14 Unit 4 Astronomy the science of the stars . 阅读理解(2017四川广元二模)The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days ago, my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine. I was amazed. The sad truth is, great talent is not enough.I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than 100,000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase, “They are one skill away from great wealth.”There is an old saying that goes, “Job means just over broke(破产)”. And unfortunately, I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live_within_their_means”. They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonalds? ”almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask, “So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonalds makes more money than you? ”The answer is obvious:McDonalds is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on bui1ding a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.1. The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that _A. he has a sharp sense of hearingB. he is ready to help othersC. he is just one of the talented peopleD. he knows little about car repairing2. The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by “_”A. spend more than they can affordB. do in their own wayC. live in their own circleD. live within what they earn3. Why do talented people earn so little according to the author? A. They lack financial intelligence.B. They dont work hard enough.C. They dont make full use of their talents.D. They have no specialized skills.4. The main purpose of the author is to tell us _A. how young people can find a satisfactory jobB. what schools should teach studentsC. how McDonalds makes much moneyD. why so many talented people are poor答案与解析【文章大意】本文叙述了许多有才华的人却挣得很少的原因。 根据第一段的“The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.” 根据第三段的“They work and they pay the bills.” 根据最后一段的“They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.” 根据第二段的“I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.” (2017银川长庆高三模拟)As the labor market becomes more attractive, more companies are sending their employees to school. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is the latest company to use tuition assistance for employeeswhich for decades has been a part of many business benefits packagesas part of a renewed effort to bring in and cultivate talent. And while the impact of such programs has yet to be fully assessed, many see it as a positivealthough gradualmovement.“For workers, it gives them a better opportunity for development,”says Colleen Flaherty Manchester, a professor. “For firms, they are able to recruit the type of employees who have value education and are less likely to turn over, and thus have a higher level of retention(保留)”In all, 56 percent of US organizations offer undergraduate educational assistance while 52 percent offer graduate assistance.Largely driving the trend are Millennials, who happen to be the fastestgrowing people in the US workforce today and to whom the idea of tuition support from employers is especially appealing. Nearly 60 percent of Millennials surveyed said they would choose a job with strong professionaldevelopment potential over one with regular pay raises. Employers are absolutely adapting to Millennials in the workplace. They recognize that they need more experience, more knowledge, more mentoring to be successful. And theyre asking for itOf more than 140,000 Starbucks employees, only about 4,000 have signed up for the companys College Achievement Plan. What the longterm effects such programs might have for companies retention and turnover rates remain unclear. But, the pluses of these programs are more important than the minuses. Were going to see a lot more of this in the future.5. Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly._1_For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals (彩排) encourage this by running through the lines or having a “read through”. By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.Listen to your cast members.Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. _2_ This will help the actor learn his lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbed._3_Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the plays dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene (剧情). Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. _4_ Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members(参演人员), and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.Think positively and dont panic. Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, dont freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again. _5_A. Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times.B. Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.C. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.D. Read lines loud and remember them in a short time.E. Read lines loud and repeat them.F. Practice makes perfect.G. Record your lines. 1. 答案E解析根据本段第二句“To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again.” 所以E项“Read lines loud and repeat them.” 2. 答案A解析根据前一句“Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line.” 故选A项。3. 答案G解析根据本段第二句“They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene .” 4. 答案B解析根据横线前一句“Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own.” 5. 答案C解析根据横线前一句“If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again.” C项“Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization有时候尴尬是最优秀的记忆方法”与上下文一致。.
