We will first exammeine different types of writing for different purposes. In our daily life, we encounter two categories of writing:2. Writing for entertainment(such as novels, stories and poems3. Writing for information(formal or expository prose, such as research papers and newspaper reports)A informal writing, such as private journals, notes to friends, and personal letttersB. formal writing: such as letters of application, letters of inquiry, and business communication. Before aspiring to achieve fame or to pass exams, we should forst of all try to write to communicate. In real life, the major role of languange is to communicate rather than entertainment. I have therefore set communication as the target of this course.4. Some important factors in writing:1). Structural organization2). Originality/creativity3). Imagination4) Critical thinking 5).logical reasoning6). World or encyclopedic knowledge7). Sample paper studyExplicit Ideas Make Writing Easier (2nd Version 2)By JerryI used to ask myself why I couldnt produce one beautiful composition like the others did. With all my efforts put, the only results I could get from the teachers were always red-penciled corrections. Was writing really so difficult that it was already beyond me? If it was, why did I have to bother with such a hard nut? Some questions like those would often wander in my mind in the past, and I was so confused. As I was trying hard to get a way out, I had the chance to write an application for a scholarship; then I thought of the articles of incorporation in business and the agreements that the diplomatic officials had made. None of those things had too close relationshipsCould you explain this point a little bit more? with English writing;. Some reflections I have from this experience are like these: without writing, I couldnt get the scholarship to share the heavy economic burden that my parents had been taking for all these years; without writing correctly, a business company would very possibly face the consequence of biting the dust; and without writing well, a crucial war would be in store for two nations who maybe indeed wanted to patch the old relationship at heart but made a mistake in the an agreement. So I told myself, I couldnt give up. As English becomes an international language, it is not only a convenient tool for communicating with each other, but sometimes it could be a matter of life and death. Good writing makes you enjoy your life so freely, but a poor one writing would only get make you sad. So there was no reason to drop it away; I had to face it no matter how difficult it was before for me.Determination having been made, I began to put my heart and soul concentrating on writing with only one target that I had to, or must, write well, better, even best. But it didnt mean I could reach the expectation with only my enthusiasm, I must take some actions. First of all, I was supposed to hold a clear view about where the difficulty lied lay in my writing. Grammatical rules? Words choosing Word choice or sentence structure? I paid a great deal attention on to those things, for I deeply believed that only in such a way as using some big words could my article be genuinely colorful; even if it was only flowery language, it could also make my passage seem appear to be vivid and active. So I had to choose every word so accurately that someone else may never raise find a better one. Again and again, my passage was always questioned by some comments like “whats your main ideas in this passage?” or “this sentence really confused me!” Oh, my God! I felt so hard frustrated; I could hardly breathe. My passage turned out just a pile of beautiful words in spite of all my efforts, and I myself dont even make out what I really wanted to convey. Just as I frustrated probed in a fog, the teacher told me to pay more attention to the ideas of an article. Like a bar of burring coal, I felt so warm; and like bluster of white light in the darkness, I suddenly saw the road under my foot feet. Why didnt I think of it before? But anyway it was totally driven home to me that this pointpresenting my ideas so clearly as clearly as possible so as to be understood by as many people as possible otherswas the most difficult and important in the process of my writing. From then on I converted my focus to the ideas of my composition. To be frankly, I really tried hard. English was not my mother tongue after all, it followed that I had to turn my ideas exactly into another language I was not so familiar with. That required a kind of ability, to translate and organize the ideas in your mind to into expressive and fluent words on a piece of paper, to take on a convincing and smooth language before readers, making them feel like and enjoy reading your articles. This was really a big challenge, but I was already geared up to pick up the gauntlet. I used the simplest words to try to express the clearest ideas to all the readers without making point of putting any big words in it.Good reflection! Yes, writing was just everything deep in my heart, including all the pains and happiness. It should be just flooding along the tip of my fingers to the paper I had been working on, and it was. At that moment, I felt so easy and comfortable. It was so natural, I simply didnt want any affectation in it; and it was so real that I could felt feel every small word telling a moving story. I enjoy reading them, and I begin to like writing some other more more than before.Gradually I found teachers comments changed. “You have a good idea here!” or “your argumentation is really nice!” was often lingering on my pieces. Experiencing such training, I surprisingly found, as the ideas was were presented clearly both in my mind and on my paper, the punctuation and structure naturally became much better than before,Yes, it should be so. I could even make them all correct without paying any special attention. Even if I did make it something wrong, I could also get them applied better with the teachers instruction each time. That was a wonder, but I made it. I dare not deny that writing is really not as easy as we were talking about, but I have to say that the ideas one wants to convey through the article was were the key factor always taking a great impact on some other causes of writing difficulty. That is to say, if you crack the core nut of presenting your ideas in your writing, you are only a stone away from the success. The difficulty of writing is lying here in expressing ones ideas successfully and so explicit ideas make difficult writing much easier. That was a real truth, I should follow., and So should every one should.!