Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these area would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world. In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources (资源) : land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the worlds wood supply.Rainforests are often called the worlds drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the worlds shrinking rainforests.25. Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they _A. reflect more heat into the atmosphereB. bring about high rainfall throughout the worldC. rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16 Centigrade D. reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth26. What does the word “this” underlined in the third paragraph refer to?A. We will lose much more than we can gain.B. Humans have begun destroying rainforests.C. People have a strong desire for resources.D. Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests.27. It can be inferred from the text that _.A. we can get enough resources without rainforestsB. there is great medicine potential in rainforestsC. we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained landD. the level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns28. What might be the best title for the text?A. How to save rainforests B. How to protect natureC. Rainforests and the environmentD. But the truth is that you can have last nights leftovers in the a. m. if you want to.I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早餐) , and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they dont have time, others think theyre saving calories (卡路里), still others just dont like breakfast food. But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when youre trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R. D., who developed the super-easy eating plan for this years “ SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if its loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researcher at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last nights leftovers - it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if i tell myself, “ You can always eat it tomorrow, “ I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it. you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories.
