Unfortunately for him, he was leaving his fingerprints on the ticket machine. But, this was not his only problem. While he was trying to help the customer, a camera was recording him for about 5 minutes before he apologized to the customer and said that the machine was not working. After the customer left, the robber put his gloves and mask back on, took the money and left. The day after the tape was shown on TV, the phones at the police station didnt stop ringing. A study showed this to be untrue. In this study, Seeing is Believing: What Do Boys Do When They Find a Real Gun?, a group of 29 boys aged 8-12 years were observed in a room where a gun was hidden. Many of the children found and handled the gun, and half of the children actually pulled the trigger. Most of the children, who handled the hidden gun and pulled the trigger, had previously received gun safety education. This study helps to prove that to keep your children safe and prevent firearm-related injuries, it is important to keep them away from guns, either by not having a gun in the home or by storing it properly. Questions 1. What wrong idea did most parents have? 2. How old were the boys in the study? 3. How many children really pulled the trigger? 4. What does the study prove? 5. What way is suggested to stop gun-related injuries?Recording 3 15 C,B,D,A,DTranscript:Susan had always feared guns, never wanted a gun and argued with her husband, Mike, not to keep guns in their home. One night, while Mike slept, Susan sat on the sofa watching television and waited for their 18-year-old son to arrive home from a friends house, where he had been playing video games. At about 12:40, Susan heard a noise at the door. She thought it was her son so she walked to the door. Suddenly, two masked men burst into the house waving guns. One of them ordered Susan to lie down, but she ran back to the bedroom, where she woke her husband and tried to hold the door shut. As Mike fought with the two robbers, Susan grabbed her husbands gun and shot at the robbers. The shots ended one robbers life. The other robber escaped but was soon caught. Questions 1. What was Susans attitude toward guns? 2. Where was their son when the robbery took place? 3. How did the robbers get into the house? 4. What was Susans first response to the two robbers? 5. What happened to the two robbers in the end?Recording 4 15 D, C, C ,A, CTranscript:A man walked into a small corner restaurant in Michigan at 12:50. Seeing no guests there, he quickly pulled out a gun and pointed it at the only clerk behind the counter. Give me all the cash! he demanded. However, the clerk turned him down because he said he couldnt open the cash register without a food order. Only the number for each food will do it, he explained. Sandwich, shouted the man impatiently. Sorry, sir, the clerk said, they arent offered for lunch. After a while, more impatiently, the man barked hamburger. Sorry, sir, the clerk answered, we dont offer fast food. The clerk was expecting the gunman to ask for another food but the man was so annoyed that he walked away, leaving the clerk so shocked that he was speechless. Questions 1. What time did the story happen? 2. Why didnt the clerk give the robber the money? 3. What do we know about the robber? 4. What did the man order at his second try? 5. What happened in the end?Recording 5 15 C, D, A, C, DTranscript:It was October 1991, when an unemployed seaman drove his pickup truck into a cafeteria in Texas, leaped out, and opened fire.
