文档简介

Topic: Elements on the Periodic TableObjective(s):1. The student will input data from the periodic table given a spreadsheet application.2. The student will sort data using a spreadsheet application.3. The student will graph data using a spreadsheet application.TEKS Covered:8.8 A The student knows that matter is composed of atoms. The student is expected to:1) describe the structure and parts of an atom2) identify the properties of an atom including mass and electrical charge8.9 B Interpret information on the periodic table to understand that physical properties are used to group elementsDAY ONEI. Statement of Objective(s) & Purpose“The periodic table is used to organize the information we know about elements. What are some things we already know about the periodic table? student response Today we will begin an exploration of the periodic table, using a spreadsheet program to organize our information in different ways. Each of you will learn to sort and graph data using Excel, and then describe the relationships you discover.”II. Instructional Input & ModelingDirect students to start the application Microsoft Excel. Model the process of creating column headings for the spreadsheet. Column headings should include Atomic Number, Element Name, Symbol, Atomic Mass, Neutrons, and Valence Electrons. After confirming that all students have set up their columns as indicated, model the input of data for the first element on the periodic table, Hydrogen. following is an example of how a students spreadsheet should look at this point:III. Independent PracticeStudents should continue the input of data on to the spreadsheet for subsequent elements. Circulate about the lab, observing student progress to ensure adequate completion. The specific number of elements included on the spreadsheet will depend on the amount of time left in the class period, but no more than 18 (up to Argon) are required to observe the necessary trends. If students finish early, they may take the opportunity to format their spreadsheets, trying out different options such as centered columns and underlined/bold headings. IV. ClosureAs students finish their spreadsheets, show them how to save their work to the proper student directory. The title of their spreadsheet should include their name for easy identification later. Student spreadsheets should be similar to the following example:DAY TWOI. Statement of Objective(s) and Purpose“Yesterday we input data from the periodic table in to a spreadsheet. What are some reasons we would want to organize information like this? student responses Today you are going to learn how to use a spreadsheet to sort and graph your data. Sorting and graphing can help us make observations that we might not be able to make otherwise.”II. Instructional Input & ModelingThe students will graph and sort the data on their spreadsheets and answer questions pertaining to their observations. See the worksheets below for instructions. The teacher should help the students step-by-step with the graphing and sorting, but then allow the students to answer the corresponding questions independently.III. ClosureStudent worksheets should be collected from each student as the assignment is finished. Elements on the Periodic TableHow to graph data using Microsoft Excel1) Highlight the first column of data. Click the cell containing the column heading Atomic Number. Holding down the mouse button, drag the cursor down to the last cell of data.2) .NAME:DATE:PERIOD:Periodic Table Excel WorksheetDirections: Answer the following questions pertaining to the information on the periodic table1. Which element has 5 protons? _ 2. What number on the periodic table tells you the number of protons? _3. What does the valence electron number tell you? _4. How many neutrons does Silicon have? _5. Sort the elements by element name in ascending order (A-Z). Why is the periodic table not arranged this way? _6. Sort the elements by their valence electron level number in ascending order (A-Z). What do you notice about the elements that have the same number of valence electrons?_7. Sort the elements by atomic number (this should put them back in their original order). Why would this be the best order for the periodic table to be arranged?_8. Highlight the column with the chemical symbol and atomic mass. Now graph the da
