Health Sciences Centre,Student Placement Patient Unit Profiles,Jackie MacLean Clinical Placement Coordinator Health Sciences Centre jmacleanhsc.mb.ca Ph: 1-204-787-2927,PROGRAMS at HSC,Cardiac Sciences, Family Medicine, Oncology & Rehabilitation/Geriatrics Program Central Support Services Child Health Program Emergency Medicine Program Mental Health Program Child & Adolescent Mental Health Program Renal Program Surgery Program Womens Health Program,Cardiac Sciences, Family Medicine, Oncology & Rehabilitation/Geriatrics Program,RR5 RR5 is an inpatient rehabilitation unit that provides comprehensive rehabilitative nursing care to patients with Spinal cord injuries, Amputations and various neuro musculoskeletal conditions. In addition, a number of the patients cared for on RR5 have a broad spectrum of medical co-morbidities. The nurses of the rehabilitation unit are uniquely qualified to facilitate recovery of the individual to the highest functional, psychosocial, and physical levels possible. The rehabilitation nurse is an integral part of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team which is comprised of physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, vocational counselor, recreational therapists and spiritual care. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the patient and their family, rehabilitation nurses assess, plan, perform, coordinate and evaluate rehabilitative care based on each individual patients unique circumstances, goals, and most importantly their abilities rather than their disabilities. The rehabilitation nurses together with the interdisciplinary team ensure that individuals impacted by disability are provided with the knowledge, tools and resources they will require in order for their successful return to the community GD6 A 15 single bed HEPA filtered unit that specializes in the provision of care to patients with acute haematological malignancies and/or diseases. Complex medical and nursing care includes administration of high dose chemotherapy and blood and marrow transplantation. A close working relationship is fostered and maintained with CancerCare Manitoba.,CENTRAL SUPPORT SERVICES,Medical Relief Team The Medical Relief Team (MRT) provides short term nursing coverage to the units within the Health Sciences Centres Medicine Programs Clinical Teaching Units as well as the sub-acute medical units. Surgical Relief Team The Surgical Relief Team (SRT) provides short term nursing coverage to the units within the Health Sciences Centres Surgical Program. Vascular Access Team The Vascular Access Team (VAT) provides assessment, initiation, monitoring of intravenous sites for patient within the Health Sciences Centre excluding the Childrens Hospital and the Womens Hospital. These services are available seven days a week 24 hours a day. The VAT also provides a consultative service for the assessment and placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) from Monday through Friday from 0730 1545.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,CH3/CK3 Pediatric Surgery/Burn Unit: A 22 bed unit for surgery and burn patients, including two monitored beds for closer observation of higher risk postoperative patients. CH5 A 20 bed unit; 10 transitional care beds and 10 acute medical beds. Typical patient groups include: brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, children requiring long-term IV or TPN, CF patients, children with eating disorders, children with developmental disabilities/complex medical needs, and children requiring multiple investigations. CK5 Pediatric Medicine: A 16 bed medical unit including hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant, nephrology, renal transplants, neurology, endocrinology and cardiology patients,CH4 Acute Pediatric Medicine: A 22 bed unit with monitoring and isolation capability for acute medical pediatrics. Services include cardiology, respirology, genetics, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders. Pediatric Special Care Unit (PSCU) A 6 bed unit for technologically dependent children requiring long-term care. Focus of care is on teaching and coordination of care/services to enable caregivers to manage their childs care in the community. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) A 9 bed critical care unit that cares for children with critical medical and surgical problems.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) An 18 bed unit for critically ill newborns. The Provincial Neonatal Transport Team works out of this unit including NICU Nurses, Physicians and Respiratory Therapists Emergency The Childrens Hospital Emergency Department cares for children who present with all levels of emergencies with access to all pediatric specialties. Operating Room The OR has 6 OR theaters as well as a location for local procedures. Surgical procedures encompass all services with the exception of Cardiac Open Heart Procedures.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,Pediatric Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) A 7 stretcher bay unit responsible for the care of postoperative pediatric patients recovering from a variety of surgical procedures. Pediatric Day Unit (PDU) The PDU is located on CH3. The goal of the Unit is to provide a setting for children needing tests or treatments that can be provided on an outpatient basis rather than as an inpatient. A procedural sedation team provides sedation for children undergoing painful procedures. Childrens Clinic As the Outpatient Department of Childrens Hospital, the Childrens Clinic has more than 50,000 patient visits per year in its 35 subspecialty clinics.