For this period we will learn about advertising. Id like you to work in small groups and finish the following warm-up tasks.Look at the advertisements on page 37 of the textbook closely and discuss each of the advertisement with the guiding questions.The first advertisement (ad) is about the computer operation training. By presenting a picture of an expanded computer and a teaching giving lessons, the ad directly and clearly conveys the message that a good computer-training program is available. Anyone who catches sight of the ad will be deeply affected because of the persuasive slogan on the right side of ad. It reads “ The way to success”. The picture of the monitor and the keyboard takes up almost the whole ad board so that it looks much larger than its usual size, and thus a striking impression is left upon viewers. I think this is quite a well-designed ad.The second ad is about a shampoo. It tries to persuade consumers to buy the brand of True shampoo. As can be seen, two bottles of shampoo are standing on the right at the bottom. Consumers attention will be successfully directed to the enlarged words, TRUE BEAUTY SHAMPOO, because the words are presented on the most noticeable space and they stand out. The slogan, I think is the most extraordinary. By using the expressions “ true beauty, true love, true happiness”, not only does the ad bring favorable feelings of the product to the consumers, but consumers are also ensured to remember the True brand because of the beautiful repetition of the word “true”. I enjoy the slogan very much.The topic of the third ad is a soft drink named Zhake. Audiences concern is directed to vivid image of the product. Certainly this is a successful ad, full of temptation. With the extreme close-up of the runners striding the hurdles in an exciting hurdle race and a bottle of Zhake drink hanging right before the competitors, the ad conveys the information that Zhake drink makes people energetic, excited and robust, just like the winning athletes in the race. Whoever takes a look at the ad, he or she will be effectively influenced and grow a strong desire of trying the drink. The brand Zhake will be unforgettable as the result of its repeated presentations on the up, middle and lower parts of the advertising picture. I believe the image of this ad is the most attractive one. Step 2 Making a list of words commonly used in adsWhat kind of words do you think you would need to talk about advertising and advertisements? Listen to part 2 and then compare your list with what the expert said. Do some research to find out which parts are better. By introducing a brand name to potential customers, and by associating the product with customers needs, ad-makers do their endeavor to appeal to customers emotions and influence their choices. But people react to ads in different way differently. Some think are useful and entertaining while others think they are annoying. As id often the case, good ads allow customers to make better decision, everything taken into consideration and improve society, bad ads often mislead customers by hidden information, a bait-and-witch trick and Famous persons effects.
