His birthday February 12th is now the statutory anniversary of the United,Lincolns Birthday February 12th,States. On Lincolns Birthday, people will always hold lectures, publish commemorate (庆祝) article to remember Lincoln.,Valentines Day,February 14. Celebrated in memory of St. Valentine. This holiday is highly commercialized(商业化的). Lovers express their feelings by exchanging gifts, flowers, and greeting cards. In principle, a Valentine can be for anyone you care about, not just a lover or boyfriend. In practice, though, it is limited to lovers and spouses.,Presidents Day (Washingtons Birthday),The third Monday in February. It is a federal holiday. Celebrated to honor the United States presidents. George Washingtons birthday: February 22. Abraham Lincolns birthday: February 12. Many stores have major sales on this day.,St. Patrick Day 圣帕特里克节,March 17th. Primarily celebrated by people with Irish background. Many people wear green clothes and other items on this day.,April Fools Day,April 1st. This is not really a holiday. People play lighthearted(快乐的) tricks on each other during this day. However, be careful not to play tricks that may be harmful or cause injuries to anyone. It is supposed to be innocent(天真的) fun.,Easter,It is celebrated to commemorate the resurrection (复活)of Jesus Christ. Christians believe it occurred on the third day after Jesus crucifixion(苦难). People paint Easter eggs with bright colors. Many places organize egg hunts for kids. Egg hunts essentially (本质上)involve hunting for hidden plastic eggs that contain candy.,Mothers Day,Second Sunday in May. On Mothers Day morning some American children follow the tradition of serving their mothers breakfast in bed. Other children will give their mothers gifts which they have made themselves or bought in stores. Adults give their mothers red carnations(康乃馨), the official Mothers Day flower.,Fathers Day,The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.,Memorial Day阵亡将士纪念日,Last Monday in May. It is a federal holiday. It is the first major holiday in the year after New Years Day. In many northern states, swimming pools open on Memorial(纪念碑) Day. (Before that, it is too cold to swim.) Memorial Day commemorates Americans who fought for the country and died in wars.,Independence Day,July 4th. It is a federal holiday. The USA declared its independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776. It is a very important day in the history of the U.S. There are grand fireworks displays in many places this night. These fireworks(烟火) are very beautiful. Several other activities take place this day, like parades, community/family picnics, parties, or softball (垒球)games.,Labor Day 劳动节,First Monday in September. It is a federal holiday. In many northern states, swimming pools are closed on Labor Day. Labor Day commemorates the American working tradition. Many people travel on this long weekend. It is generally the last holiday before it gets cold in most parts of the country.,Columbus Day,Second Monday in October. It is a federal holiday. It celebrates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492.,Halloween,October 31. It is not a holiday, but rather a festival. After it gets dark, children walk through neighborhoods asking for candy. Children are often dressed in scary costumes, such as a witch or a ghost, or costumes like fairies, cartoon characters, or whatever the latest craze is.,Thanksgiving Day,Thanksgiving became a holiday almost 400 years ago, in 1621. The holiday originated(起源于) in Massachusetts when the pilgrims(朝圣者) arrived and settled in 1620. They were greeted by the Iroquois Indians and one year later they had a Thanksgiving Feast.,Thanksgiving Celebration,On Thanksgiving families get together and have a big harvest feast! They eat turkey, corn, stuffing(填充物), potatoes, cornucopias(羊角), pumpkin pie, and crops. Everyone gets a BIG stomach ache!,Christmas,December 25. It is a federal holiday. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. As the majority of the U.S. population is Christian, this is the biggest festival of the year. Many people purchase an evergreen tree, and decorate it with lights, ornaments(装饰物), and tinsel(华而不实的东西).
