The Garuda also features in the coat of arms of Indonesia and the city of Ulan Bator (the capital of Mongolia).,Location,Thailand, is a constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar to the northwest, by Laos to the northeast, by Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast, by Malaysia to the south, and by the Andaman Sea (安达曼海) to the southwest.,Thailand is composed of four main regions. The northern mountainous region contains numerous ruins and temples, the ancient city of Chieng Mai (清迈), and Thailands highest peak, Doi Inthanon (茵他农山 ).,Present,Today Thailand has a population of 54 million people, the vast majority of whom are of Thai ethnicity. Significant minorities of Chinese, Malay, Khmer, Mons, and various hill tribes also reside in Thailand, in addition to tens of thousands of refugees in border camps from the more troubled countries of Southeast Asia.,Economy,Thailand has a relatively diversified export-oriented economy that grew rapidly in the latter part of the twentieth century until the crash of 1997. Manufacturing and tourism led its growth, but agriculture continued to play an important role employing over 60 percent of the workforce.,Economy,The country remains a major producer and exporter of agricultural products, including rice, rubber, and tapioca (木薯). The Thai alphabet was invented by King Ramkamheng the Great in 1283 inspired by the ancient Indian alphabets and Pali languages through the medium of the old Khmer character. Thailands people regard their royal family with a respect bordering on awe.,Major cities,Bangkok Chieng Mai Pattaya,Bangkok,Bangkoks full name can be translated to: “The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra (因陀罗), the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarma“,Bangkok is considered to be one of the worlds tourist hotspots. Bangkok is Thailands major tourist gateway, which means that the majority of foreign tourists arrive in Bangkok. The city boasts some of the countrys most visited historical venues such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun.,Grand Palace 大皇宫,Official residence of the King,Chieng Mai,Chieng Mai is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand. It is located 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains in the country.,A street in Chieng Mai,Chieng Mais historic importance derived from its strategic location on the Ping river and major trade routes. The city has long been a major center for handcrafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving.,Pattaya,Pattaya is located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 165 km southeast of Bangkok. The city of Pattaya is a self governing municipal area.,“Good Guys go to Heaven, Bad Guys go to Pattaya” !,Pattaya has derived part of its reputation as a tourist destination due to the sex industry and the resulting nightlife.
