Gout is characterized by these sudden and often severe bouts of pain, redness, and inflammation in one of the joints. The most common joint which is afflicted with gout is the big toe, but this condition can affect other areas depending on the the individual. Unfortunately, about 50% of gout patients will experience at least one other attack of gout. Some of these people may develop chronic gout which can cause significant joint damage and loss of motion in the joints.Avoiding PurinesCurrent research has shown that these bouts with gout can be strongly affected by the diet of the individual. What medical researchers have found is that there are some foods that have a naturally high amount of a chemical known as purines in them. When these purines are ingested, the body starts to break down these chemicals and produces uric acid. This uric acid can accumulate in the synovial fluid that surrounds the joints, then uric acid crystals will start to form. These crystals are quite similar to small sharp needles which will cause the joints to swell and become painfully inflamed. Thus causing an excruciating gout attack which could have you sidelined for a few days.Following a Gout DiagnosisSo, once a person has been diagnosed with gout, their doctor will strongly recommend that they make some dietary changes in their lives immediately. This may be the time where a newly diagnosed gout patient may want to know what sort of foods would be good for them? Fortunately, with recent advancements in gout medication, patients no longer need to stick to the severe dietary restrictions that were once required. In fact, these old dietary restrictions proved to be quite difficult to stick to, even with the possibility of another attack.Nowadays, the current good gout diet is in many ways quite similar to the healthy diet that would be suggested for most people. By sticking to this healthy gout diet, your actually doing a lot more for yourself than justmanaging your condition. In fact, research has shown that obesity can be a serious risk factor for gout. So following this diet can help you to maintain a healthier weight, as well as avoid several other chronic diseases! This gout diet works by helping to control the production and effective elimination of uric acid in the body. So, by sticking to this diet, gout patients may be able to prevent future attacks or at least reduce their intensity. The Healthy Gout DietThis diet will effectively reduce the amount of purines that a gout patient ingests, thus lowering the amount of uric acid in the body. Also, this gout diet can help overweight patients lose the extra pounds, which will also help lower the risk of future gout attacks. On the other end of the spectrum, gout patients should avoid any rapid weight loss as this can also induce another flare-up. Doctors will also recommend that gout patientsremember to drink plenty of liquids, as this will help to purge extra uric acid from the body.Whats on the Menu?Lower Meat & Fish Intake:First off, proteins from animals are naturally high in purines. So, gout patients will need to severly limit the amount of red meat ( beef, pork, lamb, etc. ), seafood (shrimp, lobster, tuna, etc.), fatty fish, organ meats, or anchovies that they eat. Doctors recommend that daily intake of these foods should be limited to 4 to 6 ounces (or 113 to 170 grams) daily.Alcohol Consumption:Gout patients need to limit or completely avoid the consumption of alcohol depending on the severity of their condition. Alcohol actually interferes with the effective elimination of uric acid from the body. Beer has been highly linked with gout flare-ups. If you arent experiencing a gout flare-up, then drinking one or two 5-ounce (or about 148 milliliter) servings of wine a day should not increase your risk of flare-up.Plant-Based Protein:For gout patients, the best way to get their protein is through plant-based sources. Plant foods, like beans and legumes, can provide an excellent source of daily protein. Plus, eating more of these foods will help gout patients to effectively cut down on their saturated fat content. This can prove to be very beneficial in maintaining a healthier weight for gout.Low-Fat Dairy Products:Current Research has shown that low-fat or fat-free dairy intake can reduce the risk of a gout flare-up. It is recommended that gout patients get 16 to 24 fluid ounces (473 to 710 milliliters) of daily dairy intake.Complex Carbohydrates:Gout patients should avoid eating too much refined carbohydrates (white bread, candy, and cakes). Doctors recommend more whole grains, cereals, pasta, rice, vegetables, and fruits.Lots of Fluids:Be sure to drink plenty of fruit juices and purified water. Doctors recommend at least 8 glasses of water a day!Other Beverages:There is some evidence to suggest that drinking four to six cups of coffee per day can actually lower the risk of gout in men. Either way, on a gout diet, you can drink coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages.Cherries:Recent studies have shown that eating cherries or drinking cherry juice can help to lower the risk of a gout flare-up in some patients. Medical researchers have concluded that anthocyanins (antioxidant pigments which can be found in fruits and vegetables which are red or purplish) are responsible for the beneficial effect on gout symptoms. These antioxidants can stabilize these molecules called free radicals. Free radicals, when left unstable, can cause inflammation and damage tissue and cells. Gout diet: Whats allowed, whats notA sample menu from Mayo Clinic Heres a look at what you might eat during a typical day
