The College traces its founding to 1742 by followers of John Amos Comenius, the 17th century Moravian bishop whose humanistic ideals helped to shape modern education. Those ideals that learning should be available to all, that teaching should be in accord with human nature, and that education should be applied to practical uses, are much in evidence at Moravian. Today, the College enrolls students from a great variety of socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; provides for highly personalized learning experiences; and offers many opportunities for students to direct their education toward individual and professional goals. The College expresses its Moravian heritage in musical and artistic programs of great distinction, which are shared with the Bethlehem community. Together with its cultural offerings, Moravians handsome historic campuses, the community service of its undergraduates, and its programs of graduate and professional education for adults make it a valued part of the fabric of Bethlehem. Its Moravian Theological Seminary, an ecumenical learning community preparing men and women for Christian leadership, is a global resource. John Amos Comenius, a Moravian bishop, was called the father of modern education for his revolutionary teaching principles. Moravian is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, right in the heart of the Lehigh Valley, which is a thriving metropolitan area of more than 700,000 residents. Bethlehem is about an hour and a half west of New York City and about an hour north of Philadelphia. Got milk? Well, Charlie Decker does. One of the many notable alumni in Moravian College. He was actually the creator of all the Got Milk ad campaigns. Moravian boast two beautiful campuses. The main street campus which is in the center of daily life for all Moravian students, and the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus in the heart of Bethlehems historic district, which is home to the art and music departments. Students travel the eight blocks between the campuses by college busses. Moravian enrolls about 1600 students from a variety of socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as from 21 states and more than 10 foreign countries. Admission to Moravian college is competitive, and things like SAT scores and high school records are evaluated in addition to extracurricular activities, community service, and potential contribution to the college. Just to give you an idea, 30 percent of incoming freshmen graduated in the top 10 percent of their class, and the average range of SAT scores is 1510 to 1780. Admission wise at Moravian, we feel strongly in using what we call a holistic review process, meaning that we wanna really look at the entire person not just one aspect of that person. But were also looking for students who again, with the leadership aspect, the co-curricular activities, the recommendations, the ability to write a strong essay. Tuition and fees for Moravian students run about 28,000 dollars per year, and room and board cost average about 8,000 dollars but can vary slightly depending on their resident hall. Moravian College offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music Degrees, and 32 major fields. Some of Moravians most popular programs include biology, English, education, psychology, economics and business, sociology, music, and art. In terms of neuroscience, we do encourage our students either to participate in research projects with faculty here at Moravian, as we do for all our science majors. Or, what we can also do is encourage them to apply for summer research opportunities at larger institutions. And we recently had a student go out to Montana and she did a significant research project up there. And in fact, shes now at Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine. Moravians career planning and placement system encourages the exploration of goals in the freshman year to jump start students futures. And more than 90 percent of graduates are employed full-time or enrolled in graduate or professional schools within 6 months of graduation. If there was one thing that I could change for my-about my freshman year, I would come in to Moravian undecided as a major. With the liberal arts curriculum, you really can have that opportunity to take all those classes to kind of get an overview of what you like. You really dont need to make that decision right away. You can take those wide variety of classes and really get a better understanding of what you wanna do. Moravian has nearly 120 full-time top quality professors with an amazing 90 percent of them holding a PhD or the highest degree attainable in their field. In addition, the college has a very low 12 to 1 student to faculty ratio, allowing students to work closely with their teachers. When I think of Moravian, I think of a place where students find a very, very strong support system to learn where they can discover and nurture their talents. We have a sense of community here which I think is very, very valuable and has been a hallmark of institution as long as Ive been here. And in that regard, the expectations of relationship between students to faculty are close. Moravians 19 varsity mens and womens Greyhound Athletic teams compete at the NCAA division 3 level in the newly formed landmark conference. While their Greyhound football team competes in the Centennial Conference. Moravian College offers housing units which vary from large traditional residence halls, to small group units, fraternity and sorority houses, and apartments and townhouses. This gives students lots of choices to live on campus. Dorm life is great here. Youre guaranteed housing for 4 years. You start off on a regular freshman dorm on a floor and then as you get older, you can move into apartments and houses that are provided on campus by Moravian. Whats to do after class you wonder? Unique clubs like jazz, choir, equestrian, and theater, as well as Greek life are just a few of more than 70 organizations which are available to Moravian students. I bet you didnt know that Moravian has a reputation for excellence in music, and theyre internationally renowned choir tours throughout the United States and abroad. We try to travel with the choir every year, at least locally and then every 4 years or so, internationally. And we have a trip upcoming to Germany, Austria, and Italy. And were really looking forward to that. And we hope to make it-travel also in the future with a band and other groups as well. If youre looking for a 4-year school that maybe small in size but big on educational and career opportunities, be sure to check out Moravian College today.
