Tracking Super HeroesCharlene GalluzzoAAHPERD 2010 Midwest District Elementary Teacher of the YearWVAHPERD 2005 Elementary Teacher of the Yearcgalluzzaccess.k12.wv.us Visual skills are an important element in the degree of success one has with catching, striking, balancing and moving. The eye has 14 muscles that need to be developed for one to achieve ultimate performance. We rely heavily on visual stimuli to respond and perform a variety of tasks. Because tracking is a dynamic activity that encompasses many factors, it is important to teach the skills in isolation first, increase the difficulty as skills are mastered and add loading to build new neurological pathways. Possibilities are endless in creating tasks that are challenging and fun for all students! In addition, tracking skills (vergence, peripheral vision, focus, and eye-hand coordination) come into play in the academic classroom as well. Students must focus on words far to near when Smart boards, power points, document cameras or old school chalkboards and whiteboards are used to deliver information to students. A student must be able to scan across a written page, use fine motor skills with handwriting and interpret symbols that create words. Spending a few minutes on visual exercises can pay huge dividends in the classroom and the gym.Volley Defenders Suggested grade level: 3rd and up Equipment: 1 Liteflight ball & 1 hoop/groupMusic: Dig Deep TECHNO BOUNCESet-up: Mark a line and place the hoop 30 feet from that line.Lesson focus: Volley, dynamic balance and teamwork Formation: 2 Pairs facing one another in a single file line Description: Players will work as a super hero team to complete a volley task to save the planet. Class is divided into groups of 4-6 players. The ball must stay off the floor. Starting at the hoop, Group A-player 1, volleys the ball to Group B Player 1. After the volley, that player rotates right and switches to the back of the line. Group A - Player 2 volleys to Group B Player 2 and Player 2 then volleys to Player 1 in Group A. This shuffle pattern of players continues until the team travels down to the line and back to the hoop. When they complete the challenge, place the ball in the hoop, high 5 and celebrate!Variations: - Use a balloon, if students are having trouble controlling the Liteflight ball. Use a heavier ball to increase the difficulty of the task. - If there are students with limited mobility or someone in a wheel chair, shorten the distance to travel and create a single filed line so that the entire group is travelling forward and the less mobile student or wheel chair student does not have to change position in the line. Tracking HeroSuggested grade level: K through 5Equipment: Bean bag or any object that can be thrown and caught safely for each studentFormation: Scattered in shared space (3 feet from the extension of arms in helicopter position)Music: Anything with a beatLesson Focus: Tossing and catching, tracking, sports skillsDescription: Students get an object to throw and find a safe space in the activity area. Place the object at feet and check to see that you are a safe distance from others. Await further instructions. Beginners Pick up your bean bag and place your hands under it (pinky to pinky with palms facing the ceiling) at waist level. Gently push your hands upward to pop the bean bag in the air. Use your eyes to watch it up and down (keeping the head still). Catch it at belly button or waist level. Perform 10 catches, “Ready, set, go!” Work through the entire routine slowly. Students will improve with practice. The difficulty is controlling force and maintaining catching it at waist level for the first 5 tasks.Tracking Routine: (10 each)1. Center2. Left 3. Right4. Across5. Toss with 1 hand, catch with 2 (limit height to reach at first), while alternating throwing and catching hands. 6. Toss with 1 hand higher, catch with 2 above head (thumb to thumb) while alternating throwing and catching hands. .7. Toss across, a little higher than reach height and claw down with the opposite while alternating throwing and catching hands. Variations/Modifications: - Once taught and practiced, this routine can be performed as an instant activity, an after drink break activity or to warm-up for a throwing game.- Modifications are easily made by changing the type of object being thrown. (Start with scarves or plastic grocery bags with K-1). Objects: Scarves, plastic grocery bags, different weighted balls and critters.- Reduce the number of catches to be performed.Additional challenges: On Higher Tosses - How many claps can you do before you catch it?- How close can you catch it to the floor?- Can you toss and turn a turn, turn or full turn and still catch it?