The young son became very happy seeing the sky filled with colorful kites. He asked his father to get him a kite and a thread(线)with a roller so he could fly a kite, too. So the father went to the shop at the park where the festival was being held and bought a kite and a roll of thread for his son. Then the son started to fly a kite. Soon, his kite was high up in the sky. After a while, the son said, “Dad, it seems that the thread is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we break it, the kite will be free and will go flying even higher. Can we break it?” The father said nothing and cut the thread from the roller. The kite started to go a little higher. That made the son very happy. But then, slowly, the kite started to come down. And soon it fell down and landed on the top of an unknown building. The young son was surprised to see this. He had cut the kite loose of its thread so it could fly higher, but instead, it fell down. He asked his father, “ Dad, I thought that after cutting the thread, the kite could freely fly higher. Why did it fall down?”The father explained, “ Dear son, at the height of the life that we live, we often think some things are tying us down and that they are preventing us from going any higher. The thread was not holding the kite from going higher, but it was helping it stay higher when the wind slowed down. And when the wind picked up again, you helped the kite go higher and in the proper direction through the thread. And when we cut the thread, the kite fell down without the support you were providing through the thread.”25Why did the son want to cut the thread of the kite?A To help the kite fly higher.B To get his fathers praise.C To watch the kite fall freely.D To see what would happen to the kite.26From the father, what do we know about the kite thread?A It controls the direction of the wind.B It makes people who fly kites happy.C It prevents the kite from flying higher.D It helps the kite stay higher.27Why didnt the father refuse the sons asking for cutting the thread at first?A Because he wanted to give his son a lesson. This new research may also help people who are learning a new language.Michael Ullman, a professor at Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C., is the lead researcher. He has been studying language learning for more than 20 years.Ullman, Phillip Hamrick ( another researcher) and the rest of the team looked at data from 16 other studies on language. They found that people learn language using two memory systems: declarative (陈述性的)and procedural (程序性的). Memorizing vocabulary, for example, is a declarative memory process. But learning grammar is, mostly, a procedural memory process.“Declarative memory, in humans at least, is what we think of as learning memory. Such as, Oh, I remember what you said last night or things like that. And procedural motor memory is what we often call motor memory, such as how you learn to ride a bicycle,” says Professor Ullman. These procedural memory skills become so deeply learned that we are no longer aware that we are doing them. However, Ullman explains that the two long-term memory systems can share tasks. And, he adds, the adult brain uses the systems to learn language a bit differently from the way a childs brain does it.“Adult learners of a second language tend to rely on learning the grammar in declarative memory early on. But finally, they become just like kids learning the grammar and they depend on procedural memory.”In other words, adult language learners may use their declarative memory for using grammar patterns. They think about it on purpose. For a child, the grammar may come more naturally. They dont have to think about the grammar rules before speaking. In a statement to reporters, Ullman said he hopes the new research “will lead to exciting advances in our understanding of language, and in how both second language learning and language problems can be improved.”28. What can we learn from the text?A. People learn a second language by using declarative memory. B. People learn their native language by using procedural memory.C. People learn vocabulary by using declarative memory. D. People lean grammar only by using procedural memory.29. According to the text, which of the following is an example of using procedural memory? A. Remembering others promises. B. Remembering the story you read in a book. C. Remembering what the teacher taught you. D. Remembering how to drive a car.30. What is the difference between adult language learners and children? A. Adults need to think about the grammar rules before speaking. B. Children dont have to learn the grammar while learning language. C. Adults learn the grammar in declarative memory all the time. D. Children cant learn how to use the grammar during communication.31. What is Michael Ullmans attitude to the research? A. Disappointed. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Indifferent. DWe all need to eat and sometimes we all eat last-minute meals alone. Actually, eating alone at home or at a restaurant can be a very satisfying experience. However, a recent study from South Korean researchers suggests that frequently eating alone may lead to poor eating habits and poor food choices. The study found that men who ate alone more than twice a week had a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and being overweight. For children, eating with their families is not only about preventing bad things happening, but it is also about developing good ones.Several studies have looked at the long-term, effects that eating with family members has on a child. Experts say that these studies do not seem to prove a cause-and-effect relationship. However, they do suggest a strong link.In 2016, a research team looked at research from nearly three quarters of the worlds countries. Among the findings was the fact that students who share a main meal with their families are less likely to skip classes. They are also less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol because they feel closer to their parents.Another study from the University of Montreal found that children who ate with their family members experienced long-term physical and mental (心理的)health benefits. Linda Pagani, one of the researchers, says, “These children were physically in better shape and drank fewer sugary soft drinks. These children also seemed to have better social skills.”If you find too many of your mealtimes to be lonely events, experts suggest making small changes. They suggest making room for at least one shared meal a week. And keep it simple. Even if dinner is a salad and a sandwich, it is still time for a family to be together. If mornings are less busy than evenings, start by making breakfast those in your social circle or neighborhood. Once a month, potluck dinners(聚餐)where everyone brings a dish could be an easy way to start. If you work in an office, step out with a co-worker for a bite to eat every once in a while, instead of eating at your desk every day.32What might happen if a man always eats meals alone?A. He may develop good eating habits.B. He may have a poorer dining experience.C. He is more likely to become overweight.D. HE will tend to achieve future success easily.33What can we conclude from the 2016 research?A. Students eating with their family have a closer relationship with them. B. Three quarters of students in the study shared a meal with their parents. C. Students who skip classes might refuse to eat with their family. D. It proves a cause-and-effect relationship between eating with family and health.34According to Linda Pagani, what is the benefit of children eating with family?A. They might be able to keep in shape more easily. B. They might prefer sugary soft drinks. C. They might have a more developed brain. D. They might be better at social communication.35What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. How to get out of the habit of eating alone. B. What people should do to eat healthily.C. Reasons why people should change their eating habits. D.
