,Lesson Two Two Kinds,by Amy Tan,The Author,Amy Tan,譚恩美,an American writer of Chinese descent whose works explore mother-daughter relationships born February 19, 1952 In 1993, Tans adaptation of her most popular fiction work, The Joy Luck Club (1989), became a commercially successful film.,Fiction, Plot and More,Fiction: a literary work based on the imagination and not necessarily on fact Plot: the story that is told in a novel or play or movie etc., which is the deliberately arranged sequence of interrelated events that constitute the basic narrative structure of a novel or short story,Conflict,Usually a plot starts from a significant conflict. This conflict sets the plot of a story in motion. It (a) retains the readers attention, (b) builds the suspense of the work, and (c) arouses expectation for the coming events.,Structure of a plot,Beginning Middle End,Exposition (阐释说明) Rising action (情节升高) Crisis(Climax) (高潮) Falling action (情节转弱) Resolution (尾声),Essential Questions,Do parents always know whats right for their children? Library Work,The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tans first and most successful novel. The book comprises a series of short- story- like vignettes that move back and forth in time and space, between the lives of four Chinese women in pre-1949 China and their American- born daughter in California. It tells stories about four pairs of mothers and daughters- Suyuan Woo and Jing-mei(June);,III. Library Work,Anmei Hsu and Rose; Lindo Jong and Waverly; Ying-ying St. Clair and Lena. These stories are told by seven voices, those of the mothers and daughters except for Suyuan Woo, who is dead when the story begins in the book. The different points of view enable the reader to look at the bittersweet mother-daughter relations from different angles.,IV. Organization of the Text,Part I.
