Anyone who has had either a brother, a sister, or both will know a little bit about sibling_rivalry. Sibling rivalry does not necessarily stem fromthe desire to be the “favorite” among ones parents. In fact, sibling rivalry can also be attributed to a sort of natural competition that arises between people, especially those living close to one another.Already, childhood describes and shapes the development of the relationships between siblings. So that type of hostile relationship may not continue throughout the siblings lives. This observation is apparent in many sibling relationships, even my own. Yet, what can explain the change that happens?Perhaps, it has something to do with maturity.Maturity focuses on ones relationships, even those between siblings. Whether or not maturity directly accomplishes the creation of friendly terms between siblings is not entirely clear, but it is apparent that maturity helps to explain why siblings take focus away from creating antagonism(对立) and instead direct it towards community. If the old saying, “Blood is thicker than water”, is applied to sibling relationships, we find that genetic relationships can enhance social relationships. So, even if we want sibling relationships to be peaceful and loving, we cannot expect those friendly terms to exist always. What is important in this type of relationship is the concept of forgiveness. Forgiveness can heal any wound, and in the case of sibling relationships, it can be the path to a life of togetherness and solidarity. Therefore, it is entirely true that we cannot pick and choose who is in our family. But, we can learn to live together peaceably despite our differences. This not only applies to sibling relationships, but to all relationships in general. 1The underlined phrase “sibling rivalry” in Paragraph 1 probably means_.A. siblings compete for more love from their parentsB. parents can hardly treat their children equallyC. people would like to live close to one anotherD. students work hard together at their lessons答案:A词义猜测题。 2. According to the author, the relationships between siblings will become_.A. more difficult to deal withB. more and more importantC. worse and worseD. better and better答案:D细节理解题。 3It can be inferred from the third paragraph that maturity _.A. is helpful in helping keep good sibling relationshipsB. will push the social relationship forwardC. can create antagonism between siblingsD. may prove blood is thicker than water答案:A推理判断题。 4Which of the following can lead to a peaceful and solid life?A. The concept of determination.B. The quality of forgiveness.C. The friendly relationships.D. The spirit of bravery. B If you were sitting outside on April 16 in eastern North America, you may have seen a wonderful site. That day, millions of Red Admiral butterflies flew inor perhaps “blew in”from the southern United States. Drew Monkman is a local naturalist and writer, living in Peterborough, Ontario. He tracks the habits of animals including butterflies. He said that the migration was completely unprecedented . “They never have been seen in these kinds of numbers,” he said. “On that day there were probably several million butterflies, most of them Red Admiral, but there were other species as well.”Why did this happen? “This year in the southern United States like Texas, where the butterflies began their journey, the winter was amazingly mild,”said Monkman.“This allowed more butterflies to survive the winter and reproduce. And then, the winds blew out of the south and the butterflies rode them (across the Great Lakes and) into Ontario. ”He said, “The mild conditions are probably related, unfortunately, to climate changeat least indirectly.” In other words, global warming likely contributed to the warmer temperatures. Not only did the mild winter allow the butterflies to thrive, but it meant that more of their favorite plants thrived as well. Each species of butterfly lays its eggs on a specific plant. The Red Admiral lays its eggs on the nettle. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants. And the Swallowtale butterfly lays its eggs on fennel or dill plants. Butterflies also need plants for nectar. The huge stream of butterflies was seen through Ontario and into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. “People were typically seeing dozens in their backyards,” said Monkman. He also said some people told him they pulled off the highway to avoid hitting the butterflies with their cars.“There was another flight of butterflies in May,” said Monkman “It wasnt quite as large, but it was still very impressive.” 5According to Drew Monkman in Paragraph 2,_.A. the animals often moved here and thereB. many butterflies disappeared all of a suddenC. people should try to protect the butterfliesD. the number of the butterflies was very large答案:D推理判断题。 6The butterflies flew to live in eastern North America probably because_.A. it was too warm in TexasB. the winds blew from the south C. they would give birth to babiesD. they suffered from the cold weather答案:B细节理解题。 7What is the main idea of the fifth paragraph?A. Butterflies reproduced a great deal in winter.B. Butterflies live on all kinds of special plants.C. Its better for us to travel to America in the winter.D. The plants grew well in the southern United States. One morning, I was waiting at the bus stop, worried about _1_ (be) late for school.
