TOP STORIES*Judge Clarifies Microsoft Injunction (02/19/99, 8:16 p.m. ET)By Shawn Willett, Computer Reseller News A judges clarification of a preliminary injunction against Microsofts use of Java technology seems to be a partial victory for Microsoft, but leaves plenty of room for Sun Microsystems to press its case. Judge Whyte of the U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., ruled the original restraining order does not apply to Java technology that is not part of the Java Virtual Machine, which Microsoft licensed from Sun. The court clarified that its preliminary injunction does not restrict Microsofts distribution of any Java technology that makes no use of and is not derived from any of Suns copyrighted material, said the order, which was made public Friday. The arguments and evidence submitted in connection with Suns previously filed motions, without more, are insufficient to support an injunction. /wire/story/msftdoj/TWB19990219S0026?Is=twb_txtE-Book Poised To Eclipse 10,000 Units Sold (02/19/99, 8:06 p.m. ET)By Mo Krochmal, TechWeb NEW YORK - NuvoMedia expects to have sold over 10,000 of its Rocket eBook readers within the first six months it has been available, a company executive said this week. AWARENESS (Kismet)*In the previous issue of HELTRUN s newsletter, we have made a brief presentation of Kismet, an accompanying measure to the Electronic Commerce theme within the ESPRIT programme of DG III (May 1998 - April 1999). The acronym stands for Knowledge Information Society for SMEs and Electronic Trade. Kismet identifies the significant role of intermediaries and policy makers in promoting new business practices to the SME community and thus provide them with useful material and services that make their promotion activities more effective and widely accessible.A. What achievements have been made so far?v KISMET promotional web siteA Kismet promotional web site has been established and incorporates not only information about the project, but also a database that collects information regarding Promoters of E-Commerce, SMEs, Dissemination Activities and E-Commerce Links. The Kismet promotional web site can be found at: v “Virtual Center of Competence”Kismet will add value to the European, national, local and regional initiatives seeking to engage SMEs with the Information Society, through its “Virtual Center of Competence” (VCC). This network is divided in three main sub-networks that each of them provides different services according to the users type: “Virtual Workplace”, a mechanism for locating and exchanging experience between the kismet partners, “Virtual Knowledge Center” (VKC), which provides access to a range of existing awareness materials to organizations involved in promoting electronic commerce to SMEs, Virtual MarketPlace, which provides a range of value added services to VCC visitors, members and project partners (reception, help center, learning space etc). The web address for the “Virtual Center of Competence” is: http:/www.noesis.se/beta/kismetv Awareness DatabaseOne of the Kismets objectives is the evaluation of the material offered to SMEs by modern E-Commerce Institutes. For the collection of all these information, Kismet partners have built and filled an inventory containing actions and means used for promoting electronic commerce e.g. presentations, publications, conferences, exhibitions, web sites etc. For this purpose, a shared database has been established at: /db/login.aspv Evaluation Guidelines for the selected materialKismet is emphasizing on the appropriateness of the selected material for its target groups and especially for SMEs, which constitute the end users of electronic commerce. A small panel of SMEs from each partner Member State will utilize the developed Inventory and Web services to undertake an analysis and assessment of any initiative or material addressed to SMEs. For the time being, there has been a definition of the evaluation guidelines that should be followed for the evaluation of the stored awareness material, according to its type; text based material or presentation oriented material or computer programs or web sites. B. Cooperation with other E-Commerce initiativesKismet is co-operating with two other Esprit projects: v “WeCAN, in building an inventory of awareness events and means used for the promotion of E-Commerce to the partners audience.v KITE, in building an international catalogue of SME-related electronic commerce best business cases. C. Future Outcomesv A “Virtual Center of Competence” with additional and more accurate information about E-Commerce.v A sufficient mechanism for accessing information about E-Commerce in order to support SMEs in understanding and practicing E-Commerce.v An infrastructure (tools, methods etc) to provide structured information, with specific guidelines for SMEs in order to gain in-depth knowledge about E-Commerce issues.v A container of training material to be used mainly by intermediaries or policy makers in spreading E-Commerce to the wider SME community. *3. The Indianapolis, Ind.-based start-up lets customers engage all the services of a bank via the Internet, rather than through proprietary software or closed networks. Online banks appeal to a small niche of users, said Bill Doyle, an analyst with Forrester Research of Cambridge, Mass. The vast majority of Internet users want face-to-face contact, he said. These pure Internet plays are not going to succeed as long as they lack physical branches and dont have support available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The game is going to be won by the big banks with strong brands and the confidence to sell others stuff. /wire/story/TWB19990223S0007?Is=twb_text*9.
