Teaching Procedures: Step I: Lead-in and Pre-reading1.Introduce The British Isles to the students.2.Say something about the passage: The British Isles.T: In the Warming up we have learned some knowledge about the UK and you know a lot about it . Do you know something most famous?S: Yes, Big Ben, the Tower of London, the River Thames, speaker corner, Fish and Chips.etc Show the slide: The map of the British Isles.3.Get the students discuss to answer the questions in Pre-reading.Step II: ReadingI. Scanning reading1. Play the tape of the text., and let the students scan the text at the same time, and then do True or False exercises. Show the slides: (True or False) (F) 1. Many people around the world study English, and they know a lot about British culture。 (F) 2. Great Britain is mad up of four countries. (T) 3. The Island of Britain is separated from France by the English Channel. (F) 4. Scotland is colder throughout the year and receives less rain. (T) 5. The European mainland has had a great effect on the culture of the people in the British Isles. (T) 6. The Scotland part of Ireland is now an independent republic. (F) 7. In modern times , people throughout the British Isles only speak English. (T) 8.Usually, when you are talking with a man from the Great Britain, you had better not ask him like this: “Are you English?”2. Let the students read the text and get the main idea of each paragraph.3. Ask the Ss to match the idea of each paragraph and join the lines on the screen. Careful reading1. Read the paragraph 1 (Brief introduction). Show the slide: (:图片) Para 1:Fish and chips; Big Ben; the Tower of London; Speakers CornerTeacher says something about this paragraph: T: In this paragraph, we can know something about England and Great Britain. Do you know what England stands for in the past?S: Fish and Chips, Speakers Corner, Big Ben and the Tower of London, etc. T: Yes, but this idea is past. Look at the last sentence of paragragh1, we will know the fact that Great Britain has changed now. Have you read it? S: Yes.2. Read the Para.2 (location)T: In this paragraph, we can know the location of British Isles, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Isle of Man. T: Can you say out these locations?S: Yes, British Isles lies off the west coast T: Well done. Read the Para.3 (climate) T: Now, look at Para3. It describes the climate of Great Britain. Can you say out the climate of each part of Great British Isles? S: Yes. T: Well done. Climate The British Isles: mild with a lot of rain Scotland: colder and receives more rain England and Wales: rains a lot Colder months: January and February Warmer months: July and August4. Read Para4 and Para5 ( Culture and French influence) T: Now, lets read the 4th and 5th paragraphs. Form here ,we will know the development British culture and the French influence. Look at the screen. We will answer these questions. Show the slide: Who can answer the question? S: T: Well done. Show the slides: .Para 4 and 5 Culture and French influence 1) What influence the culture of the British Isles? The culture of the people of the British Isles was influenced by the culture of the people on the European mainland. 2) What formed the basis of the British Isles? People from different parts of northern Europe who settled in England brought their own culture and languages. Their languages formed the basis of English. 3) Where did the native population move? Some of the native population moved to the island, mountainous parts of the island, the Ireland, Scotland and Wales. 4) What happened in 1066? In 1066, the England was conquered by the French. 5) Who spoke French? The upper classes 5. Read the 6th paragraph. ( history) T: Now, well read paragraph6. This paragraph tells us the history of Great Britain. Look at the screen and we will fill in the blanks. Who can do it? S: I can Show the slide: Para 6 History England and Wales formed the union in : 1536Scotland joined the union in: 1707 Ireland used to be part of the UK, and now is: an independent republic Northern Ireland is : part of the UK Small island such as the Isle of Man was ruled by the King of England 6.