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,Pediatric Day Surgery Unit The Pediatric Day Surgery Unit prepares children coming in for any type of surgical procedure. Following the surgery, any children being treated on an outpatient basis i.e. going home the same day return to this unit for post-op recovery. Pediatric Hemodialysis Unit The four-station unit provides hemodialysis for up to eight children receiving dialysis three or more times a week. This unit allows pediatric patients many advantages including flexibility for children who attend school and coordinated clinic visits so that each patient experiences fewer trips to hospital. Child Health Relief Team (CHRT) The Child Health Relief Team (CHRT) provides short term nursing coverage to the units within the Health Sciences Centres Child Health Program,Emergency,Adult Emergency Department (ED) serves over 45,000 patients annually. As an integral part of the Provincial Trauma Program, the Adult Emergency Team cares for patients with multiple traumas from across Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and Northwestern Ontario. This 19,000 square foot ED features comfortable, private surroundings for patients and their families, with large exam and treatment cubicles, walls between patient cubicles and a large waiting room. It incorporates state-of-the art design and systems to enhance infection control and safety for both patients and staff. A sophisticated Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) automates such functions as triage, patient tracking, orders, results, documentation and discharge. Fast, easy access to clinical information provides for improved patient flow through the Emergency Department.,Medicine Program,GB3 An interesting and diverse unit consisting of 10 acute medicine and telemetry beds and 11 medical, cardiology, and surgical day/night care beds including an IV administration room for outpatients. Currently, the main activity in the short stay area of the unit is centered on the pre and post-procedure care of cardiac patients and surgical patients requiring an overnight stay.,RR6 A 16 bed medical and surgical unit comprised of patients with rheumatic disorders characterized by musculoskeletal manifestations and multi-system involvement. The surgical component of the unit consists of orthopedic trauma patients such as fractured hips and ankles. A Day Hospital on the unit supports the rheumatology patients through education and treatment. GH6 A 29 bed unit focusing on the care of patients with diseases or abnormal function of all intra-thoracic organs except the heart and its vessels. The scope of service for the surgical care extends from the preoperative assessment to active postoperative and rehabilitative postoperative care. The medical care consists of acute management, stabilization, and rehabilitative care.,Medicine Program,GD4 A 30 bed Clinical Teach Unit (CTU) providing care for the complex medical patient as well as providing specialized post surgical care and monitoring for the renal transplant patient population. GA4 A 30 bed Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU), specializing in the provision of nursing care for complex medical patients with multi-system failure, in addition to general internal medicine, the unit is actively involved in the care of oncology patients, hemodialysis patients, and Hepatology patients. The unit promotes and encourages nurses to take an active role in the multidiscipline approach to patient care.,Medicine Program,GH4 A 30 bed Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU) that provides care for a variety of complex adult medical patients. The unit includes a 6 bed High Observation Unit (HOBS). Medical patients here are usually more acute and require more intensive nursing assessments including ECG monitoring. Nurses on the unit have an active function in all aspects of patient care along with the rest of the multi-disciplinary team. GD5 A 24 bed sub acute adult (non-teaching) medicine unit. Patients are admitted through ER, from home, or from intensive care; however, the majority of patients are transferred in from the clinical teaching units (CTUs) on the 4th floor. Patients transferred in have completed the acute phase of their illness and are currently stable, but still require medical treatment and intervention, and longer term discharge planning. All patients have been made non-teaching prior to admission/transfer to the unit,Medicine Program,Mental Health Program,Addictions Unit : (GB2) An 11 bed short stay unit that provides care to adult patients going through the acute phase of withdrawal. Patients may also have a co-occurring medical and/or psychiatric diagnosis. Inpatient and outpatient group programs are provided as well as a community referral process for continued rehabilitation programs. Dual diagnosis enhanced - CODI initiative. Forensic Program (PX3) Forensic Program: A multidisciplinary program with the mandate of providing psychiatric assessment and treatment to mentally disordered, accused, and incarcerated persons within the criminal justice system for the entire Province of Manitoba. Treatment and assessment takes place on a 14 bed secure inpatient unit. An outpatient component is associated with the program.,Mental Health Program,Mood Disorders Program: (PX2) A multidisciplinary program that includes a 15 bed inpatient unit, an ambulatory care component, a day hospital, and an ECT program. The programs mandate is to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment to individuals suffering from mood disorders, such as bipolar affective disorder and depression, and related mental health issues. Schizophrenia Treatment and Education Program (STEP) (PY3N) PY3N - Schizophrenia Treatment and Education Program - STEP has inpatient, outpatient and day hospital services. This program treats individuals with schizophrenia, schizoaffective and co-occurring disorders. There are 4 of 14 beds designated for co-occurring disorders, i.e., any mental disorder and addictions issue. Dual diagnosis capable - CODI initiative.,Mental Health Program,Eating Disorders Program (PY2) The Adult Eating Disorders program is a specialized treatment program for adults with a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa. The multidisciplinary team provides cognitive behaviorally oriented treatment in inpatient, day treatment and outpatient settings. The inpatient program is located