Everyday, another scandal of a politician taking bribes and CEOs forcing employees to work in dangerous conditions is uncovered. These occurrences are now so frequent that the public has become jaded (tired) to such information, to the extent that we generally believe that people will do anything to succeed. However, certain generous, caring, and inspiring individuals prove that conscience can be an equally powerful motivator as money, fame and power.,At times, altruism and love are stronger motivators than success and money. Betty Anne Waters, whose story was turned into the 2010 movie, “Conviction,” dedicated almost nineteen years of her life to proving her brother, Kenneth, innocent of murder. At the time, Kenneth was wrongly convicted of murdering a woman, but because DNA evidence was not used in his trial, Mr. Waters was ultimately imprisoned. However, Betty Ann continued to search for evidence and dig deeper even after it seemed as if there was no hope left. Even though she was a single mother with two young boys, Ms.Waters managed to earn a law degree in Rhode Island while waitressing to support her family. Her legal education was entirely for Kenneth, who she then represented in court and went on to use DNA evidence to clear his name. Upon Kenneths acquittal, Betty Anne returned to waitressing at the small dinner where she had worked through law school. She continues to work there today, despite having had a movie made for her, and still dedicate experience and time to acquitting other innocent prisoners. Ms. Waters is living proof of the drive to live simply, motivated by love for family, not for fame and recognition.,Even businessmen, who are often thought of as greedy and profit-driven, at times are tremendously generous and altruistic. Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream is one such company that exemplifies an environmentally and socially conscious ideal. For example, since the 1980s, the company has established a foundation called the Ben and Jerry Foundation to finance community-building projects, and provided the Foundation with 7.5% of its pretax profits. In addition to their charitable donations, the company has also switched to eco-friendly production methods. In 2001, B&J began solely using paper materials to package ice cream. Finally, the companys famous annual “Free Cone Day” also is a way to spread cheer and enjoyment to all, free of charge. The spirit of giving and sustaining community proves that not all companies are solely driven by profits. Some are equally motivated by the desire to improve society and sustainability through products and charity.,Thus, despite the overwhelming pervasion of bribery, materialism, and immorality in front-page news today, there are many instances of goodness and benevolence. We must not begin to believe that money, fame, and power make the world go around; such assumptions are unfair to humanity at large, and fail to account for individuals such as Betty Anne Waters and companies l
