Stress on social, economic, religious, cultural, artistic, intellectual and institutional tendencies.課程目標：歐洲中世紀文明的形成與進展可分為三部份來探討。第一部份為歐洲中世紀初期（The Early Middle Ages, ca. 300CE至1050CE），討論羅馬帝國後期的變動與歐洲中世紀文明的誕生，以及西方基督教文明與基督教世界（Christendom）的興起。第二部份為歐洲中世紀盛期（The High Middle Ages, ca. 1050CE至1300CE），探討中世紀文化的盛世，重點包括社會與經濟的變遷，家庭結構及婦女的生活方式，領土的擴張，宗教生活的深根與廣佈，教皇與帝國之間的抗爭，英法兩國政體的演變，以及文學、藝術、思想和法律的發展。第三部份為歐洲中世紀末期（The Later Middle Ages, ca. 1300CE至1500CE），探究歐洲過渡到近古時期所面臨的試煉，如宗教價值與信念的衰退，異端的湧現，邊緣階級（marginal or minority groups）如異端、猶太人、女巫、娼妓、同性戀及痲瘋病患者的社會地位，經濟的不景氣，連年的戰爭與叛亂，以及社會的動盪。指定教科書及史料閱讀：Required Texts and Readings1.