on PY2. General Psychiatry Program (PY2) The General Psychiatry Program is a locked 25 bed inpatient unit that provides mental health services to patients who require specialized assessment, diagnosis, and short-term intervention. The program treats a wide range of mental illness utilizing a multidisciplinary treatment model.,Mental Health Program,Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PY3 S) Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit: An 11 bed locked unit providing secure care to mental health patients in crisis. Interventions consist of crisis management, assessment, and short-term treatment. Once patients are stabilized, they are transferred to other units or discharged to the community. S.T.A.T. Program S.T.A.T. provides timely, brief and intensive treatment for individuals who are in crisis or who otherwise require acute care in an ambulatory treatment setting. It also addresses the needs of an individual who is making a transition from hospital but continues to have acute treatment requirements due to ongoing psychosocial stressors, or residual psychiatric deficits. This care is provided in an intensive day hospital or outpatient format.,Mental Health Program,Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program Inpatient Services PY1 is a 14 bed unit which provides intensive psychiatric medical care to children and adolescents who present with psychiatric emergencies for the residents of Manitoba, and part of Nunavut. The staffing model consists of a multidisciplinary team and the admission focus is on acute psychiatric stabilization and diagnosis. The children are seen daily while they are admitted by a psychiatrist, and attend school, recreation and OT groups while in hospital. Consultation Liaison Service Psychiatric consultation, and treatment follow-up to children and adolescents and their families who have ongoing medical and surgical diseases with concurrent psychiatric problems. Outpatient Mental Health Services (OMHS) Functioning as the general outpatient service OHMS provides assessment and treatment for children, adolescents and their families. The teams are multidisciplinary, and provide a variety of short and long-term treatment modalities , medication and individual, family, and group psychotherapies. Eating Disorders Service The Eating Disorders Service provides assessment and continuum of care for children and adolescents with eating disorders. The treatment team is multidisciplinary, and patients can be treated in either a day hospital or outpatient setting. Family involvement is emphasized, with evening psycho-educational groups offered throughout the year. Collaboration with the pediatricians as an integral component, and when medically indicated inpatient admission to Childrens Hospital are arranged. Autism Service The Autism Service provides consultative and educational resources to, families, daycares, and schools for children and adolescents who have diagnoses that fall within the Autistic Spectrum Disorder . Service is based on a case management/consultative model, and includes collaboration with Children Special Services and the school system.,Mental Health Program,Child and Adolescent Acute Assessment Service (CAAAS) This multidisciplinary team provides urgent psychiatric consultations to children and adolescents. Patients are referred from the Emergency at Childrens Hospital, the inpatient services or centralized intake. Intensive Child and Adolescent Treatment Service (ICATS) This multidisciplinary team provides urgent biopsychosocial psychiatric treatment to children, adolescents and families of a time limited and focused nature. Patients are referred by CAAAS and the inpatient service. Centralized Intake Service Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program. This team of health clinicians provides an intake for parents/guardians who are attempting to access child and adolescent mental health services in the Winnipeg Region. Upon completion of the intake, patients are triaged to services according to the clinical presentation.,Surgical Program,GA5 A5 is a 28 bed neuroscience unit and it is the only unit in Manitoba responsible for neurosurgery patients. Included on A5 is an eight bed step-down unit where patients requiring advanced nursing and medical monitoring are placed. Advanced skills required in the step-down unit include endotracheal tube, ventriculostomy drain and arterial line management, and both intracranial pressure and EKG monitoring. GH3 A highly active 24 bed acute care unit, providing clinical expertise in the areas of gastrointestinal and genitourinary patient care management including a room for radiation oncology. In addition to the inpatient bed component of the unit, there are 6 short stay/over night beds for day surgery procedures.,GA3 A 26 bed acute vascular and thoracic surgical unit (18 ward beds and an 8 bed step-down unit) including patients undergoing lung transplantation. Telemetry monitoring on the ward and cardiac monitoring in the step-down unit is provided as required. The eight bed step-down unit facilitates the transfer of patients from the recovery room who require close monitoring and who have arterial lines and/or central lines. GD3 GD3 is the hub of the provincial trauma unit. Patients with a need for emergency surgery and eye, ear, nose and throat surgery are also located on this unit. Multi-system problems are common in this client population,Surgical Program,Operating Room A 13 theatre operating room suite providing perioperative care to patients undergoing major vascular surgery, complex thoracic surgery, complex general surgery, ENT/Oral surgery, tertiary urologic surgery, plastic surgery, and orthopedics. All neurosurgery for the province is done at this site. GD2 An acute 30 bed orthopedic unit providing care to orthopedic surgical & trauma patients. Surgical procedures common to the unit are complex total knee and hip procedures, spinal procedures including thoracic, lumbar and cervical procedures, and upper extremities procedures.