作业讨论辅导 1. Topic for discussion: How to study this course well. 2. Standard English and nonstandar Englishl Five rules of good diction: Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched, dthe concrete to the abstract; the single word to the circumlocution; the short to the long; the Saxon word to the Romance. Some people are against these rules. l It is our suggestion that when a student learns to write in English, he starts with standard English, paying attention to the core of English vocabulary, use colloquial English in informal situations avoid slangs in formal writing.l standard English and nonstandard English :nowwheres, irregardless, aint , haint, I dont want nothing, he dont 2. The exact word1.Connotation and denotation: 1) synonyms1).connotation and denotation: the meaning of a word has two aspects, denotive and connotive. A words denotation is what is literally mears, as defined by the dictionary; its connotation is the feeling or idea suggested by the word.e.g. country, emphasizing the territory-an island country, china is the third largest country in the world nation ,-emphasizing the people- a peace-loving nation, the awakening nations state, emphasizine, the political organizaiton or government.-state- owned enterperizes land, a less pricise geographical term than the country, is oftern used to connote certain feelings- a land of libertythere is always a shade of difference in meaning between the synonyms. Generally speaking, the Latin word is more bookish than Early English and French.Early English small/little ask time rise French petite question age mountLatin diminutive interrogate epoch ascendSmall / little- they can be used interchangeably when refering to physical size, but little connotes a sense of charm, tenderness or pathosModest / humble-the former is a virtue, but the latter is not since it connotes undue self-depreciation. Propaganda / publication-the former is derogative.a resolute person: a person who is firm and determined in face of hardship and opposition;a stubborn person: a person who may be unreasonable and , therefore, very difficult to deal with.(3.12 Class One)2)derrogative terms and euphemismsEuphemism is a Greek word meaning good speech”: pass away; Fall asleep for die; to be expecting/ to be in the family way, for to be pregnant.2. Specific and concrete wordsThough good writing calls for/ requires general and abstract words as well as specific and concrete ones, it is the latter that make writing vivid, real and clear.A good man: kind, honest, just, generous, sympathetic, warm-hearted, selflessGood food: tasty, nourishing, rich, high-priced, freshLaugh: smile, grin, beam, giggle, titter(傻笑), snigger(暗笑、窃笑), chuckle( 轻声地笑), chortle(哈哈大笑)General- In spring, the weather in Beijing can be very bad.Specific-In spring, it is often windy and dusty in Beijing.More specific-In spring, the wind may blow all day long and the air is filled with dust, which sometimes may shut out the sun. There is no escape of fine dust. It gets into your eyes, your noses, and all the cars and buildings are covered with thick dust.3. Idioms and collocations: 1)idioms; 2) collocationsHow do you do eat ones words, rain cats and dogs/downpour,A strong in the wine/ a fish out of waterFamiliar with/capable ofAt length/ above allTurn down/ turn off/ put up withTake medicine or exam or a course, my family is small, I understand (deeply) fully that.; have a deeper understanding (3.12 Class Two) III. The Use of DictionaryIV. Sample Paper studyWhat Is Mirror-image Learning & How Can I Use It Efficiently in My Academic WritingBy Cameo“Oh, my God! Your face is dirty!” what is the first thing you will do when you hear these words? Of course, to find a mirror. and get the dirt off! We can see ourselves in two ways, from the others description and from the a mirror. Basically, the two ways are the same, because they both ask “image” for help. You give the image to the others, and then they reflect may send it back to you by adding some personal feelings if you want them to do so. It is an indirect way. As for the mirror, you can see yourself directly through in it. But it is also the an image. It depends on the different shapes of the mirror. You will never know what your real image is. So in other words, we can say that we know ourselves through in the “mirror”. Why do we need the a “mirror”? I think the “mirror” make us look perfect. I love beauty and I love the “mirror”. Because This is because if I want to become more beautiful, I must “see” myself, of course through the “mirror”. Otherwise, I cannot see myself, just judge myself through my feeling. I think it is a terrible thing. Our learning should use the same way, the mirror-image way. For example, if I was a movie star in Hollywood, what I would do first is to decorate one of my rooms with four- side mirror walls. Because I want to make myself look perfect, from the hair to the feet foot. You can imagine if you are living in a room full of the mirrors, you can see yourself every moment you are in the room, how can you bear fat, unsmooth skin, spots, whelk and other problems that will destroy your face and figure? This may sound horrible for a normal people, but in academic learning and writing, these four mirrors are necessary. Also like the movie stars, academic writing is a work that concerned by concerns the public, and it should have little few or no blemishes. This term is the fourth term or fifth term, if we include the summer class as well, for academic writing, it is the stage in which we must require ourselves professionally. I think we have burnished three “mirrors” during three terms study, the professors reflection, our classmates and the T.A.s reflections and our self-criticism criticize. The professors reflection is the first mirror. Professor Yang through his comments and encouragements lets us know ourselves. Then the peer-exchange reading gives us a channel platform to “show” ourselves in front of our classmates. This is a very effective way. Because we are friends and can point out the weak points without any restriction. Through this way I pushed most parts of my “heart door” (心门, how about 心扉?). The third is self-criticize self-criticism. We do some rewritings. Because we are in a higher step than when we were at the front door of academic writing. We can see the progress we have made, and have more new interpretation to a given topic. Now we need the fourth mirror. I think it is also a work what we should do by ourselves. It is standing on the academic position to view all the problems and put it into practice. We have the ability to write academic writing, but we are in lack of practice. Why we do research on this or that problem, what is its practical meaning? I think we need more guidance from Professor Yang. There is also a good example
