Well, Ive got certain news on politics that.(or Last night I spent nearly one hour surfing on the internet, and.)T: We quite appreciate the information that you have shared, and I hope that youve made a good sample to our class. Keep on collecting useful information and manage to transfer the information into your English speaking.Step II Warming up As this is the beginning class, teacher can start with a story to arouse students interest.T: Next Im going to tell you something about “Titan” and “Titanic”. I think most of you have seen the Hollywood film Titanic and you are all impressed with it, right?Ss: Yeah. T: As we all know, the terrible thing happened in 1912, but maybe you dont know there was one fictional story named The Wreck of the Titan written in 1898 whose content is surprisingly similar to what had happened to Titanic. It was written by a merchant seaman whose name was Morgan Robertson. In this story the author pre-figured the Titanic disaster and reflected many details that make people today still puzzling at, such as:Both ships set off from the same harborSouthampton; Both ships were built to be unsinkable; Both ships were on their maiden voyage; Both ships sank after striking an iceberg; On both ships were the elite of that time; Both ships had an inadequate number of lifeboats; Both ships were encouraged to break speed records during their first voyage; Only one third of the passengers on each ship survived. And the most astonished thing is that their names are so similar:Titan and TitanicAfter telling the story, teacher may allow students to talk about their feelings about the story.T: Thats my story. I think its horrible. What about you? Tell me what you are thinking now.Ss: I think it terrible, amazing and mysterious. (State their understanding about the story)When students finish their discussing, teacher can let them know what science fiction is and convert to this units leading role: Jules Verne and his books.T: Good. Science fiction is just like a mysterious world waiting for us to enter, but at first we will recognize one famous person who was named “the Father of Science Fiction”. His name is Jules Verne. He wrote a lot of magical novels such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 days. Ive told you to do some preparation on Jules Verne. How much do you know about him? Please tell us what they are.Ss: Jules Verne, French writer, who is often regarded as the father of science fiction, a visionary French novelist, a short story writer, and a dramatist. His books include Five Weeks in a Balloon, The English at the North Pole, The Wilderness of Ice, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Paris in the 20th Century, From the Earth to the Moon, Mysterious Island and so on. I have read Paris in the 20th Century which Jules Verne wrote in 1863. It is a novel about a young man living in a future world with skyscrapers of glass and steel, high-speed trains, gas-powered automobiles, calculators, and a worldwide communications network. The hero can not find happiness in this highly materialistic environment, however, and comes to a tragic end.T: From your introduction, we have had a deeper understanding of Jules Verne. In his books, there were many scientific facts that he didnt know or guessed. Now let us finish the following questions together to see if you know better.(1)What is the highest mountain on earth and how high is it? Ss: Mount Qomolangma, 8.848 meters in height.海拔8,848米的珠穆朗玛峰。(2)What is the deepest point in the ocean and where is it?Ss: Dead Sea which is located between Israel and Jordan.(3)Which is the longest river on earth and how long is it? Ss: It is Nile with 6,670 kilometers long.(4)What is the distance from the earth to the moon? What is it to Mars? What is it to the nearest star? Ss: It is around 384,000 kilometers from the earth to the moon.It is about 5,5800,000 kilometers from the earth to Mars. The nearest star to the earth is the sun , and the distance between them is around 147 million kilometers.(5)How far is it to the centre of the earth? Ss: It is 6,371 kilometers.(6)How high are the temperatures near the centre of the earth? Ss: Nearly 6,600 centigrade.(7)What is the longest distance around the world? Ss: Approximately 40,076 kilometers.(8)How fast does a balloon travel? How about an aeroplane? How about a space shuttle?Ss: The speed of balloon travel depends on the speed of the wind. The speed of an aeroplane is about 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers per hour. The speed of a space shuttle is at least 185,391 kilometers per hour. Step III SpeakingScience fiction is often about things we believe may be possible in the far future. So this part has provided several practical situations by means of making predictions. Do let the pairs use the functional items on Page 11 so as to learn how to express their beliefs and doubts in a proper way.Task 1T: Please turn to Page 11 and focus on the above chart. Could you tell the useful expressions on beliefs and doubts apart? Take I believe as an example, it is used for expressing beliefs.Ss: Beliefs: I believe.; I suppose.; Im sure that.; Im certain.; Its likely.; Doubts: I doubt.; Im not certain.; I cant imagine. It could be. but.I cant believe my eyes.T: Terrific! By the way, does anybody have any else expressions like these?Ss: Beliefs: I have great belief in.I bet.I have no doubt of.He feels confident of.We are convinced of .Believe me. You can count on me.Doubts: He is suspected of.She threw doubt upon.He has a distrust of.I was distrustful of.Do you believe in.He is in doubt (about) what to do.T: Thats really beyond my imagination! Very nice! And then you are supposed to make some sentences with these structures.Ss: I believe what that man has said.People used to believe that the world was flat. Im sure that youll succeed.I dont suppose this bird can speak.I cant imagine this cock can fly to the roof.We are not certain you are right.T: Well-done! Now turn back to Page 10, the speaking part. According to the instruction, we are going to do a pair work, that is, making dialogues under the following topics, space travel, life in 3098, young forever and creatures from outer space. You are encouraged to bring all of your imagination.Five minutes later.T: Well. It is high time to share your works. Which pair will be the first one?Ss:.Pair A: Our topic is “Space travel”A: I dont believe we can travel in the space.B: Why not? 150 years ago, nobody thought it was possible to fly in the sky by plane.A: But I think compared with traveling in atmosphere, to travel in the space is much more difficult.B: I dont think so. Well be able to develop, and I do be confident of visiting the Mars in the near future with my family. Pair B: Our subject is “Life in 3098”A: I am not certain if there will be any life on earth in the future.B: Come on. What do you mean?A: I think there must be some terrible disasters like volcanic eruption, earth quakes or other things.B: Dont worry. I am sure that solutions will be worked out. I have great belief in human beings ability.Pair C: Our topic is “Young forever”A: Do you think there will be a time when we can beat all diseases?B: I am quite certain about that. We neednt take any medicines, injections or operations one day. A pill a day will keep the doctor away. A: Doctors may find a way to keep us young forever.B: Oh, I cant imagine that. If it really comes true, how can I recognize who is
