And if you are really interested, you may arrange the next contact with him or her in order to continue your relationship. Then how to make a date or give your invitation? There are three types of invitation: informal, formal, and all-purposeall-purposeall-purposeall-purpose. When you are talking to a friend, you often use casual or informal language; when you are in a formal situation or talking to a stranger, you may use formal language. However, there are also some all-purpose expressions that may be used in either formal or informal situations. For example: an informal invitation to a friend. A: Bob! John and I are going to the baseball game tomorrow. Wanna come? B: Sure, why not? Another example: a formal invitation to a person one doesnt know very well. A: Hello, Mr. Smith! Were having a few people over for dinner tonight.Wed love to have you join us. B: Oh, thanks, but. hmm. maybe some other time. Ive got so much work to do. Ill be working at the office late tonight. AnswersAnswersAnswersAnswers totototo thethethethe Questions:Questions:Questions:Questions: 1. Three types of invitation: informal, formal and all-purpose. 2. Wanna come? BackgroundBackgroundBackgroundBackground Information:Information:Information:Information: Usually, you give a person some signal that an invitation is coming; you give a lead-in (start) so that you can find out if the other person is free and/or interested. e.g: 1. Say, I understand you like to play tennis. 2. Well, Ive heard theres a great new movie playing in the neighborhood now. In English, you often close a conversation by offering an apparent invitation. For example “Lets get together some time”. “Lets meet again soon.” These are often just ways of saying good-bye. It means that both people hope to get together again, but are not really issuing invitations; you usually reply with a general remark like, “Sure”, “Yeah”, or “That would be 27 nice.” or “Lets do that.” e.g. A: Well, its been good to see you. I guess Id better be going now. B: Nice seeing you again, too.Wereally should get together sometime. A: Lets do that. Well, see you soon. B: Bye. Youshould realize that a real invitation is usually followed by a specific time and date. e.g. Would you like to come over for dinner on Thursday evening? PartPartPartPart FourFourFourFourComprehensiveComprehensiveComprehensiveComprehensive PracticePracticePracticePractice SectionSectionSectionSectionA A A A Because of its history, the United States has a society with many different classes, groups, races and lifestyles. Within each of these groups, individual members are also quite different from one another. No one behaves exactly like anyone else. There are, however, several characteristics which most people have in common. Remember, these are general characteristics; many people you meet will not fit into these patterns. Take the invitation in social life as an example. Invitations in the U.S. are usually informal and often oral, but tell the time and place: “Will you come over Tuesday evening at 8:00?”Astatement such as “come and see me sometime” or “drop in” is not an invitation. It means that you must telephone before you drop 32 in. If you accept an invitation, it is important that you go and be punctual. The host expects you to call as soon as possible if you must cancel. It is considered rude to simply not show up. If you are not interested in the invitation, it is better to politely refuse the date or appointment in the beginning. Refusing a date is not considered rude in the United States. Aformal, written invitation requires a response and often a written response. If the invitation says “RSVP,” which is “repondez sil vous plait”, in French meaning please reply.Youshould reply whether you accept or not. The invitation will tell you how to reply and if the reply is expected before a certain date.If you cannot attend or do not plan to attend, say so. Do not say “yes” just to be polite. The “RSVP” is to help the host plan how much food and drink to prepare; an accurate count is necessary. If your invitation says, “Regrets only,” you only need to tell your host if you do not plan to attend. If you are unsure how to dress, call the host and ask, “What should I wear?” Student gatherings are much less formal. What time you arrive makes little difference, because people are coming and going all the time. Many student parties are “BYOB”, that means to “bring your own beverage”.Youwill make enemies rapidly if you go to parties and drink other peoples beverages. If a party is BYOB , then you should BYOB! Questions:Questions:Questions:Questions: 1. Which one is a real invitation? 2. What behavior is considered rude in the U.S.? 3. Youcan always ask for fruit juice or a soft drink. The evening meal is the main meal of the day in most parts of the United States. This is a time for family members, including children, to be together and talk about topics of interest. Guests are encouraged to join in these conversations.