- Can you stand on 1 foot and do the routine?Assessment: How many catches did you have today? Record it in your portfolio.Cross-curricular: Subtract the number of misses from the number of possible catches. Howd you do?cgalluzzoaccess.k12.wv.us Tracking Super HeroesSuper PowersSuggested grade level: 2nd and upLesson focus: Visual Training (vergence, tracking, eye-hand coordination and peripheral vision) Grouping: pairsSpace: A great limited space activity. Can be done in stations, in the classroom or in the cafeteria.Music: Any type of slower, steady beat or nonePencil Push-ups (Sports Vision Wilson, Thomas A. and Falkel, Jeff 2004)Activity focus: Vergence ability to cross and uncross the eyes to maintain single (binocular) vision from near to far and far to nearEquipment: 1 pencil or a pen, index card and 1 pen/pencil with which to write (each pair)Description: Tell the partner to keep his or her head still. The assistant holds the pencil (eraser side up) 2 feet in front of the students nose telling the partner to focus on the eraser tip. 1. The assistant instructs the partner to tell when he/she sees 2 pencil erasers.2. Measure or approximate the distance from the partners nose and record the result on the index card.3. Repeat 3 times.Assessment: Approximate the distance the pencil was from the nose (or use a tape measure), perform the task 3 times and average the 3 scores. The goal is 0 - 2 inches from the nose.Coin Flips (Sports Vision Wilson, Thomas A. and Falkel, Jeff 2004)Activity focus: Eye-hand coordinationEquipment: 12 count egg carton, quarter to flip (each pair)*Egg carton should be marked as follows: using a black magic marker number the top row, odd numbers (1-11) and bottom row, even numbers (2-12). *For visually impaired change size or color of numbers.Description: Place the quarter in the number 1 hole and hold the carton at a comfortable level. The person holds the egg carton with the lid facing away from them toward their partner. Flip the quarter in sequence 1-12. If it falls out or goes into the wrong number slot, place it in the last slot correctly completd. Assistant counts (box cars) to see how long it took their partner to complete the task. Switch after 2 minutes to allow the other partner to practice.Variations: - Time how long it takes to complete the task 3 times.- Do math problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division).- Use individually wrapped large gumballs instead of a quarter (I used eyeballs at Halloween).- A 30 count egg carton can be used to create a different task (letter or shape recognition and spelling - Mel from Ohio). Working left to right put the letters of the alphabet and in the last 4 slots - circle, square, triangle and rectangle. You can shout out letters, shapes or words or flash cards can be used to match the spelling.cgalluzzoaccess.k12.wv.us Tracking Super HeroesStraw Piercing (Sports Vision Wilson, Thomas A. and Falkel, Jeff 2004)Activity focus: Eye-hand coordination and peripheral visionEquipment: Drinking straw, uncooked spaghetti (each pair)Description: The partner holds the straw in front of his partner, 16” away from his/her nose with the ends pointing to the sides. The other partner holds one strand of spaghetti in each hand, about 8” away from the ends of the straw.1. While focusing intently on the center of the straw, the partner attempts to insert the spaghetti strands at the same time into the opening.2. If the spaghetti strand misses the opening, pull back the hands and repeat the attempt from 6”.3. Give the partner 3 attempts before switching.Variations: - If successful, repeat attempts with straw held at different angles and heights which will require different positions of gaze (9 cardinal positions superior up, up, superior right, left, straight ahead , right, inferior left, down and inferior right).- For younger students, an paper towel roll and unsharpened pencils can be used instead of the straw and spaghetti strands. Larger straws can also be used.- “Quick Draw” (Rick Stakel, Liberty ES, Loudoun County, VA)1. Straw held vertically by one partner above head level with spaghetti strand visible above the straw.2. Other partner has catching hand against his/her leg.3. On a count of 3, straw holder drops the spaghetti and catcher tries to snag it out of the air before it hits the floor.Planet ChaosSuggested grade level: 3rd through 5thActivity focus: Throwing and catching, motor skills and teamworkEquipment: Between 50-72 objects to throw (may vary in size and weight), 1 hoop per teamGroup: 2-4 players on a teamFormation: Objects to throw in center of play area, all hoops located equal distance from center, at least 6-9 feet from the hoop on either side.Description: Number off (1,2, in group). This determines the order for taking turns. Player 1 starts with foot inside of hoop, on “go” command, he/she leaps to the center of the floor, picks up and object and throws it to player 2 who is standing behind the hoop. If player 2 catches it, the object is placed into the hoop but if dropped or overthrown, it stays outside the hoop for that round and may not be picked up. Continue to rotate through in sequential order throughout the round. Be sure students stay to the right of the hoop when they are moving (facing it). At the end of the round count the collected objects and quickly record it on the card. Get ready for round 2. Repeat the process.Variations:- Groups can play through rounds with no time limit until all objects are collected.- Switch motor activity after all members of the team have had a turn to throw. - Stick with a locomotor movement and play “perfection” no drops, must throw until caught. Modification: - Limited movement or wheel chair students may be designated as a thrower one round and catcher the next round. - They may also use a vest (pinnie) to assist in catching the object.Assessments: Play 5 rounds, record the score and calculate the average. cgalluzzoaccess.k12.wv.us Tracking Super HeroesPLANET CHAOSTeamwork Assessment: How did we do? 1.
