翻译:行道树张晓风 (附注解)Translation: Roadside Trees (translated by alexcwlin/edited by adam.L)(with explanatory notes)每天,每天,我都看见它们,它们是已经生了根的在一片不适于生根的土地上。Day in day out I saw them. They had taken root at a place which was unsuitable for roots to grow.*有一天,一个炎热而忧郁的下午,我沿着人行道走着,在穿梭的人群中,听自己寂寞的足音,我又看到它们,忽然,我发现,在树的世界里,也有那样完整的语言。One day on a sweltering (1) and gloomy afternoon I was walking along the sidewalk. While listening to my own lonesome footsteps amidst the bustling crowd, I saw them again. Suddenly I realized in the world of trees there was such a complete set of language. I stood there quietly trying to comprehend the story they were telling (2):*我们是一列树,立在城市的飞尘里。“We are a row of tree standing in the middle of hovering (3) dust in the city.*许多朋友都说我们是不该站在这里的,其实这一点,我们知道得比谁都清楚。Many of our friends have been saying we shouldnt be standing here. Actually on this particular point, we know better than anyone else. Our home is up the mountain in a virgin (4) forest with such dense growth that no sunlight can filter through. Yet we have elected to stand here in hardship on a two-lane city street, and we have no one to blame but ourselves (5). Our friends are absorbing dews and enjoying cool under shade of clouds in the mountain, but then how about us? Our only ornament is just what you see a body full of stuck-on (6) soot.*是的,我们的命运被安排定了,在这个充满车辆与烟囱的工业城里,我们的存在只是一种悲凉的点缀。Yes, our destiny has been set. In the great theme (7) of this industrial city filled with automobiles and chimney-stacked factories, our existence is only a pathetic adornment. But you can spare your sympathy, because this seemingly fate-dictated situation is the result of our free choice. Otherwise we would not be diligent in sprouting leaves in springtime and offering thick shades in summertime. All good deeds require sacrifices (8), but only this type of sacrifices gives us a profound purpose in life.*当夜来的时候,整个城市都是繁弦急管,都是红灯绿酒。When night comes, the whole city is alive with bouncing music, flashing neon-lights, and bubbling wine. But we stay in quietness, darkness and loneliness for reasons which nobody can understand. We keep a stiff upper lip until the dawning clouds emerge from the horizon like a rising flag and we stand in a row to give our salute. No matter what, someone from our city has to show up to welcome the sun. If no others are extending their greeting, we will take it upon us to hail brightness with open arms. At this time maybe an early-riser child would come by and greedily suck in the clean fresh air, and this would be our proudest moment. Yes, maybe all people have been used to pollution for a long time, but we will stubbornly persist to manufacture the much ignored freshness.*落雨的时分也许是我们最快乐的,雨水为我们带来故人的消息,在想象中又将我们带回那无忧的故林。Perhaps rainfall is our happiest time. Rain brings news on our old friends and carries our imagination back to our worry-free home the forest. We cry in the rain. We always love our lives there, although we have given them up.*立在城市的飞尘里,我们是一列忧愁而又快乐的树。Standing in a city with ubiquitous dust, we are a row of worried and happy trees.”*故事说完了,四下寂然,一则既没有情节也没有穿插的故事,可是,我听到了它们深深的叹息。 The story was told and then it was quiet all around. It was a story without a plot or subplot. But I heard they let out a deep sigh, and I knew at least the story touched a chord in them. Then I heard another deeper sigh, and I knew that was mine.*备注:(1) 一般用的是 “hot”; “sweltering” 是不舒适地热, 我应为比较适合。
