Passage One There has long been a superstition among mariners that porpoises (海豚) will save drowing men by pushing them to the surface,or protect them from sharks by surrounding them in defensive formation.Marine Studio biologists have pointed out that, however intelligent they may be, it is probably a mistake to credit dolphins with any motive of lifesaving. On the occasions when they have pushed to shore an unconscious human being they have much more likely done it out of curiosity or for sport, as in riding the bow waves of a ship. In 1928 some porpoises were photographed working like beavers (海狸) to push ashore a waterlogged mattress. If, as has been reported, they have protected humans from sharks, it may have been because curiosity attracted them and because the scent of a possible meal attracted the sharks. Porpoises and sharks are natural enemies. It is possible that upon such an occasion a battle ensued, with the sharks being driven away or killed. Whether it be bird, fish or beast, the porpoise is intrigued with anything that is alive. They are constantly after the turtles, who peacefully submit to all sorts of indignities. One young calf especially enjoyed raising a turtle to the surface with his snout and then shoving him across the tank like an aquaplane. Almost any day a young porpoise may be seen trying to turn a 300-pound sea turtle over by sticking his snout under the edge of his shell and pushing up for dear life. This is not easy, and may require two porpoises working together. In another game, as the turtle swims across the oceanarium, the first porpoise swoops down from above and 关注友题,找历年试题 3 butts his shell with his belly. This knocks the turtle down several feet. He no sooner recovers his equilibrium (平衡) than the next porpoise comes along and hits him another crack. Eventually the turtle has been butted all the way down to the floor of the tank. He is now satisfied merely to try to stand up, but as soon as he does so a porpoise knocks him flat. The turtle at last gives up by pulling his feet under his shell and the game is over. 21. What is right according to the Marine Studio biologists? A) Porpoises will save drowning men. B) Dolphins are very intelligent. C) Dolphins sometimes save the men for fun. D) Dolphins are curious about many things. 22. Why do porpoises drive the sharks away? A) To protect the sailor. B) To practice their skills. C) To play with sharks. D) To fight their enemies. 23. C) The turtle pulls his feet under his shell. D) The turtle is hit another crack. Passage Two Some futurologists have assumed that the vast upsurge (剧增) of women in the workforce may portend a rejection of marrirage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The converse(反面)of this concern is that the prospects of becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to put off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy comes to life, the number of marriages also rises. The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wifes work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible(似是而非的). Tensions (紧张) grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. By raising a familys standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her familys financial and emotional stability. Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of womens inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities. 26. A. they are more likely to dominate their marriage partners B. their husbands are expected to do more housework C. their marriage ties can be strengthened D. they tend to put their career before marriage 29. A. they feel that they have been robbed of their freedom B. they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbands C. they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectations D. they tend to suspect their husbands? loyalty to their marriage 30. Which of the following statements can best summarize the authors view in the passage? A. The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country. B. Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage. C. In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent D. The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case. Passage Three According to psychologists, an emotion is aroused when a man or animal views something as either bad or good. When a person feels like running away from something he thinks will hurt him, we call this emotion fear. If the person wants to re move the danger by attacking it, we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a per sons thoughts. Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns how to act in certain situations because of an emotion. Psychologists think that there are two types of emotions: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight, and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals to a person. Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness, and disgust. In growing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy. Emotions may be weak or strong.
