wrotethenewspaper.Forexample,inSinglish,youcaneasilyrecognizeinfluencesfromChinese,includingvocabularysuchas “meesiam” and “dabao”.Sentencestructureslike “toiletwhere” insteadof “wheresthetoilet” alsocomefromChinese.Interestinganddiverseasitmayseem,thetrendforSinglishisworryingSingaporesgovernment.ItisconcernedthatthedialectisloweringthecountrysEnglishstandardandmayaffectitsrelationshipwithvisitors.ItevenstartedtheSpeakGoodEnglishMovement.Unfortunately,theproblemisnotsolved.Instead,Singlishhasboomed,especiallyamongyoungpeoplewhothinkofitasasignofbeingcoolandawayofidentifyingthemselvesasaSingaporean.ButthisdoesnotmeanthatstandardEnglishisbeingabandonedbyyoungpeople.Infact,theyaremuchmorecapablethanthegovernmentgivescredittheycanspeakboth.“Weareanationgoodatcodeswitchingweknowthatthewaywespeaktofriendsordriversmustbedifferentfromhowweactatworkorschool,” wroteCheryl,aSingaporeanauthor,inTimemagazine.
