It highlights the importance of physical activity as an essential part of a healthy, active lifestyle. It emphasises that, for some, early involvement in physical activity is the first step towards national or international sporting success.Active Schools provides schools and teachers with the support, training and resources they need to give children the best possible physical education and sports provision. Its range of integrated products and services has been developed and consolidated through extensive consultation with Sport Englands partners in the government, education, sport and health sectors. As Sport England is investing even more resources in supporting schools, practising teachers will continue to be involved in this consultation process. The result is a practical support programme that will inspire more children to take part in sport. Active Schools will evolve over time to meet the changing needs as aspirations of teachers and their students. An Integrated Portfolio Delivering Practical SupportActive Schools offers a comprehensive range of integrated products and services for the benefit of schools, teachers and children: The Active Schools Helpline was originally set up to provide support to schools applying for the Activemark and Sportsmark awards. The scheme, funded by the Sport England Lottery Fund, will enable 1000 coordinators to be in place by 2004. The coordinators will work in a family of schools setting with their partnership development manager and primary link teachers in feeder primary schools. Their remit will include developing PE and sport in the primary schools, developing links between schools and local sports clubs, establishing and supporting after-school and inter-school sports programmes, and developing leadership and coaching programmes for senior students. Coaching for Teachers continues to go from strength to strength. Over 35,000 teachers have attended courses to help them refresh and update their knowledge, learn about new sports and gain qualifications. New sports and activities have been added to the programme, which now includes 22 sports, sports for young people with disabilities, and a range of support courses in first aid, umpiring and refereeing. The Coaching for Teachers programme is designed to give primary, secondary and special school teachers the skills they need to run out-of-school-hours sports activities and clubs. Awards for All is a cross-distributor Lottery-funded programme offering one-off grants of between 500 and 5000. Awards can be used to help schools develop links with local sports clubs and to enhance primary and special schools out-of-hours sports provision.Funding can be used to recruit and train volunteers, to hire coaches, facilities and transport and to buy basic equipment to help you get started. Support resources and workshops are available through a range of Running Sport booklets, home study packs and interactive workshops. Sportsmark and Activemark training is also available for education infrastructure postholders, to help them promote the schemes to schools. TOP Play and TOP Sport will be available to all primary schools by July 2002. TOP Play is aimed at those schools teaching core skills and fund sports to children aged from four to nine. Both programmes provide training, resource cards and brightly coloured, child-friendly equipment. SPORTSEARCH is an interactive computer-based programme that helps secondary school students to find a sport that matches their physical attributes and interests. Through a combination of Internet and CD-ROM technology, SPORTSEARCH helps young people fulfil their sporting potential by identifying which sports they are most likely to be good at and directing them to local sporting opportunities. The Sport England Lottery Fund has a number of funding streams. The School Community Sport Initiative is available to improve community sports facilities on school sites. The initiative covers all primary and secondary schools and further education colleges for 16-18 year olds. Space for Sport and the Arts provides funding to primary schools in the most deprived areas to improve their sports and arts facilities for dual school and community use. Active Schools is based on the principle that every child should develop a love of movement, physical activity and sport, and enjoy the lifelong benefits of sports participation.Sport England will measure the programmes success against a set of challenging targets that are in line with the long-term, national targets set out in the Governments strategy document, England: the Sporting Nation. They are: 20% more young people taking part in out-of-school-hours sport 20% more girls showing a strong interest in leisure-time sport 10% more boys showing a strong interest in leisure-time sport. In partnership, looking aheadIn developing Active Schools, Sport England has worked closely with a number of partners across the education, health and government sectors. There has been close collaboration and consultation with many organisations. These include: British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education (BAALPE) British Heart Foundation British Sports Trust Department for Culture, Media and Sport Department for Education and Employment Department of Health Health Development Agency National Coaching Foundation (NCF) Physical Education Association of the United Kingdom (PEAUK) Qualification and Curriculum Authority Youth Sport Trust. The continued involvement and advice of these bodies will be crucial to the future success of Active Schools.Going live: forthcoming initiativesActive Schools will continue to develop and expand over time. The following new products are set to go live: Adults Other Than Teachers (AOTTs) are coaches, sports development officers or volunteers who assist with the schools physical education and/or out-of-school-hours sports activities. Working with PEAUK, BAALPE and NCF, Active Schools has developed two levels of training and support for AOTTs. The first is a school-led mentoring pack (to be piloted in early 2001), the other a three-hour Physical Education Awareness course for more experienced AOTTs. This is to be piloted in the summer term. Both elements of the programme will be available from January 2002. The Active Schools Primary Sports Day Toolkit is a pick-and-mix pack full of practical ideas, results sheets and certificates to help teachers run their best-ever sports day. The resources will be piloted in selected schools in the summer term, and will also be available nationally from January 2002.New Opportunities Fund - Playing Fields and Green SpacesSport England has been allocated 31.5 million for a Playing Fields and Green Spaces programme. There are two major strands to the programme: 22 million is intended for the provision, protection and improvement of playing fields and green spaces, and 9.5 million is for the improvement of school playgrounds and for 10 demonstration projects for community play for children and young people. The fund is to be used to give communities sustainable playing fields, green spaces, school playgrounds and young peoples play areas that have recreational use but also contribute to the development of sporting skills. Priorities for the fund will be areas with a shortage of playing fields, particularly those in the poorest parts of England. Sport England will be looking for projects that have a strategic need and are maintained and managed for long-term use.School playgrounds at primary and secondary schools will also benefit from funding to improve their use, design and management so that playtime is an enjoyable, healthy and sporty time. Potential schools will be approached and asked to work up an application. The range of funds will fall into three categories: small projects of between 5,000 and 10,000 (the majority of the allocation) about 20 medium projects up to 25,000 about six large projects up to 50,000.Sport England will also be looking to fund some exciting and innovative projects for community play for young people. For the school playground projects, Sport England will be working closely with Learning through Landscapes; for the playing field projects, with a range of partners such as the National Playing Fields Association. The programme will be launched in Spring 2001. Potential projects will be identified and targeted through regional consultations carried out by Sport England regional offices.Active Schools Products and ServicesProduct/serviceEligibilityKey featuresActive Schools Helpline:0800 169 2299All schools Open all year, 8.30 a.m. to 5.00p.m., Monday to Friday Will answer all your queries on Active Schools products Helps with queries on Activemark and Sportsmark applicationsActivemark/ActivemarkGoldPrimary, middle-deemed-primary and special schools with primary-aged pupils Recognises and rewards outstanding physical activity programmes Free British Heart Foundation Active School Resource Pack for schools intending to applySportsmark/Sportsmark GoldSecondary, middle-deemed secondary and special schools with secondary-aged pupils Prestigious accreditation scheme Recognises and rewards outstanding PE and school sport programmes Revised criteria and application processSchool SportCoordinatorsSelected secondary and primary schools working in partnership in deprived areas Support for PE and sports development Schools working together Widening sporting opportunities both within a
