Tradition has it that Leonardo da Vinci worked for ten years upon the painting; the monks in the church were annoyed at the delay. It was said that Leonardo often painted continuously from dawn to night without eating his meals. But at other times he spent hours before the picture, lost in contemplation,_examining, comparing, and measuring his figures. This inactivity aroused the anger of the fussy Prior, the head of the church, who belonged to the large group of those who believed that the busier a man seems, the more he accomplishes; and so he tried to findfaultwith the idle painter. Leonardo was slightly unhappy and explained to somebody else that there is a great difference between the work of the creative artist and the stonemason (石匠). The creative artist needs time for contemplation; he may be busiest when his hands are idlest. Just now he needed two heads to complete the picture: that of Christ, for which no model on earth could be found, for where was the man to be found whose face would express the strength, and beauty, and tenderness, and deep sorrow of the Christ; then he also needed a head of Judas, and that was hard to find as well, for where was the man whose face could express the meanness of that base traitor. But he would look no further; if none camehisway, he would be satisfied to take Prior as a model for Judas. This threat silenced the angry Prior, who quite naturally had no desire to pass to descendants in such a fashion.1Why did the Prior complain about the delay?ABecause he thought that the painter idled most of the hours.BBecause he knew that genius might be busiest when seemingly idlest.CBecause he liked the work of a stonemason.DBecause he was eager to be taken as a model for Judas. 根据文章第二段中的“. who believed that the busier a man seems, the more he accomplishes; and so he tried to find fault with the idle painter”可知,院长抱怨达芬奇画画延误了,因为他觉得画家虚度了大部分时间。故选A。2What does the underlined word “contemplation” in Paragraph 1 mean?APossibility. BIntention.CDeep thought. DGreat expectation. C。3What can we conclude from the passage?AThe painter was pleased with the Priors anger.BThe Prior was angry because he thought the painter did not work hard.CThe painter took one of the monks as a model for Christ.DThe painter took one of the monks as a model for Judas. 根据文章第二段第一句中的“This inactivity aroused the anger of the fussy Prior .” B。4Why did the Prior stop complaining?AHe did not wish to be remembered like an evil traitor after he died.BHe wanted to be painted as a tender Christ.CHe disliked to be painted in fashionable clothes.DHe was pleased to be a fashionable model. 根据文章最后两句“But he would look no further; if none came his way, he would be satisfied to take Prior as a model for Judas. This threat silenced the angry Prior, who quite naturally had no desire to pass to descendants in such a fashion.” 故选A。1inactivity n. B We all know the old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” But can we make ourselves laugh at will? According to a Czech doctor, Karel Nespor, the answer is “Yes!” In his book, TheHealingPowerofLaughter, he tells us good ways to produce laughter all day long so we can be happy and healthy. He believes that with a little training, anyone can laugh at everyday events and therefore enjoy better health and relationships. Dr Nespor says that we should start the effective“laughtertraining” first thing in the morning. As soon as we get up, we should be sure to smile at ourselves in the mirror. We may feel silly at first, but that will only make us smile more! The next step is that while we are bored or anxiously waiting for something, we should think of funny things. For example, as we waitinline for the bus, we can imagine Tom Hanks character in the movie TheTerminal and how he loses his ID papers, and has to live in an airport and entertain himself and others in very amusing ways. The third step is to laugh at difficult things that make us feel sad or even afraid. Really! When these situations and feelings come, we can laugh at our problems, and find humour in real life. No matter how unpleasant things are, try to imagine that these events are like an old friend whom you love to jokewith. This will help us learn the powerful skills of letting go of negative thoughts and replacing them with positive thoughts. And finally, as we eat our dinner at night, remember what Dr Nespor says, “Laughter need not be lonely. Smile more often at your friends and relatives. Point out funny things to each other, tell each other humorous stories, and laugh together a lot.” Repeat these four steps each day for best results! There are two points to remember to keep your funny feelings flourishing:_avoid entertainment such as horror movies, and be careful not to laugh at others. This may hurt them and you as well. Dr Nespor warns that making others unhappy may reverse (颠倒) the health benefits of laughter. But making yourself and others happy should produce longlasting healthy effects.5Which of the following best explains the saying “Laughter is the best medicine”?ALaughter is regarded as a new kind of medicine nowadays.BLaughter is the best way to stay healthy.CLaughter can cure any disease.DLaughter is more effective than any medicine. 根据第一段中的“In his book, TheHealingPowerofLaughter, he tells us good ways to produce laughter all day long so we can be happy and healthy.” B。6What is the passage mainly about?AA Czech doctors newly published book.BAn old saying.CA laughtertraining course. DEffective ways to be healthy in body and mind. 7The underlined word “flourishing” in Paragraph 5 means “_”Adeveloping BdisappearingCremaining Dencouraging答案:A词义猜测题。 A。8The writers attitude towards laughter is _.Acritical BdoubtfulCpositive Dnegative答案:C推理判断题。 1effective adj. 有效的2.negative adj. 消极的1wait in line 排队等候 2.joke with . There was a woman who went to the airport _1_ (hurry).
