Lesson1Tell Me The Truth About LoveSome say that loves a little boy, And some say its bird. Some say it makes the world go round, And some say thats absurd, And when I asked the man next-door, Who looked as if he knew, His wife got very cross indeed, And said it wouldnt do. Does it look a pair of pyjamas, Or the ham in a temperance hotel? Does its odor remind one of llamas, Or has it a comforting smell? Is it sharp or quite smooth at the edges? Oh tell me the truth about love. When it comes, will it come without warning Just as Im picking my nose? Will its knock on my door in the morning, Or tread in the bus on my toes? Will it come like a change in the weather? Will it greeting be courteous or rough? Will it alter my life altogether? Oh tell me the truth about love. 早读英语精华本基础篇-Lesson2Think I Can If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you dont; If you want to win but think you cant; Its almost a cinch you wont. Lifes battles dont always go To the stronger and faster man, But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. I Think I Can 早读英语精华本基础篇-Lesson3I AMI am only one but still Im one I can not do everythingbut still I can do something I will not refuse to do that something I can do早读英语精华本基础篇-Lesson4Yesterday once more 昨日重现Thank you for the music, the songs Im singing Thanks for all the joy theyre bringing Who can live without it, I ask in all honestly What would life be? On that precious night, watching the lake, vaguely conscious, you said, “Our story is ending.”The rain was killing the last days of summer, you had been killing my last breath of love since a long time ago. I still dont think Im goanna make it through another love story. You took it all away from me. And there I stand; I know I was going to be the one left behind. But still I am watching the lake, vaguely conscious, and I know my life is ending. 早读英语精华本基础篇-Lesson9If the Dream is Big Enough(I)-为了心中的梦想(一)I used to watch her from my kitchen widow, she seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during recess.A sea of children, and yet tome, she stood out from them all.I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net.The boys always tried to stop her but no one could.I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone,She would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly in my eyes and without a moment of hesitation she said,“I want to go to college. The only way I can go is if I get a scholarship.I like basketball. i decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball.I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts dont count.”Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over and over again.Well, I had to give it to her - she was determined I watched her through those junior high years and into high school.Every week, she led her varsity team to victory.早读英语精华本基础篇-Lesson10If the Dream is Big Enough(II)-为了心中的梦想(二)One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms.I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong.Oh, nothing. Came a soft reply. I am just too short. The coach told her that at 55 she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team much less offered a scholarship - so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment.I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet.She lifted her head from her hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she really wanted to play for a good college, if she truly wanted a scholarship. That nothing could stop her except one thing-her own attitude. He told her again, If the dream is big enough, the facts dont count. The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed of freed a scholarship, a full ride, to a Division I, NCAA womens basketball team. She was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of and worked toward for all those years. Its true: If the dream is big enough, the facts dont count. The following true story captured our hearts. It happened several years ago in the Paris opera house.A famous singer had been cantracted to sing, and ticket sales were booming. In fact, the night of the concert found the house packed and every ticket sold. The feeling of anticipation and excitement was in the air as the house manager took the stage and said,Ladies and gentlemen ,thank you for your enthusiastic support.Im afraid that due to illness, the man whom youve all come to to hear will not be performing tonight. However,we have found a suitable substitude we hope will provide you with comparable entertainment. The crowd groaned in disappointment and failed to hear the announcer mention the stand-ins name .The environment turned from excitement to frustration. The stand-in performer gave the peiformance everything he had. When he had finished, there was nothing but an uncomfortable silence. No one applauded.Suddenly, from the balcony,a little boy stood up and shouted,Daddy,I think you are wonderful! The crowd broke into thunderous applause. We all need people in our lives who are willing to stand up once in a while and say,I think you are wonderful.早读英语精华本基础篇-Lesson12Dont Quit, Keep Playing Wishing to encourage her young sons progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her.Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.” When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother sawher little boy sitting at the key- board, innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boys ear, “Dont quit. Keep playing.”Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his lefthand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was mesmerized.Thats the way it is in life. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results arent exactly graceful flowing music. But when we trust in the hands of a Greater Power, our lifes work truly can be beautiful.Next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, “Dont quit. Keep playing.”
