on him and the stereotypes, so that he could obtain his identity that would honor his complexity as an individual without sacrificing social responsibility. Symbols nColors -white and black nEllison is skillful in using colors. He uses the contrast colors white and black to symbolize the white and African-Americans in the American society in order to reveal the relationship between African-Americans and the white, especially the injustice that African-Americans suffer in the racist society. nThe eyes Ellison describes different eyes in this book.
